Ford of Europe has dropped the first official photos of the refreshed 2011 Mondeo, along with some details on the mechanical updates. The only substantive visual change is a reshaped front fascia with a larger trapezoidal lower grille similar to the Fiesta and the upcoming 2012 Focus, as well as reworked driving lights.

Behind that new grille Ford has added the same type of active shutters the Focus is getting to restrict air-flow at higher speeds or colder temperatures, reducing turbulence and aerodynamic drag.

The rest of the engine compartment is occupied by two new powertrain options, including a more powerful 237 horsepower version of the 2.0-liter Ecoboost inline-four that debuted earlier this year. At 179 grams per kilometer of CO2 emissions, the new Ecoboost will have the same fuel consumption as the lower power unit and 20 percent less than a V6 of similar power. This more powerful unit is likely the one that we will get in the Edge and Explorer for 2011. All of the Ecoboost engines are mated up a six-speed dual-clutch Powershift gearbox similar to the unit that just debuted in the Fiesta in North America.

The second new engine is a reworked 2.2-liter diesel inline-four that now puts out 197 hp, a 12 percent bump from the previous edition. The new Mondeos will will be shown publicly at the Moscow Motor Show in August and go on sale in the fall.

I think it looks fantastic. Ford needs to bring that engine over to the US in the Fusion and Focus though. Both cars could have a lot of potential with that much turbo power.

This is indeed a sweet car...but if it came here, where will it fit in the Ford lineup over here in the States?

Under the Taurus but above the Focus or Fusion?

That 237 BHP seems pretty reasonable for a car that size, and hopefully Ford will be considering the idea to stick something like that in the Fusion or the Focus. I still wish we had the Mondeo in America, but this is the last hurrah before the car is rolled into the same design envelope as the Fusion.

The Mondeo couldn't be made to fit in the Ford U.S. lineup, as it is actually a bit smaller than the Fusion is.

The engine, however, would be quite nice. It would make a nice replacement for the older 3.0 V6, and might even convince Ford to insert the lovely Mustang V6 in the Fusion AWD.

Put that engine in the Fusion and call it Ecoboost.

The ecoboost 4 banger should be in Fusions (maybe other models too) later this year or early next year, from what I read.

EDIT: I just found more current info that says the Fusion won't get it until 2013.

It's the same size as the Fusion, to within a "meh".

In sedan form it's 0.1" longer, 2.1" wider and 2.6" taller than the Fusion. The hatch form is slight shorter (2.5") but still wider and taller. The Fusion is what the Americas get in place of the Mondeo.

-> Hmm, I see a nice internal battle within Ford's best saloons/sedans! Euro-Fords Mondeo EcoBoost? Or US-Fords Fusion Sport? I'd like to see that!

Although that wasn't the case previously. The current Mondeo is absolutely enormous which is how it manages to be roughly Fusion-sized.

I have to admit, the styling of the Mondeo is slowly growing on me, but only on higher-specced versions with big wheels. Base models look awful, wheras the base model of the previous generation still looked pretty good.

The new engine can only be a good thing though. More power, more economy. Always a good combination.

Indeed. And it's not just the base model:

I'm sure 'Zetec' used to mean sporty...

Ah, the 2.0 Turbo, a classic combo. Y'know...if they made an all-wheel-drive variation with that engine, I'd be all over it faster than one could say "Sapphire Cosworth..."

I think they would be fairly closely matched. The Mondeo is probably better, but not nearly as much as it was before the Fusion was updated.

The new Fusion is goooooood. Surprisingly fun to drive, a solid value (you can walk out of the dealer with a 2.0 SE and Sync for less than $22K, an absolute steal), and pretty efficient for its class/size. If I were in the market for a midsize sedan, this would probably get my money, hands down.

^ The USDM-version, yes. However, the Global-version? That I don't know.

The Mondeo does looks pretty nice... Tight competition with the 3-Series?? Watch out in 2012!

Even over the Mazda version?

I'll echo what has already been said: Yes.

I don't care for the new 6. Granted, I haven't driven one, but on looks alone, I'd have the Fusion. Wind it back a generation, and I'd have the 6 over the Fusion. Weird how that works out.

^ I agree, the new USDM Mazda 6 is like a Oxygen fitness model (from the last-gen) that went on a mental breakdown and got FAT.

-> On the other hand, the Global-spec Mazda 6 carries the same Oxygen fitness model that doesn't carry much weights. (lack of juicy engine choices, unlike its cousin)

BT-> How well would the Mondeo Ecoboost tallied up with the Fusion Sport?

*Power = Fusion
*Weight = Mondeo

^ I'd really want to see the battle between these two blokes. :sly:

How much does the Mondeo Ecoboost weigh? I looked on the Ford UK site and they didn't have any weights for the SCTi that I could find.
