With its new top model in the Gran Turismo model line, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is raising the bar for sporty four-door cars in the luxury class by yet another notch. The new Panamera Turbo S is a unique combination of performance and efficiency, driving dynamics and comfort. The 4.8 litre, V8 biturbo charged engine delivers 550 hp (410 kW), ten percent or 50 hp (37 kW) more than the already very powerful engine in the Panamera Turbo. By the same token, the torque also increases from 700 to 750 Nm. In the "Sport" and "Sport Plus" mode of the standard Sport Chrono Package Turbo and during kick-down in normal mode, the eight cylinder engine delivers fully 800 Nm with the so-called overboost function.

The power pack is behind the new top-of-the-range Panamera's record sprint times. Thanks to Launch Control, 100 km/h (62 mph) is reached in 3.8 seconds; the top speed is 306 km/h (191 mph). Despite the increased performance, fuel consumption remains at the moderate level of the Panamera Turbo - yet another example of "Porsche Intelligent Performance". In the NEDC the Gran Turismo covers 100 kilometres (62 miles) on 11.5 litres of fuel. Fuel consumption falls to 11.3 litres per 100 km (25 mpg imp.) when fitted with the 19 inch, all-season tyres with optimised rolling resistance developed for the Panamera by Michelin.

The increased performance compared with the Panamera Turbo can be attributed to two main enhancements: Improved turbochargers with titanium-aluminium turbine wheels and modified engine control. The use of the innovative titanium-aluminium alloy reduces the weight of the turbine and compressor wheel. This results in a lower moment of inertia and thus in improved and more agile engine responsiveness.

Even for a top luxury class model, Porsche's new top-of-the-range Panamera boasts an extraordinarily comprehensive equipment level. In keeping with the sporty concept of the high-performance Panamera, it features the most important driving dynamics control systems as standard. For example, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), an active roll stabilisation system, nips in the bud the vehicle's tendency to lean when cornering, thus enhancing agility and comfort in equal measure. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) applies a variable torque split to the rear wheels combined with an electronically controlled rear differential lock, thus ensuring superior traction and therefore greater agility in every driving situation. The steering system uses the speed-dependent Servotronic. The Sport Chrono Package Turbo, which tunes the suspension and power unit, making them even sportier by pressing the additional "Sport Plus" button, is also fitted as standard, as is the sports exhaust system for an even more emotional engine sound.

The sporty character of the new Panamera Turbo S is apparent not just in its performance but is also reflected on the exterior. The 20-inch Turbo II wheels with increased rear axle track width, side skirts from the Porsche Exclusive range and the adaptive extending four-way rear spoiler in the exterior colour ensure particularly sporty performance and look. The fusion of exclusivity and sportiness is conveyed in the interior by the bi-colour leather finish, fitted as standard. The new combination of black/cream is offered exclusively for the new Panamera Turbo S with agate grey/cream also being added as an exclusive combination from the autumn.

The Panamera Turbo S costs 167,076 euro in Germany, including VAT and country-specific equipment. Deliveries start in June 2011.

Nope, still ugly and heavy. Ferrari FF for me thank you very much.

Nope, still ugly. Maserati QP or E63AMG for me, please.

I went to Porsche event a few months ago and the dealers were chauffering us form the off site car park to the event in Panamera's. The car goes and handles amazingly well, and the interior is a thing of beauty. But it's so bloody ugly on the outside I couldn't ever see myself wanting to own one.

FF is around the same weight, isn't it?

Oh, right, ~1800kg was DRY weight.. :ouch: Still, I'd take it just because of the NA V12.. and what about price?

I actually have seen quite some of them on the road and find them to be quite an owkey looking car. When I drive past one of those, I immediately say I've never seen a luxury saloon with this kind of shape/design and it looks quite unique compared to other saloon. I'd still take something else over this...

Why are we comparing coupes to a sedan? Also, the Panamera is not particularly ugly. I don't find it to be extraordinarily attractive, but ugly is a bit over the top.

FF is a fourseater, and as such, closest thing to Panamera what Ferrari has to offer.

I rather like the way it looks. If one was decently priced pre-owned I'd be hard pressed to not get this over the equivalent Audi, BMW or Jag. The AMG Merc is first on my list but this is easily second for my super saloon needs. :D

Because you can fit two full-grown adults wearing business suits in the back of an FF, right? And if you don't think that car is ugly then you obviously haven't seen it.

I don't think the Panamera is especially good looking, but I don't think it's ugly either. The only thing I'd change is to color the side skirts and front airdam thingie black because the car looks thicker than Rihanna's hips.

You more than likely can. The 612 had surprisingly roomy rear seats & the FF is its successor.

As for the Porsche, it's not beautiful, but I wouldn't pass this up if given the chance.

Toronado
The closest thing Chevrolet makes to the Porsche Panamera is the Camaro. Should I consider them cross-shoppable?

How? The camaro's rear seats are probably cramped and the panamera has two more doors. I would simply get the panamera because I like Porsche and to stand out.

Is the only direct competitor to this the Cadillac CTS-V Wagon? I'll just say that it is, and sit in my own little world. Still, it is an impressive bit of kit in a full size sedan, and that power is going to be a lot of fun for showing off with your passengers. Still, nearly $180K for one of these seems outright ridiculous. For that kind of change, I'll pick up an overdone S600 and call it a day.

The performance figures really are biblical, yes it's heavy, pig ugly and compared to it's direct rivals, relatively cheap.

If only Porsche could redesign the whole body.....

It needs to look more traditional sedan. Take what the BMW 7-series is, nice, fine luxo-sedan that might get lost in traffic every now and again, but who cares? You'll probably be being chauffeured anyways. I'd take the Audi A8 W12 over this polarizing Porsche.

It's not ugly, and yes it actually grows on you, but it's too unconventional and un-Porsche. Like trying to fit a 911 body around a whale, all sorts of weird distortion everywhere.

Personally I think the Rapide is the ugliest pile of cow turd in the whole luxury 4 door market. The lines look totally wrong, its overpriced, its fat, bland and uninspiring like someone just added some extra welding to a DB9.

Just because its looks are based on a good looking car doesn't mean stretching it also makes its good looking. I haven't seen one on the roads yet I've seen plenty of the competitors including a few Panamera's and if that's because people rather buy something else than the Aston then I agree with them.

I would take a Quattroporte or Merc's up coming Shooting Break any day, at least they don't look like barges. As for the Panamera I have always appreciated its quirky style, its not exactly stunning but at least its interesting.

Robin.

If it looked decent, I'd love to have one. Really impressive performance.
BTW: in the UK, it will start from £122,000, which is £20,000 more than standard Turbo.

Hmmm.... Still ugly, just life the Ferrari FF.

I'll take this thanks 👍

It's beautiful, and I think this is definitely in the Panamera cross-shopping segment (unlike the FF). If you want to bash the panamera, here's the car to do it with.

^^^ Or this

But on the Panamera, its ugly as hell, but i'd hoon one in a minute.

If only Porsche could redesign the whole body.....

Or just give us a 928. That's all I want.

If we're picking super sedans, if I can't have the Quattroporte, I'd have the XJ Supersport. Big Jag looks, XF performance. Plus, wood. Lots and lots of wood.
