2014 Final Round Pad Times and Limitations

Unfortunately at this round there seems to be quite a noticeable disadvantage for controller users, as many have said in other threads (https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/2014-final-round-nissan-gt-r-nismo-gt3-spa-francorchamps.310542/page-2). We just can't, as far as I can see, take either Eau Rouge or Blanchimont flat, whereas wheel users don't seem to have much of an issue doing so. I've watched ghosts of the top pad times and haven't seen either of these corners taken flat, so I was wondering if anybody has taken either corner flat out using a DS3.

To me, GT Academy should be an opportunity for all players to see where they stand on a level playing field, There are car/track/tyre combinations that allow this to happen (such as Round 2 at Apricot Hill in the 370Z, in which the top 3 DS3 players are in 6th, 7th and 12th place currently), so it is a shame more consideration hasn't been given to these events.

I am not a believer that the greater input precision offered by a wheel makes any significant difference to lap times, but the steering limitations imposed on pad users at speed in the interest of making cars more controllable is clear here.

Anyway, enough ranting, I have compiled a list (manually, so it probably contains a few mistakes) Of the top 66 DS3 laps set so far. I intended to go up to 100, but only went up to 66 because I got bored and that's where I happened to be. :) I know it's a list of limited credibility as many wheel users would be right up this list if they decided to use a pad, but it's nice to have some idea of where you stand on a level playing field, which to my mind is what it's all about!

So, 6 pad users in the top 500, 7 within 2 seconds of the fastest time, and 31 in the top 1000! There isn't the same motivation to try to put in the best lap possible when you know that straight away you're losing a second or more because of your input device. I just hope that issues of this type don't arise in future events.

How are other DS3 users approaching this event, and what are your views on the situation? Have any of you managed to take either Eau Rouge or Blanchimont flat? If so, I'd love to see a video of it. :)

Mod note: Sorry if this is inappropriate or better suited to an existing thread; I did look and didn't see anything too similar.

Regardless of the flat out situation, i dont see how ds3 vs wheel could ever be considered an even playing field. For that matter, same goes with say a dfgt vs g27. Its not exactly an even game as the wheels and pedals are different. The only thing that is even, is we all can use which ever device we want/are able to.

Nice list btw!

I too feel that pain of watching the top10 in my region taking some serious advantage on those 2 corners flat out while i could not take those turns in a DS3 flat out even with the sensitivity up to 7.

Its a big of a competition issue on uneven playing feel, but i dont think it will ever be adressed.

Also, im using a DS3 because in my region, they dont sell steering wheels anymore...only for X-box Ones.

That's pretty awesome. According to my gorilla-math his lap looks something like:

T1: 0:37'ish
FINAL: 2:22'ish

Any thoughts?

I like that video... great to see how the game compares to reality. GT being faster than reality is something I'm sure we're all used to by now I'm sure! In a way it's nice that the DS3 provides a slightly more true-to-life experience through Eau Rouge. Having said that, Lucas did say he was "nearly flat out" through Blanchimont. I don't know about you guys but I have to lift quite a bit!

That T1 split is pretty much what we're getting in-game, suggesting that the car's performance is fairly similar in terms of straight line speed, as that's pretty much what T1 is a test of. To me it seems that the car's downforce and/or tyre grip etc are exaggerated in-game, judging by the total time, but that's just a first look assumption based solely on those splits.

It is a shame, but you take from the experience what you want. If you are chasing the top times, then you know that you must have a steering wheel to compete. I am well off the pad times in this list still, but enjoyed the 30 minutes of running completed currently and will no doubt unpack the steering wheel for a more lengthy session in the near future.

These advantages affect the real world as well. I know everytime I race my friends in a go-kart that my extra weight (the skinny little sacks!) makes a real impact on the results. I'm yet to find a centre that uses weight ballast to counter this and make the running even, but similarly I haven't actively sought after losing a bit of weight either...

So I guess having a wheel would be considered a driving aid, especially since you can't be competitive without one. Since coming over from GT5 and never needing a wheel to gold any event, I guess I will be needing a wheel for GT6. So much for the good old days.:grumpy:

P.S. All aids off except abs 1, race rig, and steering wheel.
