As Autoexpress are claiming these are exculsive images I'm assuming they're not just artists impressions...nice!

EDIT: Looks like I shouldn't have assumed these images were legit...UK plates on a left hooker should have been a give away :ouch:

It’s a BMW M car revolution! We’re kicking off our special issue with the news every fan of the performance arm will want to hear: that it’s gearing up to rival the Porsche Cayman and Audi TT RS with a new M2 coupe.

Auto Express spoke exclusively to the M Division’s new managing director, Dr Friedrich Nitschke, and he revealed the car was key to his plans. Plus, it’s only the start.

A revolutionary new M3 is also in the pipeline, and there are discussions over a Lamborghini Aventador-rivalling supercar. The ambitious plans will help BMW take the fight to the quattro GmbH performance arm which makes S and RS-badged Audis, plus the R8.

The M2 will be based on the firm’s F21 platform – also set to underpin the 2 Series, due early in 2014 – and has a front-mounted engine driving the rear wheels. One BMW insider has told us the newcomer, a direct descendent of the 1 Series Coupe, will be instantly recognisable from the entry-level car with its bold look.

Our source also explained that BMW will not copy Audi’s “sausage factory” approach to design. This means the racy new 2 Series will get unique front
and rear end styling, as our exclusive images reveal.

The new 2 badge will also help BMW manage its model range, since the 1 Series family has expanded to include hatch, coupe, cabriolet and crossover models. Plus, it will overcome the problem of using M branding in conjunction with the 1 Series nameplate.

The company is currently testing two engines. The first – a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo – offers around 350bhp and is very similar to that in the 1M Coupe (tested on Page 56). The second is an innovative tri-turbo, giving similar performance but better fuel economy. This will debut in a new X3M at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Power will be fed through BMW’s all-new DCT semi-automatic transmission, while the brakes will be taken from the current M3. To keep the newcomer’s weight to a minimum, the firm is expected to make extensive use of the advanced carbon fibre-reinforced plastics it has developed for its Project i cars.

This material, which was first adopted on the E46 M3 CSL, is stronger than steel and yet extremely light. What’s more, it is much easier to repair than carbon fibre.

Nitschke told us: “In the 1M Coupe, we have a starter car for the M Division, and we are continuing to develop this project. Such models must be sporty, and offer extraordinarily low fuel consumption. This is something we could achieve with the M2. I think the 1M Coupe proves there is room for an M2, a coupe.”

The all-new two-door is expected to arrive here in 2015 – and if demand for the 1M Coupe is anything to go by, it’s set to be a huge showroom success. BMW reports that only 30 of the 450 right-hand-drive versions of the two-door 1 Series it has built remain unsold.

I doubt it will look like that, you know how it is with concept cars.

Yeah, but with BMW, what you see in the concept is what you get.

BTW: I thought the 1M Coupe was the challenger to smaller sports cars. All though it isn't a 2-Seater Coupe like this one is.

I also found a link to the BMW M3 Concept. I think what we see with the M2 is what will be on the roads pretty soon.

The rear looks good. The front looks horrible. :yuck: Probably would make trees run away from it when you're about to have a crash with it.

That is a clear photoshop. Not sure what it has to do with this anyway?

That m2 front is hideous. Looks a bit fake as well. The rear though is nice and can see some of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept in the design.

I think what they mean is artists produced the rendering exclusively for that mag.

I promise the real thing won't be a badly cobbled together mixed of the Vision ConnectedDrive concept, M1 Hommage, or have F10 M5 alloy wheels, calipers and discs... which is what the OP pic is.

That is definitely a photoshop. Why? Because look at the flash on the kidneys. They don't go with the other lighting.

It looks like a cross between a Citroën GT, FT-86, and an Infiniti G35 with BMW badges & grill. I must say though, if this is real, I like it.

Not being an artist's rendition is clearly a lie, the nose is taken from photoshopped M1 and CS concepts pieces, the rear end is straight off the M1 concept without the funky rear windshield. The wheels are the new F10 M5's wheels, not even artistically rendered there.

No person sat at a desk and designed that concept, it was a 100% photoshop job. There is very little chance any of that styling will make it to the reveal.

Thats such an autocar artist impression image, it just doesnt flow properly (like its been shopped).

I wouldnt be suprised though if it ends up sharing similarities with the M1 anniversary Concept which was beautiful. I hate BMW so much for not putting it into production.

Fixed for accuracy.

I don't mind it. I suspect the real car will be more cohesive, but even that rendering is better than the current Z4.

The rear would look a lot better if they'd not photoshopped the UK's bloody awful yellow numberplate onto it. Really distracts the eye away from the details. Will be interesting to see how that boot is supposed to open too, which is another clue that the image is a rendering rather than a scoop.

Yeah seems a little weird to bother 'shopping UK plates onto a LHD.. Auto Express suck, and any photochops they publish normally look bloody awful when it come to BMW's.

edit: the more I look at the OP Auto Express picture.. it really is terrible, there is so much talent on the web when it comes to 'amateur' photochopping, that if a 'professional' did this and was paid for it.... it's an outrage I tells ya!

As others have said, really poor photoshop.

The grilles are pixelated, the wheels are tinted a blue that doesn't match the car, the shadow looks horrid, and the use of dodge and burn all over the fenders is obvious.

Maybe I should apply for a job as one of these artists...

That front looks so stupid...I can't believe someone would make that as a serious "artist's impression".

Man, I can't believe they paid someone to do those chops. I wouldn't have done something like that even 5 years ago, they are awful. The white one with the giant clown wheels is also a photoshop, and even poorer than the op's images.

Come on, people.

Yea I agree none of the lines flow or really connect. The front end juts out and creates a weird angle from the edge of the hood to the bottom of the bumper and the back end does the same. The thing almost looks like a trapezoid on wheels.

looks good in my opinion, but how much will make it into production?

It has that stupid front from the Vision ConnectedDrive. I knew it looked very familiar. No way will BMW ever build something that looks like that. It goes strongly against their habit of designing fairly conservative cars.

Also, before we start hearing about something like an M2, shouldn't we be hearing about a generic 2-series first? Usually the M cars come after the standard model debuts. And what would a 2-series even be? I would think that a 3-series coupe thing would be a 4-series. And the 1 series already has a coupe...

Jeez, I wonder where they got the idea to put doors on the car. Jeez, I wonder where they got those headlights from. Jeez, I wonder where they got those wheels from. Jeez, I wonder where they got those brakes from. Jeez.
