24 Hours of Nurburgring: can it be done alone and in real time?

I was getting caught up on Seasonal Events last night and, for some inexplicable reason, I was suddenly overcome by a desire to make an attempt at running the entire Nurburgring 24 hour endurance race by myself and in real time.

By real time, I mean that pausing the game would not be allowed for the entire 24 hour event. I also want to do it legit, using a comparable car to the competition, so there won't be any X2010 business here. While it would be great to actually win, this is more about the experience, so I'd much rather be in something that isn't going to just smash the competition.

I'm just wondering if anyone has attempted this and succeeded. If so, any tips? What did you do to prepare? Was it worth it, or was it such an awful and draining experience that you wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy?

I'm just shy of level 35 at the moment, so this isn't something I can even undertake straight away, since I can't even access the event yet. I figured I could work up to it by running the Nurburgring 4 hour endurance race as many times as I can possibly squeeze in over the next few weeks. Not only should this be good practice for the real deal, but it should also go a long way to getting me to level 40 and unlocking the full 24hr event.

Running the 24 hour Nurburgring by yourself and in real time exceeds what any race car driver is asked to do IRL. In the actual race the drivers take turns.

It is admirable that you want to run the event in equal autos to the competitors but this ups the stress. Your car won't be faster than the competitors and each mistake you make will drop you back, which only aggressive driving would allow you to recapture.

I am level 40 and simply refuse to start either of the 24 hour enduro races until an in race save feature is available. I ran the 9 hour Tskuba race using in race pause to take a break and it was still pretty demanding and near the end I was really concerned about a PS3 glitch or power surge wiping out what I had done.

More power to you if you accomplish this task but as I said it goes beyond what happens in real life.

In the interest of health, blod clots in your leg are a very real concern if you don't move them during that span oftime.

Yep, I totally realize that this wouldn't be a simulation of how it is done in real life (although I would love to attempt that as well, if only I had a couple of GT friends that lived nearby).

Up until last night, I had planned on taking a similar stance as you on the longer endurance races; i.e. I wasn't planning to do them until they gave us mid-race saves.

I don't really know what came over me, but I feel like I have to try it. I guess this is just about my love for the Nordschleife and wanting to test myself to see if I could actually pull it off.

I did the 24 hour endurance but had to break it down into shorter sections using the pause. My longest stint was a little under 8 hours and honestly I don't think I could have done any more in one sitting.

Good luck to you if you do try though. I would be very, very interested to read your race report.

Watching the time change from day to night to dawn was absolutely stunning. In one complete session I would imagine even more so :)

unfortunately I got a good 9 hours worth of torrential rain.....and that was pretty much all through the night making it even more difficult. It pretty much ensured I finished in 2nd place since I just couldn't compete with the AI at night and in the rain.....it is much, much, much more fun in a competative car though......I have a lot of respect for anybody who doesn't take the X2010 easy win.

Put a TV in the loo, and you'll have the realism of a bucket seat.

Hehe,
I wouldnt do it without a pause for the previous health comments. I would get 3 buddies round, a load of food and beer (coke if under 18) and have a go then. For every friend who doesnt play GT5 add 10-20pp on top of what your opposition cars are. This will make up for their lack of skill.

I did the Suzuka 1000km this Saturday just gone, only took 5hours 27mins in the 787B but that was hard enough and i took 30 minute breaks at each 30 lap pit stop, a good 3 hour break at 90 laps and then i took the last 82 laps serious with only pausing for loo breaks in pit stops, then i took a 2 day break from GT5 and the PS3 entirely.

I really can't see 24 hours straight being possible alone or even much fun after the 6 hour mark with back ache numb legs the desperate need to pee, and the fear of power cuts or glitches as Mr RReed43 pointed out.

But if you do go for it then good for you as i wouldn't even dream of it.

add 10-20pp on top of what your opposition cars are. This will make up for their lack of skill.

Great idea but my friends have so much lack of skill at GT5 id have to remove 100pp just so they could handle the car to start with :(

You can! If you want a slow suicide. LOL. But seriously, I've only done it back in GT4 days with 3 of my friends. Doing it by yourself is ridiculous.

I'd want to document it in some way, probably on video. I wouldn't record the whole thing, of course, but I was thinking I could report in maybe every two hours throughout. I think it would be interesting to see my degradation over time, even if it turns out that I can't finish it.

Is it weird that the comments saying it is ridiculous and it will kill me just make me want to try it even more? :trouble:

Exactly. I don't even have local gaming friends who are comfortable with a controller, let alone who are competent behind a wheel. Plus, you'd have to remove another 100pp to offset the beer.

I've done both 24hr races on my own, the only advice i can give is get racing asap when you wake up
It can be done!

I was thinking about doing the same. Full on 24 hours with one driver. Absolutely. 👍 But if your to do 24 hours straight I suggest using a DS3 rather then a wheel. The wheel might tire you out to quickly. I wish I could do the 24 hour races but school is starting and I won't be able to do it 24 hours straight. :(
Have fun! :)
Get a friend to post how your doing in the race like how others here on GTP chare how it's going. Or do a live video feed. That would be cool. 👍

Awesome! Yeah, at first I thought I would start on a Friday evening after dinner. Then I realized that I'd be starting a 24 hour race after having already been awake for 12 hours. Duh! :dunce: Not such a brilliant plan.

The revised plan would be to start on a Saturday morning immediately following breakfast. I've been known to game from 9am to 5am without even realizing it (I once played the entirety of the original Assassin's Creed in a single sitting), so I think making a concerted effort at 24 hours of racing should be doable.

Granted, it will be a lot tougher than relaxing on the couch with a controller, but I think I can do it.

I've done long extents of gaming to! :D
You never do realize it when time flies by. Go for it I say. Just simply do it!
What car are you planning to race?

You aren't gonna die for this. The more dangerous you can suffer is fall asleep.
I think if you really try, and you are motivated, you can made it.
Turn on your web cam!

GOOOOOO!

I had some success last night on the ring running the 908 HDi FAP Team Peugeot Total '10. I'll probably go with that as long as it is competitive. Whatever I choose, it's gotta be premium so I can use the cockpit view.

I wouldn't recommend you try this, your body would need stretching, food, and most importantly sleep. I think it would be to demanding on your body and honestly goes against the warning titles at the beginning of these games.

I don't know about most people but I'm sure it is the same. I know only 2 other people that have this game and they don't even have it hooked up to the internet. They also don't like playing GT as much as me. So buddies coming over to do this is something a lot of us don't have the luxury of experiencing.

But if you feel like you want to do it then by all means keep us posted! Good luck!👍

Yeah, but pushing myself beyond the limit is kind of the whole point. I don't intend to starve myself or anything. My wife has already agreed to let me do this and has volunteered to provide food if/when I need it, at least during the daylight hours (she's not willing to stay up all night with me, and who could blame her). I'll have a big jug of water within reach, some tylenol in case I get a headache, and I'll get up and stretch during pit stops as time permits.

Think of it as an Ironman for geeks. :)

Do the 24 hours of Le Mans first that way. Then you'll decide that you don't want to do the Nurburgring that way. You'll run through a whole case of Redbull, plus a gallon or two of coffee. Then you'll have to have someone slap you each hour after the 20th. You're right, you have time to practice... you're at least 15 million XP points away. The 24 LM race will net you about a third of what you're missing. My question is:

How are you going to eat? While you're on the Throne? The 'Ring is too windy, and I doubt you can down your meal down Dottinger.

It's probably much easier to report as you go athough then you have the problem of do you pause to do the report or still leave the game running to give your real 24 hours. :)

I was planning to use the replay of mine to do a write up for the race forum but the replay only saves the first 13 hours so I had to start making notes after that......plus you have to go back and watch a 13 hour replay to fill in the start of the race ;)

No it's not weird at all that negative comments make you want to try it even more.....it makes it your everest. Climb it just because it's there and people think you must be crazy to try it.

Oh come on man.... Racing is so much more fun with a little bit of alcohol in the body :sly:
