“Racing is life – anything that happens before or after is just waiting”

This famous quote from the Le Mans movie from 1971 is one of the best-known quotes in racing, despite it was never said by an actual racing driver. It depicts however the sensation, racing and especially endurance racing can have on them who love it. And we as sim racers are for sure amongst them. This event here is dedicated to them, who are dedicated to racing, to make them stop waiting, for these 24 hours…

Project Cars 2 offers us the possibility to drive in millions of combinations. On ovals, roads, tracks or even in the mud, driving everything from karts, road cars, race cars to fantasy future cars like the Formula X. We can have different seasons, night, day, sunshine or even snow. With all these conditions we can race any imaginable race we want to, including endurance racing. But we can only race against each other, never with each other. There are a few concepts that try to compensate for missing driver swaps, but they usually fail to transport the spirit of being in a 24h race together. Our approach tries to do exactly that. There is only one lobby, one race, no workarounds to do driver swaps except what you do in real life and no disconnects in the last hour, ruining everything you were fighting for. We provide the stewarding, the live timing, a pace/safety car, the streaming and also a few teams racing this race. But we want you, who love sim racing as much as we do, to join us in this adventure, going around a track for 24 hours straight! Knowing that we can offer this platform, we want to unite several racing leagues from all around the world in this event, each sending a team with drivers from their league to race with us at Le Mans. Driving not only for ourselves, but for our team, for the league we represent. Because as the 9 times winner of Le Mans, Tom Kristensen, once said:

“Le Mans is such a great race because you can never do anything alone. You have to work as a team member. And being a team member makes you a better person.”

Cars:

Allowed Cars:

LMP1(H):

2016 Audi R18 (Le Mans 2016)

2016 Porsche 919 Hybrid

2016 Toyota TS050 Hybrid

GTE:

2014 Aston Martin Vantage GTE

2016 BMW M6 GTLM

2016 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R

2016 Ferrari 488 GTE

2016 Ford GT LM GTE

2017 Porsche 911 RSR

Car Selection/Balance of Performance (BoP):

There is a maximum amount of 6 teams per class and 2 teams per car. The assignment of the teams into the classes will be made after the first qualifying session (see below for the schedule). The assignment to the cars inside this class will be done according to the teams choice. As schemes like “first come, first serve”, coin flips or similar are unfair to certain teams if the cars are not equal, we will ask how strong the preference for a specific car is and how much a team is giving to drive the car an use that to perform a BoP. Therefore, we ask for the 3 cars a team wants to drive and for the 2 more favourable also a time penalty they would agree on if they get this car. The time penalty is limited to 1h (=3600s) as anything above would cause troubles for the stewards.

Example for GTE:

  1. Aston 400s
  2. BMW 100s
  3. Chevrolet
In the above example and in general, the team will drive one of the 3 cars they choose for sure. If they get the Aston, they will get a maximum amount of 400s time penalty, but not more than 300s more than a BMW cockpit would have cost them (difference between 400 and 100). If there is no BMW in the final grid, it is taken as a 0s penalty cockpit.

If the team is assigned to the BMW, the maximum time penalty is 100s and the teams, getting the Aston, will serve at least 300s more time penalty.

For the Chevrolet there is no possible time penalty and they only get the Chevrolet as their third option if there are two teams each for Aston and BMW that serve more than 400 and 100s respectively. In any of the three scenarios, the team should be happy with the car they got considering their preference and the time penalties.

After all teams gave their preferences we will calculate the car assignment under the conditions described in the example with the lowest amount of BoP time penalties possible and publish them immediately for you to practice for the race.

The time penalties will be served during the race like other time penalties, see the section “Race Rules and Penalties”.

Race Procedure:

Start:

Everybody will be invited into the lobby. Only one driver per team, the driver starting the race, should enter it. The drivers should load their setup in pits and set the pit stop strategy again before going out of pits. The formation lap will happen behind the pace car. The teams will line up according to the qualifying results behind it. At the end of the formation lap the driver on pole will slow down and let the pace car into pits using the entrance at the start-finish straight. All drivers are lined up in a single file. Once the pole driver accelerates the race is started. Overtaking is prohibited until after the last chicane and the start-finish line. A few more details will be given directly before the race.

Driver Swaps:

The driver swaps are one main part of nowadays endurance racing and will also be for this race. As PC2 doesn’t provide online driver swaps, they will be done manually. Like usual, one driver will enter the pits and retire and the next driver takes over and goes out of pits.

As we allow teams to play on the same PS4 and on different ones together a few rules have to apply in order to make the driver swaps fair. For the drivers at one PS4 no real rules apply and they can change whenever they want to. For drivers on multiple PS4s we require the drivers to make a pitstop including full repair, new tires and a full tank before they retire, and the next driver takes over. For proving this, the driver must post a screenshot, including the HUD showing the fuel, tyre status and any damages, into a group chat especially for that purpose. This screenshot can be taken after the next driver is already driving.

The rules for the driver swaps in the pitlane are, that the driver retiring must finish the pitstop and overtake the driver who is taking over and waiting for that in front of the retiring driver. Once he/she has overtaken him/her, the driver who takes over can start racing. This procedure should be practiced before the race and we will gladly provide any help if needed. For a spotted violation of this rule, there are time penalties of at least 1min in order to avoid any exploits.

We reserve 3 or 4 spots (depending on the amount of teams using a single PS4) in the lobby for driver swaps. A save system would consist of time slots for several teams to use for their driver swaps. This would mean that teams can change every 30mins in a 10min time slot whenever they want to. But we will discuss that with the teams qualified for the 24h race and change it into a more flexible system if that works out. One possibility would be reserving time slots for the swaps in real time.

Finish:

After the time is down to 0s, all drivers can finish their last laps which will be counted for the standings once finished. In case the lobby does not leave enough time to finish the last lap (any bug or a damaged and slow car) the last finished lap before the lobby ended counts.

Possible Disconnects and Lobby break-downs:

As the lobby is a practice session, disconnects don’t mean game over for the disconnected driver. In case of a disconnect of a driver, any team member is allowed to join the lobby to restart driving. The unfinished lap till the disconnect is not counted in the standings.

A single exception to this rule applies to a disconnect of "hio_91" who is hosting the session and providing the live timings. If he disconnects (currently driving or not), there will be a red flag with a restarted lobby behind the safety car in the order like the standings at the moment of the red flag. It never happened in the test runs, but this scenario would be covered like that. For this reason the phone number of hio_91 will be given to some people that he remains reachable during the whole 24h.

Live Timing:

1531647855-TimetableFinished.png

The practice lobby has several advantages, but one disadvantage is the lack of timing by the game. Therefore, the timing will be done externally which proved to be very stable so far. The timings will be calculated fully automatically by UDP data provided from the game. Driver swaps and other specialties of this race are included in this timing. Penalties however are not included as they are not automatically and will be announced in the groups.

We will run the timings table as a stream for the whole race on the “Gavra Racing” youtube channel in a format like depicted in the image above.

You can either play it on any phone/tablet/pc while driving, or your team mates watch it and can notify you of the standings via a party chat like race engineers in real life racing do. The stream of the standings is about 4s delayed which should not make much of a difference.

Enforced Settings:

Communication:

The microphones have to be disabled or the drivers must join a party chat in order to avoid their voices and potential annoying sounds to be heard by other drivers during the race. The game chat will not be used for any communication during the race and lapping should be possible without speaking to each other.

The teams need however make communication during the race possible with the stewards either per messages or party chat.

For a party chat communication, we suggest you open up a private party chat and invite the admins to that. In case there is communication necessary, the steward will join the chat. This can also be your teams party chat of course.

If you want the communication handled by chat messages, this will be mainly done by the team mates not driving atm. In case of any penalty to serve, we advise you to enable text message popups for the upcoming stint, so you can follow the steward’s advice.

HUD:

For teams on multiple playstations, you need to provide “evidence” that you did your pitstop and repaired everything before the next driver takes over. For this reason, you must provide all the information to us via a screenshot with the HUD visible. The tyre conditions, fuel and damage need to be depicted like in this picture:

1531647882-HUDsettings.png

We encourage you to also have the proximity indicators on, a rear-view mirror and the gaps to drivers in front and behind. Apart from that, we suggest to use the Race Spotter (or Crew Chief App).

Of course, we gladly help you with all these settings in case you have questions or trouble.

Race Rules and Penalties:

The RULES of Gavra Racing apply also in this championship and with the sign up you accept them. The one exclusion is the part of the “Blue Flags” which are the following for the 24h race:

As a driver that is being lapped:

  • Do not slow down on the inside of a corner to make space!
  • Do not go off the racing line!
  • Do not slow down or try to extensively help the car lapping you unless it’s right next to you into a corner.
  • Hold your line!
  • Do not defend your position!
As a driver lapping another car:

  • Be patient in order to avoid accidents
  • Search yourself a save overtaking spot like a straight.
  • Make sure the lapped driver is aware of you being behind him/her.
The live timings provide you with the necessary information if the car in front/behind is a car on the same lap as you or not. Please behave accordingly.

Track Limits:

The track limits will be set to on in the settings but as this is in a practice lobby, the game won’t give any time penalties. We are however able to see if a lap got invalidated and are keeping record of that via the UDP data. The plan is to give time penalties for a given number of invalidated laps. Further details will be discussed together with all teams racing the 24h.

Big shortcuts, including cutting on the pit entrance, will follow separate time penalties given directly by the stewards.

Please keep the racing between the white lines and also respect the speed limit in pits in order to not get disqualified by the game.

Incidents and Claims:

Any incident on track can get a review by the stewards either from the stream or any other in game footage. As the views of the stewards are very limited, especially considering that this is a 24h race, any driver, spectator or commentator will be able to claim any incident in the corresponding forum section of the Gavra website for the stewards to review.

Penalties:

Like in the real WEC we will have time penalties as a penalty system. Every penalty till 2h to the race finish will be served in pits under observation of a steward. You will be informed how to serve the penalty exactly, depending on your choice of communication (party chat or messages). This will also include the BoP time penalties.

For any penalty spoken within the last 2h of racing, we will notify everyone in the race about it, but these penalties can be applied after the race is finished on the final standings.

Schedule/Qualifying:

The schedule towards the 24h race is filled with quite a few test races and qualifyings. This should ensure nobody is going into the 24h race unprepared which is doomed to fail hard. None of these sessions are mandatory, however, we might replace teams not showing up to any of them without excuse.

Final details about the first qualifying/test sessions will follow once we know how many teams/drivers signed up for the 24h race. The qualifying for the final grid will take place in the week before the race. For qualifying sessions, we take care of the time zones the drivers are living in to provide everybody decent times. Therefore, we reserve a span of 4 days for these sessions. It is however not required to show up to all of them and for each, only one team member is required. The qualifying will consist of a mixture of hot laps and constant driving. More details will be revealed after the signup.

The deadlines for the car selection gives the teams enough time of preparation in their respective cars before the race.
  • 7.8. Deadline for LMP1H Car Selection and its Announcement
  • 8.8. Deadline for GTE Car Selection and its Announcement
  • 18.8. 4h Test Race with Driver Swaps
  • 20.8. – 23.8. Qualifying for the Final Grid
  • 25. – 26. August: 24h Race

Streaming:

We plan on streaming the race in parts or completely (apart from the live timings stream which will be on the whole time). We already have 8 people wanting to contribute as directors or broadcasters for the race, but gladly accept more reliable persons to join the broadcasting team. Just talk to “soupcooler” for that. The stream and its chat will also be the meeting spot for all drivers not racing currently to talk about the race. We worked out a system with director and broadcaster that uses no driver spot in the lobby and still makes change of commentators possible.

As 24h are a long time to cover we might have some program including interviews with drivers or officials during the race.

Sign Ups:

Only teams are allowed to join the competition. We will not put together teams out of single drivers as it is very important that the teams have a good amount of responsibility for each other and good communication. A driver just put into a random team may leave any time without feeling sorry and this would be the dead for any 24h approach. However, you can always state your interest and maybe others will form a team with you.

We will allow teams of 3-5 drivers each. If a team has more than 6 drivers, they should split up into two teams with 3 each. As stated above, a team can also be formed on a single PS4 with your friends, using a single PSN account. At least 3 spots are reserved for teams formed this way as we already have some interested teams. We try to manage the number of teams to be very close to 12 teams, but in case there are more than 12 teams registered, we will perform a qualifying session. Till now 8 spots are taken by Gavra Racing drivers and friends teams. This means there are still 4 spots left for other teams which equals to a maximum amount of 20 drivers. The sooner we know about your interest, the better we can plan things and reserve a spot for your team.

Please write for any sign ups to “hio_91” or “GAVRANOVIC1991” in PSN chat or just in this thread. See you on track!!!
