Forza Horizon 4 Could Be the Best-Selling Forza Yet Says Microsoft Exec

Patiently awaiting the GTP sales specialists to chime in...

I think it will outsell FH3, very easily at that. I think it'll outsell a lot of other AAA games in other genres as well. They've effectively replaced Need For Speed as the "household" name for casual racing games.

Well there are quite a handful of sales specialists on gtp. Being one I say to Microsoft Exec. "YA DONT SAY", now make your money by doing something meaningful.

Umm ... the quote is by the GM of games marketing. He's doing exactly as he's paid to do: give even more customers a reason to buy in, while giving stakeholders a reason to grin ear to ear. Using this earned media opportunity to suggest this'll be one of the hottest racing games of all time may seem like a no-brainer, but it's the exact kind of inexpensive, persuasive rhetoric that will drive more game AND console sales. That's about as meaningful as it gets in the marketing world.

His reasoning sounds no different from some random observation on a forum.

The difference is this: forum members use their reasoning to justify why one game is, supposedly, better than another. Mr. Greenberg's rationale is to drive a bigger bottom line.

Well Greenberg is infamous in the game industry,he's known for saying lies just to promote Xbox, people usually don't take him seriously because he talks like a fanboy console warring.

I do believe Horizon 4 will be the best selling in the franchise,it's the go to franchise for open world racing games,Need for Speed is on life support,The Crew is a unfocused franchise and....that's it.

On the one hand this seems like a given. But on the other hand I'm not so sure considering how heavily FH3 was bundled.

One thing that I would say is a pretty safe bet is that it will sell very well, especially with it putting quite a bit of focus on drifting.

That and the fact it's on game pass straight up.

That does raise an interesting point though; do Game Pass uses count as a purchase?

Eh? Outside of some harsh words about Sony from a decade ago, I'm not finding much in my (admittedly brief) search. If we're expanding the definition of lies to mean "using statistics that favour someone's own argument", then Greenberg isn't alone: that's basically marketing in a nutshell. :P

FH4 will have bundles at launch too, but good call. The bundling for FH3 had the extra boost from the Hot Wheels getup nine months in — this game will need something similar to ensure it has legs. Playground has confirmed expansions are coming, so I wonder what it'll do to top Hot Wheels. That had some serious cross-generational appeal...

He's just selling his product it's fine, and saying FH4 is going to be the best selling in the franchise is one of his most reasonable comments in years, but like the saying goes "a broken clock is right twice a day"

Aaron confirmed in a tweet a while back that Game Pass downloads to do not count as sales, they count as unique players. He said that if someone purchases the game via Game Pass with the 20% discount, that counts as a purchase.

“Forza, the franchise, has every year broken previous-year records, so I expect Forza Horizon 4to be the best-selling Forza we’ve probably ever launched,”

Slight nitpick here (and I'm not using it to shut down the rest of the article, just poking fun):

While I believe the statement is correct when looking at Forza Horizon titles only, I wouldn't be surprised if this is inaccurate when considering Motorsport and Horizon as a whole, as the last few Motorsport titles have failed to reach the heights of Forza Motorsport 4 in terms of player count. I don't have accurate numbers to-hand but based on leaderboard data alone Forza Horizon 4 had about 6,000,000 players whereas Forza Motorsport 7 has significantly less.

Horizon has been on the up and up (and deservedly so), but Motorsport took a nosedive with Forza Motorsport 5 and is slowly clawing that back with successive titles. Even so, no Motorsport title has hit the dizzying heights of 9,000,000 players that Forza Horizon 3 has.

You thinking about the 7th installment mate.

I thought you were comparing it to the Forza Motorsport franchise, not Gran Turismo. :P

Funny enough, the number 4 is said to be the peak for both franchises...
