We just watched Avatar for the 2nd time. This time in 3d and I have to say it was an awesome experience. It was also the first 3d movie we have ever watched. I was just wondering if there are any really good movies to watch at home so I can use my new clear 3d glasses. Also any hints to optimize the 3d experience? Closer to the screen, further away?? Dark room??
These are the glasses we were wearing.

In addition to your question, is it actually possible to watch 3D on current TV's?

Because samsung, sony,lg etc are talking about releasing 3D tv's this year but 3D on an non-3D tv will most likely not be possible? (but thats mine logic, who knows more?)

Or do you have a 3D tv? :P

I called my local rental store and they listed a few 3d movies that can be watched at home. But I am not sure if I can use my clear 3d glasses with them.

I will put this list in the first post and try to keep it updated.

At this time it's not possible to put a 3D stream on a DVD/Bluray. The only way to do it is by rendering the footage in Anaglyph so its just a single videostream. Some movies are available in this format but you'll have to watch it using those red/blue glasses that have been around since the 70s.

The effect is basically the same but the due to the color filtering the quality and the experience are nowhere near the 3D you see in theaters these days.

I heard sony is working on implementing 3D streams in the next Bluray spec, and since they are releasing more 3DTV's, I guess in a year or so there will be a some decent 3D movies available ( and maybe games ).

As mentioned above, I believe you currently need the old red/blue glasses to get 3D at home.

don't forget about

Monster's Vs. Aliens
Polar Express
and
The Final Destination 3-D ( released on 1/5)

and most 3-D movies come with at least 2 pairs of the red/blue glasses....

I was under the impression that you had to have a DLP TV and a Blu-Ray player that is able to support the 3D feed in order to do it. Otherwise, it won't quite "work" (for the lack of a better term). I mean, it'll do 3D, but it won't be anything like it should be.

Not to worry though. After the 3D overload this year at CES, it won't be long until we see 3D everything. ESPN will be carrying the 2010 World Cup in 3D this summer, Discovery has a new 3D channel coming, and I believe there is something coming from Sony and IMAX as well.

I'm still not sold on the 3D expirience unless its something like what we saw in Avatar. Its a gimmick when it is anything else. Its part of the reason why I'm so excited that George Lucas is probably re-releasing the original Star Wars trilogy in the Avatar-like 3D.

Is it possible to make George Lucas stop raping his old franchises? He has already done enough damage to the Star Wars franchise.

As for movies available at home: I have Polar Express 3D on blu-ray. All I can say is that I am glad it has a 2D version on the disc as well.

And there is nothing more annoying to the rest of your household than watching a 3D movie when they aren't if you have a small home.

In defense of Lucas, as he has let some of the IP out of his control, its gotten pretty good. Its easy to say that The Force Unleashed was better than any of the prequel films, and hand-on-heart, Star Wars Clone Wars on Cartoon Network is a breath of fresh air when they stay clear of the comedic nonsense. All of that combined makes me very excited for the live-action show late this year or early next, and certainly, The Force Unleashed 2.

As for the original trilogy going back to theaters, at least to me, regardless of the inclusion of 3D, I'll pay to go and see them again. There is just something about the big screen, and THX sound that can't be re-created at home. It would be nice to see it this year for the 30th anniversary of Empire, but I don't know if they're sticking with it or not.

Yeah, and all the side-story books are awesome too. But saying stuff Lucas isn't hands on with is good is not a defense of Lucas. It just says that when Lucas isn't raping the franchise it is good, and I believe that accentuates my point.

Let's be honest with ourselves here...The Original Trilogy means Special raped Edition.

And this might just be a case of me having watched too much Farscape recently, but if they want it to look decent they better redo the CGI to modern standards, because the Muppets looked better.
