On the site it is broken up / a / b / g / etc
Each is a separate section for a different set of topics. /b/ is the most infamous, while there are numerous other sections from everything for photography to cars, video games to books, and so on.
However, /b/ is the most busy, the most popular, and the most active elsewhere on the internet.
Honestly, advertising you go to 4chan is more or less begging for attention, and isn't really cool. There is a reason the whole place is completely anonymous if you want.

I don't get why people hate it so much. It's really not that different from many other forums I go to (except there is some porn and an overuse of racist terms, neither of which I mind).

I beg to differ with MeechShrykull. While I don't care about the overuse of racist terms, I do care about the amount of porn in the site. It's absolutely annoying, and along with other things, make the site impossible to browse when my parents are around.

They are basically focused on different specific things, some are a general discussion kinda deal (and within the site itself there is division of pages for certain topic to be discussed) where is others focus on one theme that largely is focused on one thing. So basically its like us, to compare 1 chan could be for general discussion about racing video games. Another chan will be focused on GT, and another on FM.
