I'm fast approaching my 16th birthday and as a present I'm getting a 50cc bike, I've been searching around and I've spotted a few bikes such as the Aprillia Rs50, Derbi GPR50 and Rieju rs3 50. I just wondered if anyone has had any experience with these bikes? Also, I'm looking at starting from scratch on the clothing side so if anyone could give me some pointers that'd be greatly appreciated.

Hi, i've no experience of those bikes you have spotted. As i rode a 50cc Italjet Dragster scooter when i was 16.But i'd go for the Aprilia personally, as they have more race experiance than the other two companies.Meaning all the design of the race bikes would have been inbuilt into the road bikes. As regards the clothing buy the best you can get that will hopefully be a bargain. What sort of clothing are you thinking ?.2 piece leathers, full race leathers, jacket, trousers and boots etc or casual jacket with padding and jeans.Always buy a new helmet and one that would be approved for racing.Incase you didn't know helmets go through thorough tests, so you want the best, strongest helmet ( they are not that expensive ).Ask the shopkeeper about the labels on the back of the helmets to get the best one.Safe riding mate.

Nath.

P.s if the bike only does 30mph, please take the restrictor out as this will give it more power and a higher top speed.

I heard there is a law that limits you guys to displacement but 50cc is like what a 5 year old starts on over here in the states. Interesting.

The 50cc bikes over there are very different.
Back in the 60s the 50cc bikes could do over 120mph.

That's rather interesting. Never heard of that before.

They used to race 50s and 80s in grand prixs years ago.

Such narrow power bands that they sometimes had more than a dozen gears.

Interesting bikes there... though 50cc is a bit weedy, even by typically low Asian scooter standards... on the bright side, you'll be revving the nuts off of it going everywhere. :D

Comparing a factory 50cc twin 4stroke GP bike to a modern mass produced 50cc single 2 stroke learner bike... who in their right mind would do this?

Are you really that thick? He was proving a point to me.

That was literally the biggest facepalm I've given myself on the these boards in months.

It is unfortunate about having to get a 50cc in the UK, the whole bike license process it ridiculous over here. 50cc at 16, 125cc at 17, A2 license class restricting to 33bhp until 21 or for 2 years, then you have to take an A1 test to ride unrestricted. Cost is a big issue, can cost around £400 for someone like me, (25, going for full A1 license on direct access) which is absurd.

As for your choices if you have not yet picked @SniperRed3 I have experience of Rieju, Spanish brand, tend to be pretty fast in direct comparisons and imo probably the best looking of your options.

The idea for licensing over here isn't bad, it's just the way it is practised. I wouldn't feel safe knowing that a 16 year old could go out and buy a GSXR 600 and ride it on the road. However doesn't this contrast with car licenses? Why can a 17 year old drive a 6 litre supercar (if they can afford insurance)?

Anyway, the bike. I'd stick with a known brand, staying away from people like SYN because you really don't know how good the bike is. Considering that Aprillia and Derbi are the same company, there isn't much to choose between them, but I'd stick with one of these for a sports bike. If a tourer or grass tracker are options look at the Japanese brands.

Gear. Don't buy cheap! You're gonna want the full gear and yes it will be expensive, but it's expensive for a reason. Also it needs to fit. There is no point shelling out £300 on an Arai helmet that doesn't fit, because it really won't protect you. Go to a specialist shop, and one you can trust to get suited up.

Try to find an old Yamaha FS1E.

50cc
60mph
Classic bike insurance.
Capable of 90mph + if tuned properly.
They're expensive, and OLD.
but they're much much faster than anything modern, and a lot easier to fix.....

Jeez I'm showing my age.....

:irked:👍

I would suggest finding something relatively cheap and then use the rest of the money next year and get a YZFR125 or CBR125R, something along those lines.

Proving what point?

The discussion is about street bikes.

He compared 50 year old multi cylinder 4 stroke GP bikes to modern 2 stroke singles. There is no comparison and there are no 120 mph 50cc street bikes.

None. Zero. Even outside of North America. And having grown up motorcycling outside of North America I do know what I talking about.
