"And came home and slapped that check on the table. And I go, 'Dad, I won $4,000 playing a video game. What’s this world coming to?' " says Wendel, adding, "it was so insane."

Nice little article. He's a funny bloke that Wendel, but i bet i could kick his ass at Goldeneye :sly:

Cosmic
I bet he sucks at CoD2.

And I bet no one cares.

By the way, the idea that ANYONE is getting paid to be good at a video game is quite possibly the lamest idea ever. Try actually working for money:tdown:

Hey, I'm not against him making the money; it's the companies willing to pay gamers to play games that is quite a mystery to me.

I can't imagine what kind of "return on the investment" they would get, other than hitching a star's name to their latest product.

That is exactly what the return is. But video game competitions aren't very popular, so the companies use the payouts to provide incentive for more people to compete, thus making the competitions popular and the companies filthy rich.

Or at least that is how it is supposed to work.:)

And the problem is what exactly? Free enterprise? More R&D spend on new technologies for better games? Healthy competition? Seems that it's all good to me.

So otherwise there's an entry fee? Now it makes more sence. How philanthropic of these companies...Otherwise, you'd have to be dangerously stupid to buy a game solely because someone else was good at it.

So, do sane people watch other people play video games for more than 5 minutes, or did the world go nuts while I was at work today?

If so, Fatal1ty's a freakin' genius (to Young_Warrior, that is).

Yeah... it sounds like he's on par with William Hung. WTF... :odd:

Video games are quite popular, and just because you're not interested or don't know about it doesn't make them any less popular (NismoSkyline). The gaming community tunes in to all the major competitions, for example CPL.

It's like a tennis tournament. Why would companies pay stars? To endorse their products. People see the gamers using certain brands and winning games it gives the brand a good image.

Fatal1ty is an awesome player, even though I haven't watched any of his demos I've heard some reports from his games. Personally I sometimes catch the CPL CS finals. :)

EDIT: Well why shouldn't he be paid? It's like saying why should sports stars be paid. They're not really working, they're playing a game! He's providing entertainment for others.

2nd EDIT: MachOne he doesn't play CS...he plays Quake 3 AFAIK.

I agree with Dodge. And I didn't know if he played CS or not, I just found this on CSN and posted it.

Anyways, quit arguing. Jealous, are we?

I only knew of the guy because of Unreal Championship. He was #1 in the world at that game when I heard about him.

That LilPoison kid is freaking little. Dang. If a 7 year old kid was beating me at a game I'd throw down the controller and beat him up.

DODGE the VIPER
Aren't you like 7 anyway?
 Lmao!
Well it seems a little nerdy, and even nerdier when you talk about your skills as a gamer(although the money is tempting and winning money for playing a game is awesome.)...I wonder what his social life is like...I should buy whatever game he's playing and tell him he sucks. If his response is: "You suck" All you ever have to ask a person like him is: "Ever kissed a girl?" "No?" "Then you suck." Win by reality default...:sly:

Did you somehow miss my post a week ago with the gigantic type? He may be 12 or whatever, but you're acting like you're 5.

Knock it off. Permanently. Put him on your ignore list if you want, but give it a friggin' rest already. There are as-yet-undiscovered tribes in the jungle of Borneo that are tired of watching you imbeciles bicker.

There were 2 men on that 60 Minutes ahow that ran an league called MLG which I think did Gran Turismo 3 competitions a while back. Is that right?? And are they still doing GT competitions???

Whats wrong with getting money from video games?

Id glady enter any GT4 competition within reach of me and be quite confident to gain some cash. In fact id love to race in any "Racing game" championship/competition.

Getting money for playing video games is no different then getting money for riding motorbikes, skateboards, bmx, test driving cars! and even playing games like chess, cricket, online poker etc etc.
