Just curious how you guys run your setups... I have a 20x30 room with a 700 watt Onkyo reciever, and 7 decent speakers. One step down from a THX certified unit. It seems to sound best in a Dolby D Ex.. but then again, I haven't tried them all out ... maybe a direct stream and a different setting ... ( Large / small theater ) would make a difference?

Anyone have a good explination of that large / small theater? Never did like their's...

Whoa....can't answer your question...but that must've felt like a cinema with HDMI sound. Better Doppler effect than my 21'' little LCD TV produces, that must be.

Oh yea, when the neighbors arent home.. ( I live in an apartment ) You can hear the other cars sneaking up on you from the sides.. :) I will never go back to anything less than 52" of plasma and 7.1 sound.. :)

I have a small space, but with a cheap defective 5.1 "Panasonic" fake home theater with blown receiver, feeding only 3.1, yeah don't ask. My question to audiophiles, have any of you tried or recommend using a "Soundbar" speaker with PS3 / GT5?

I envy your 7.1 system enjoyments ;p

p.s that panasonic is going to be donated to my local Village value mart.

I'm also using a Onkyo 7.1. I have mine set to small theatre. Can't complain how it sounds. I love this system

I know when I pick large, I have to crank the volume a lot, but then I always end up adjusting the menu and music levels... its like they dont get effected in the same way or something...

LoL It must do pretty well.. all I hear is.. "will you turn that crap down.." all the time from my woman.. lol I think I'm going to fill up my spare gas tank with race fuel and set it here in the living room.. make it a little bit more authentic in here... maybe pave the living room ... lol

I run Cerwin Vega CLS-215's 7 speaker system with a 63" Plasma in a 18x23 room. I found that even with "larger rooms" you generally need to set it in small setting and then calibrate your system to your specific room.

Here's a site I've used many in the past...maybe you'll find your answer herehttp://www.audioholics.com/

Yeah, do that, mate. Just for the feel of it. What better could a man have than driving around while having that sweety smell of race fuel all around :D

5.1 system here thats THX certified 2 seperate 200 watt active subs as well 42 inch sony bravia tv absolutely awsome if turned up, wifes starts moaning though.

I have a Sony amp and Jamo 5.1 setup and LOVE it. Yours sounds way cool too. The sound is AMAZING. But like many I can only use it during the day time as I like it loud and my windows to shake with the vibes.

One thing for others to consider is a true suround sound wireless headphone system. I have one of those too but I think mine is not so good even though it cost a lot.

Yamaha receiver and Polks all around for my 7.1. I let the receiver just run the sound straight through as the PS3 outputs it.

See I cant roll like that.. Im an electrician by trade... all those wires need to go into the wall... Check out the "audio peirs" I hand made to match my end tables.. :)

I made them with that center strip so I could use some "sticky back" zip tie holders to hold all the wire behind there out of sight, then routed the speaker wire out to a 6 port "keystone" jack.

And this is how you are supposed to route your cable... "audio closet" not required...

I do side work if you want those wires in the wall.. :)

Sounds awesome, but where do you live that an apartment has a single room that is 20'x30', that's more than half the size of my entire house!

LoL... Fort Wayne Indiana.. If I reallly sit and look at it, without running for a tape, its closer to about 18 x 24 or 25.... more rectangular than square... :)

Ok.. maybe I should have clarified this as well....

I have the 1 Onkyo that was made with an HDMI pass thru, instead of a normal one. On 1080 P games, it creates snow or noise and there is nothing I can do about it. If I run an HDMI to the TV, and run an optical cable, the TV trys to compress it and I avoid that... so I run an optical cable directly from the PS3 and have it setup that way...

Should I chose the 'direct'? Or should I let it output it as a 2 channell source and use the Onkyo process it and split it up... ?

The easiest answer would be to buy a new receiver that's capable of handling lossless 7.1 audio, but 5.1 DD is likely going to sound better than stereo matrixed out. Changing the room environment to "Home Theater" should help as well; it's a confusingly named dynamic compression which you should only have on when you're trying not to have the loudest sound effects (or if you get too much popping and crackling 'cause your speakers aren't good enough :) ).

I have a 61" JVC HDTV, 5 mid-size Paradigm speakers, and a SVS Subwoofer (2- 12" speakers that shake the house) in a 15 x 20 room. Onkyo a/v receiver. My DFGT wheel is mounted on a custom stand. I use the "small room" setting. The "large room" setting spreads the sound out too much.

Its great hearing cars all around you, and the shadow problem doesn't bother me. The Nurb is almost a religious experience!

If you are running a optical out you are only getting 5.1 sound. You will only get true 7.1 through the HDMI. And when you do run HDMI you're only selectable Listening Modes are Direct/Multichannel.

Running a 5.1 Sony receiver through Wharfdale Diamond Series and 12" powered sub. I have a 50" Samsung LED DLP 1080p....looks and sounds great.

If that Onkyo reciever is fairly new, then it has audyssey function, theres alot of info on that on AVSforum.com.

Set your gran turismo settings to Large theater. Use Multichanel as input option. Dolby Digital EX is a outmixing format that you use if your sorce material has less chanels than your speakeramount.

Most importaint is your speakerplacment. go to dolby.com to get more info on that. And then it comes to your crossovers, general rule of thump, never below 80Hz, even if audyssey wants to. And LPF to LFE should always be 120Hz no mater what. Send me a pm if you need any spesific help, i have lots of links and im a frequent avforum user=)
