It appears that there is a distinct possibility of me *winning* a TV which is a Sharp Aquos LCD (26" or 28" i can't remember). I am aware that the TV will support 1366x768 Progressive Scan (although not 1080i, its a bit small for that) and has at least a component input.
I have read a little into the matter of setting the PS2 up for HD, but have only found stories of people using 1080i. A few people mention 720p but the vertical resolution of this TV is 768 pixels not 720, so needless to say I'm a little confused.
Firstly, how much better does GT4 look in HD? I'm aware that you can get far beter pictures in 480i than GT4 can make (at least of the background) so I'm a little wary of the benefits of HD, but if it really does make a difference (especially using Yr/Yg/Yb cables) then i'll gladly do it.

Secondly, how would I go about setting this up every time in the console menu?

Thirdly, I've heard of afew issues with menus in GT4 being 480i and mode-switching causing dodgy pictures. Are many TVs prone to this, and if so, what can be done?

And finally, what is Vision GT/Gran TUrismo 5 doing in the HD department?

In my NTSC version, there's no 720p, only 480p and 1080i, but I can't speak for PAL people.

Well, in 1080i, it's a lot better. There's better, more realistic contrast, everything's more detailed. But you can only use 1080i (or 480p) in the races themselves. Not in the menus and such.

If you set the picture to Yr/Yg/Yb in the actual console menu (where you set the date and time), then it will remember that. If you're talking about the game itself, you go in the options menu and switch the mode to 480p or 1080i. But you have to do that everytime you start up GT4.

I haven't experienced this at all.

It hasn't been confirmed yet, but GT5 will probably offer full HD again.

As far as I'm aware, TV's will downscale 1080i to 768 if they support the second but not the first. It sounds like it'll work well. Thanks for the help.

A few things to point out if you don't know already.
The UK PAL version of GT4 does not have 480p or 1080i options only NTSC versions do.

I have a US PS2 and a US copy of GT4 and in 1080i it looks brilliant, better than any other racing game on the PS2. It is a significantly better PQ than 480i.
Now, there are a few different Sharp Aquos LCD tv's around. Some do 1080i some don't. As said it'll probably downscale a 1080i signal but I have no ides if that's true as I have a tv that displays 1080i.
At worst you'd have to play in 480p but it is still a significantly better picture than 480i and almost as good as 1080i though that depends on your tv.

Obviously if this LCD is a prize than it saves you a few quid. But you can buy a 28" CRT HDTV (with 1080i) from JVC for around £450.

As for GT5, there will definately be 720p and 1080i options and possibly 1080p, but considering 1080p tv's are rare and expensive it may not include it.

1080p sets are not expensive and not rare.

ive been eyeing the a 37inch lcd by westinghouse that has a native resolution of real 1080p and is only 4 1/2 inches deep.

downscale means that the tv will take the 1080i signal and make it look purdy on 720p.

I got the Panasonic 34wx15 and there is a switch from 480 to 1080 from menu to in-game. But it doesn't affect the image. There is a switch from both modes which is displayed as a blank image. Nothing else.

So on that issue, it doesn't make much difference. There has been said that the switch can 'hurt' some tvs, but i have no idea.
