Customers who visit Saratoga Springs' new McDonald's could get a "super-sized" shock when they set foot inside the new coffee shop-like restaurant.

And when it comes time to throw the trash away, look out.

A motion-detecting, automatic-opening garbage receptacle and a robotic voice saying "thank you" and "please wait" might make you wonder where you are.

The three-week-old restaurant in Saratoga Springs is the first of its kind in Utah, but as a prototype of a McDonald's image revolution that will soon be sweeping the world, the atmosphere could soon become familiar.
Looking at those pictures, it's really hard to believe that's a McDonalds! Good example of what flexibility can do for a company...

Looks like a decent quiet coffeehouse. I wouldn't mind eating there (I hate eating at typical fast food places. It's drive through or nothing)

The only thing I can see as a downside is the food still sucks.

We actually have one that is fairly similar in idea to that one around here. The main differences I see are lack of fireplace and and comfortable chairs.

^

Yeah the restaurant looks good and all, in fact, they just remodeled a couple of McDonald's here in the downtown area, BUT!....the food is still garbage. period.

There's a McDonald's near here that was recently renovated that looks similar to that. Nice stone floors, fireplace, and the kids jungle-gym was replaced with a few large chairs. I think they may have done it at this location because they share a parking lot with a large McNally Robinson store and a Tim Horton's. To me it looks like they're targetting individuals or couples with no children and/or college students looking for a relaxed atmosphere to study instead of the typical soccermom (or hockeymom here) with a Caravan full of stinky squabbling kids.

I wonder what will happen to the arcade mcDonalds in Orlando...

You mean no more playground at McDonalds?!?! So from now on my cousins will only be smelling like their own urine from now on?! SWEEEEEEEET!

Theres one similar to that around here and Ive been to it. One side of the store seems to be the fast food side while the other side is the coffee shop decor like the one shown in the pics. Only difference is that the one here does not have the robotic garbage bin

My local Mickey D's already look nicer than that. It renovated, I think, a couple of years ago.

Edit:
As 3WD mentioned, food is still crappy. I almost never eat there, but when I do, there is that twilight zone feeling, eating such a bad food in such a nice place.

Exactly, that's why I think they are wasting all that money in renovating the damn place if the food is still the same. I mean, yeah, people will check the new restaurant and all, maybe once or twice, but the excitement will go away as soon as they find that the food, is the reason why they never went there.

I was thinking the same thing... I've been there before, it was pretty cool...

Aren't the McDonalds' in Europe a bit crazy like this one too? I seem to remember seeing it on the Travel Channel or something...

^ That one is in Norway, and I think that was the one with the crazy Greek-inspired designs inside.

Actually, all of the American "pass" food was quite good in Europe while I was there. Pizza hut was a sit-down restaurant/pizza buffet and was awesome. McDonalds was also pretty good. They also had the greek-style thing.

The garbage idea is interesting. However, nothing seems to have changed in McDonald's when you look at the first picture...

Well, the new McD's doesn't have a fireplace, but it does have dark blue leather seats that put Cadillac to shame. And they're still in good shape, a year later.

Other interesting McDonalds I found on the net.

Seattle will probably be among the last cities to get those. Too much competition. Most street corners have a starbucks, which is an atmosphere I would much prefer, and the food is better. The corners that don't have a starbucks have either Tully's or some other coffee house. All of them have a nicer inside than those new McDizzle's. It will feel odd walking into one while travelling. I might have to go back outside just to make sure I am in a McDo's.

I think just about all McDonalds down here have had that coffee shop style in every resteraunt with McCafé for a while now. Its pretty nice, but the tables tend to be too low. No talking bins or fire places though. :(
