A few DFGT questions.

Hello,

I have been playing GT5 with the Sixaxis controller since the game came out, and after going online and consistently being 5-6 seconds slower than other drivers that are using wheels, I have decided to take the plunge and buy a wheel.

I keep hearing that the DFGT is the best 'bang for buck' wheel. However, I have a few questions:

1. Would the performance of drivers using the DFGT be comparable to the ones using more expensive wheels such as the G25, G27, Fanatecs, Thrustmaster? If I am still going to be slower than an equally skilled driving just because my wheel isnt as good as his/hers, then I'd rather just keep my money and use the controller because being 3-4 seconds slower than someone isnt much better than being 5-6 seconds slower.

2. What exactly is the deadzone problem? DFGT users keep complaining about this. Should I, forgive the pun, steer away from this wheel because of this dead zone thing?

3. Would you recommend me getting the DFGT now? Or wait a couple of months and get a G27/Fanatec? (I would never consider the Thrustmaster due to its price....cant justify spending that much on a video game accesory)

Thanks in advance.

I'm new too...I got th DFGT for Xmas. Drove it loved it...after reading I didn't think I had enough and wanted a 6spd.

1) I am faster with the DFGT then the fanatic Carrera setup (using paddles and same cars/tracks - the paddles are nicer on the fanatec)
2) I see no real dead zone issue, I enjoy the way the wheel feels, so much so I sold the Carrera (it was awesome I just like the rougher twitch feel of the DFGT - I have a g27 coming wens :)
3) I'll let you know after I test wens :) I hope I don't prefer the DFGT over the g27...that would stink.

Thanks for your reply.

What do you mean you wanted a six speed? Can the DFGT not handle cars with more than 5 gears?

He means that the DFGT Doesn't have an actual gear shifter, just paddles and a sequential shifter. One thing you want to know about it is that the pedals have far less resistance compared to a real brake pedal (a 18" Bungee cord wrapped around the brake pedal fixes it), and the fact that sometimes to brake tends to stick, requiring you to replug the cable for the pedals. I recommend the DFGT, as if the prices of the fanatec and g27 fall, so will the price of the DFGT. As for Deadzone, it's that if you're driving something like a X2010 at a fast speed in a straight, the wheel tends to 'wobble' from side to side about 10 degrees in each direction, It just requires you to have to hold down the wheel tightly though.

In terms of performance the difference between the DFGT and higher priced wheels are quite small and you'll not notice any difference in your lap times. However, the vast majority of tracks, and cars, in GT5 mean that for the most part you'll keep your hands on the wheel at the 9 and 3'o'clock positions. This is fine for the DFGT.

On tighter hairpins you'll need to turn the wheel, in some cases, through 180 degrees. If the car has a very close gear ratio you may find yourself missing a gear change as you accelerate out of the turn. This can cause a loss of one or two seconds although it's only happened to me twice to date.

As mentioned above, when cars are moving along a straight section of track the wheel has a tendancy to move from side to side. Normally you'd expect the wheel to stay still. The answer is "in a car moving at that speed you should not be taking your hands off the wheel in the first place". Hold the wheel, it's a non-issue.

If you don't know the answer to this question already then you should buy the DFGT. The G27 and Fanatecs are wheels for people that understand the differences that make them worth the extra money and beginners would be well advised to go with something cheaper.

For me it was a no brainer since I've got a house full of accessories for various games which I've used a handful of times. Most recently £150 spent on Guitar Hero World Tour which I played for about 6 hours!

Do you want a 6 speed shifter or are you going to use paddles?
Do you intend to play games on the X-Box 360?
Do you intend to play other PS3 games where a clutch is required ( or even works correctly ).

Only you can know the answers to these questions.

I'm also relatively new to steering wheels in video games. The DFGT was my first wheel when I bought GT5, it was the best video game accessory I ever had.

I guess the only difference you will find at the beginning is the time it takes you to get used to playing the game with a wheel. The transition between a controller into a steering wheel can be a big gap. You're times would suffer greatly at the start online, but when you get to learn how to play the game with the wheel, you'll get to see a better improvement.

G25, G27 or the other Fanatec wheels offers a great racing simulation experience but the DFGT can do all that for a more affordable price.

You're better off investing on a DFGT to start with if you really like to see whether playing a wheel is better than a controller.

Just to finish, I guess performance against other wheel users will depend greatly on the "users" themselves and how they handle they're wheel driving.

2. What exactly is the deadzone problem? DFGT users keep complaining about this. Should I, forgive the pun, steer away from this wheel because of this dead zone thing?

Honestly, I dont see the problem about the dead zone. If you move the wheel within the dead zone, for me your car in game still moves.

Also, other users has complained about the wheel shakes from side-to-side on a straight line. All I could say is just hold the wheel with a firm grip. I imagining no racers would ever take they're hands off a steering wheel while racing, so keep yours on the wheel too. As mentioned above, its not an issue, it comes down to the user just complaining or it is really a faulty wheel (unlucky)

3. Would you recommend me getting the DFGT now? Or wait a couple of months and get a G27/Fanatec? (I would never consider the Thrustmaster due to its price....cant justify spending that much on a video game accesory)

If you're looking to see if a steering wheel is what you are looking for, then the DFGT is a good way to start without spending so much on the G27. Once you, tried it on, you can decide whether you will save enough to invest into a more expensive wheel.

I highly recommend starting with the DFGT. I mean, its the official wheel for the game before the overpriced thrustmaster.

Thanks a lot guys. I appreciate it. I think I am sold on the DFGT. I have a 20% off code from the Logitech website. The DFGT is out of stock right now, but I am going to order it anyway. However, it doesnt seem to show an option for shipping to Canada. Anyone got a wheel shipped to Canada from the Logitech website before? And if so, how much was it for shipping. I can get the wheel from the website for $120 + shipping (however much that is), but there is a guy here in town selling the DFGT for $130.

Then go buy it from the guy in town. You'll get it at once, and my guess is more than $10 for shipping.

I have a DFGT and G25 and find that the steering wheel from the DFGT is very comparable to the steering wheel of the G25. The only main difference is the pedal set. The DFGT pedals are quite soft and harder to control throttle/brake input as suppose to the G25 where the additional resistance allows for a more controlled throttle/brake input. But you could do the bungie cord mod on the DFGT pedals to add resistance, I'm sure you could google/youtube that. The DFGT is good buy at its price point though.
