Hello.

I'm currently saving for a PS3. The thing is I have ages to go 'till I have the money to buy new. Then it hit me. Is it really necessary to buy brand new? Over here, to buy the new slimline PS3 320gb with BF3 and Uncharted 3 with one controller is $570 NZD. On New Zealand's equivalent to eBay, you can get a year old PS3 with five games (GT5 included :D), 3 Blu-ray DVDs with all of the cords (I don't know what cords come with a PS3) for $450.

Do I really need a brandnew slimline PS3, as wouldn't the warranty be a bit redundant if this model PS3 [Slimline] basically was the one that irons out all of the problems with the older phatty?

Also, that brings me to my next question.

What size PS3 would be best? Is it really necessary to get a 320gb PS3, or would a 250gb suffice?

Thanks,

SVX.

When buying used you always run the risk of problems, but you do save cash. I don't buy anything used that has moving parts without a warrenty, unless I can fix the item if it breaks.

As far as the 250 gig, I had a 60 gig and never did fill it up, and had over 40 music cds saved to it. I really see no point in a huge HDD unless you plan to buy lots of games from the PSN store.

Hi bevo, thank you for the reply.

Do you have the Slimline or a phatty model?

What's a long time until you have the money? At this point you could continue saving for next holiday season when xbox 720 is rumored to release and within the same period ps4 as they said they don't want to be as far behind the new xbox as they were with the 360/ps3. Just a thought.

Why are they so expensive in New Zealand? What about a 160 gig new one? That should do you.

Second hand is cheaper, but if there is an issue, can you get your money back? My brother bought a new 320gig and the Blu Ray died after 3 weeks. I have a 250gig and have had no trouble for nearly 2 years.

Hard drive size matters very little... If you REALLY think you're gonna fill it, buy the smallest HD, and then go buy a 1 Terabyte Hard drive from your local electronics store.

"Save loads of money, and save loads of stuff"

^Pretty bored
But really, It's cheaper to just go buy a bigger hard drive.

I don't think you can get your money back yet.

Single. With GT5.

That's what I want to do, but wouldn't that just void the warranty?

Get a bigger hard drive. GT5 alone will take up 10GB...

I think that's my plan.

1. Get 160GB PS3.

2. Play until empty.

3. Buy broken PS3 with bigger harddrive/buy a brand new harddrive.

4.???

5. Profit.

The cheapest fat one he can find would probably be a CECHG model (the early 40GB one), and those things are like timebombs.

He should either go for a launch model or a used Slim.

I think you should definitely aim to get a slim if your going the used route because the fatty's are disappointingly unreliable.

My 160gb fatty's getting louder now, and I think that had to do with it playing games for too long. Now it's always louder even on start-up, so go for a slim.

Also, I was always under the impression you owned a ps3, SVX. I've been deceived this whole time!

Get the 160GB or 320GB slim PS3, they will have the 40nm RSX so should be more reliable and more quiet as well as saving you a little bit on electricity and heat. You will need an external hard drive that is large enough to backup your PS3 data if you plan on upgrading your HDD later on. If you plan on saving for new then, E3 next year we might get a super slim PS3.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Would 160GB be fine? As games aren't that big. Is it worth having a warranty for one, though?

If you don't plan on using it as a media hub (and let's face it, the PS3 isn't that good of one these days), 160GB is perfectly fine. The average game install tends to be 2-4GB, for example.

I will most likely just be using it for games and PSN stuff, but probably no movies or anything as I'd normally just watch them in the lounge. Another thing. Are PS3s Blu-Ray only or can you watch normal formatting?

I'll re phase my question.

Can PS3s play non Blu-Ray DVDs?

Sorry for the confusion.

Also, I think you guys have persuaded me to buy a 160GB PS3. Thanks a lot for the help!

But it's the other question that I am still having problems finding out. Second hand or brand new?

It's always better to go for brand new one's. Cause if you plan on spending, might as well spend for something worth while right. second hand never did catch my attention, no matter how cheap.

Yeah, I'm most probably going to get a new one. I'm thinking of getting a PS3 from Harvey Normans and do a monthly payment with deposit of about $100- $150 as they have 15 months interest free.
