A Lack of Intelligent Conversation

Since I am no longer really into GT3, I only come to GTP for the community, mainly The Rumble Strip. However, recently, I have noticed a huge lack of intelligent discussion or conversation.

The only threads that pop up are "I'm Bored", or "Underwear", or the like. What happened to philosophy, politics, etc.?

I think there is too much sub-categorizing. You can't talk about music, movies, or comedy any more in The Rumble Strip b/c there are other subforums for them. What, then, is there to talk about in TRS? Everything has its own category. I suggest contraction (as in the opposite of expansion).

Perhaps this should go in Suggestions and Feedback, but more people will read it here. Peace.

ok. politics. liberals think they are always right and are snooty. conservatives think the bible knows all and think the world is awash in sin

those are generalizations.

i lean conservative, moderately. liberals are scary.

You want a lack of intellegent convos, read that really big thread. LoL

Geez psonefreak, maybe that "really big thread" isn't meant for intellectual brawling...

I think a lot of people are a bit wary of starting off something controversial because there seems to have been a bit of brawling on the boards recently, and there's a lot of people here who are quite quick to judge when perhaps they would do better to sit back a bit. And then there's others who don't want to venture an opinion because it's too much hassle to stick their head above the parapet of silence just to get it shot off.

Perhaps things will settle down again, but in the meantime, there are some quite good conversations going on in some of the sub-forums.

yup, I sure am (read my username)

NEway, upon Stealth's request, i'll go start up a topic... I'm not yet at the level to talk about politics though, so I won't start up a topic about that.

This is true, however, I was surprised how many (and which individuals) wandered into this thread and seemed to have read the majority of it before they posted. Maybe certain topics just strike a chord in more people than others.

That was a great thread, but I didn't feel I had anything worth adding to it, so I kept my mouth shut.

You know, I think that brings up a point. A bigger problem might be that people attempt to add something to a thread when they really have no business doing so. Knowing when to interject and when not to interject are parts of "think before you speak".

Thanks for bringing that up GG (:

Just look at GTF, serious threads cause arguments ! Just because I stated in a 'What Religion are you' thread, that I was aithiest, I got loads of Chritians trying to convert me. So serious threads arn't always good, but just to chat with people and talk about usual crap in life seems to keep everyone happy :)

If there's one thing I can't control on GTPlanet, it's what people talk about (to a degree, of course). That's where I step back and let the community lead itself. Although they do result in interesting and revealing conversations, you can't really make people start threads about politics or abortion or religion. Besides, there's only so much you can debate a topic which everyone has their own opinion that can't be changed. You can talk about whatever you want in the Rumble Strip (as long as it's within the rules), and most people want to simply hang out with their online friends and chit-chat about things that affect all of us and life in general. It's fun and can be interesting, and we do it all the time in real life with our buddies - here it's just online.

As for the sub-forums, most of those originated from requests from people who said they didn't really feel comfortable starting thread about a more specific subject in the Strip. And, although they shouldn't feel this way, I see where they're coming from. Imagine you're a new member to the site browsing around. You might not even think about starting a thread on your favorite band or movie, but when you see those forums listed there, you go right ahead and do it! And, of course, the more threads, the more discussions, which bring all of us closer together.

I think what Loudmusic says is right, that a lot of members are under 18. They are confronted with serious topics like politics or religion every day, at school or by parents.

They come here to GTP to have some fun, chill out a bit, perhaps make some new friends and just talk about their favorite topics.
There is no easy way to change that, and i don't really can think of a reason why it has to change.
I like it the way it is now. That is one major thing that keeps me coming back to GTP still after 3 months.
