I just got and old surround sound sys(1997). from my father in-law,its been box up for about 6mos.when they took it apart they just pulled wires and boxed it all up and he dose'nt remember how it was hooked up.

this is what I was given.

Onkyo Mod tx-sv636 Receiver,amp,tuner.
JBL music 10 passive sub w/5 satilites.
Infinity Mod. BU-1 powered subwoofer.

I have never hooked up one of these system , but I think I know how I just want to make sure I'm doing it right.I hookup the passive sub to the main(front) L & R speaker terminals out on the receiver then the L & R satilites to out on the sub. Now this is the part I'm not sure of. Do I hook up the rear speaker out (on rec.) to the High levelin on the powered sub and then the rear satilites to the high level out from the sub. There is also pre out RCA connections on the Rec.(Multi source L & R,Front & Rear L & R, 1 black RCA for CTR and 1 black RCA for Sub.) On the powered sub there is also a low level in L & R. Thats why I believe that I am suppose to use the speaker terminals to hook up the powered sub. , or am i suppose to use the pre out connection since its a powered sub.

I guess the real question is can/should I hook up two subs's 1 powered 1 passive. I think they were both hooked up because I don't know how he would have ended up with two sub's.

any help would be appreciated Thanks

I highly doubt you would get any benifit with running the passive sub alongside the powered one. I would take the passive out of the equation and simply hook up the speakers to their proper speaker terminals and the sub to the sub pre-out.

Considering the JBL set was engineered to run together, it might sound like the Infinity is too powerful. Something you may not know is that to get sound from the sub while listening in stereo for TV and music you need to go into the menu and look for the Crossover setting which will then let the amp seperate the low frenquency sounds and send them to the sub (should have option to roughly choose between 50-150hz) so choose the best sounding hz setting.

Also the amp may have the option in the menu somewhere to set the front speaker to "small", since I'm sure the 5 speakers you got are little satiltes you'll want to make sure of this (since when set to "large" the crossover might not even function)

If all fails just hook up the JBL set with it's passive sub. Forget about all the other RCA pre-outs, those are not for what you're doing, they only carry a signal meant to hook up to powered speakers.

looks like like theres something wrong with it anyway, I hook it up using the passive sub
last nite(did'nt see your post until this morning). I only get sound out of the front main speakers when the it set on bypass. If I try to use any of the surround modes I get nothing out of any of the speakers. Guess I have to find another receiver.

Thanks for your help
