A question about memory and an un-deletable process...

Two short questions:

1. Am I able to upgrade my laptop's memory? My laptop has an integrated video card, but is it possible to upgrade its memory from 1Gb to 2Gb? Reason for this is to have a little bit more speed during everyday tasks, and to boost the framerate just a tad in GTR.

2. There is an annoying process that I can't get rid of. "WgaTray.exe" is its name and when I exerminate the process, it just pops back on. This thing is giving me a hard time in Microsoft Word, and it will not let me click links in Word. Problem started when installing SP3 of Windows XP.

Thanks in advance,

Yes, it's when using one of those features where you can press CTRL and the text to get yourself directed to a link on the internet. I've tried to delete the WgaTray.exe file form C:/Windows/System32 but I'm not allowed, even if I'm running as an Admin...

Windows Genuine Advantage is the "phone home" component of Windows. Ostensibly it's to allow Microsoft to verify that you have a genuine copy of Windows. I don't quite know how it's supposed to work. Perhaps it becomes aware if your product key/activation details are forged or reused in some way. I know that certain Macromedia/Adobe software does this.

Well I've looked around for some memory for my Vostro 1000 and internet sources report that my Dell supports up to 2Gb of memory. However, these sources also report that it stock comes with 512 of RAM while my system window says I'm having 894 of RAM. I'm wondering whether the integrated graphics card is being counted with that because if I'm really only having 512 mb of RAM, I definitly need to upgrade to 2Gb. If so, I'm going to remove the stock memory, and insert two sockets of 1024 Mb RAM memory 👍

That should speed it up a little bit, though Dell told me I'd get 1024 mb of RAM with my purchase... Meh, when dad recieves his Macbook, I'll try to snatch his Inspiron since that one doesn't have an integrated video card so I can upgrade everything :D

Well good luck with that laptop. If I had an extra one lying around, I wouldn't mind taking it apart. Though I heard that its a pain doing the process because its one unit.

That's why I'm keeping my Vostro 1000 if anything goes wrong with the Inspiron. If possible, I'm going to tro to upgrade the Inspiron to an AMD Turion duo core processor (2.0 Ghz perhaps?) if it's going to possible to upgrade the processor anyhow... but the memory will be upgraded to 2Gb and I'll also upgrade the ATI Radeon video card in it from 128 mb to 256 mb of RAM on the Inspiron. If I'm not getting the Inspiron, I'll be upgrading the memory of the Vostro 1000 to 2Gb.

On that, are there any free software programs that benchmark your hardware and/or software? I want to know what I'm precisely running, and what will be compatible. I don't want to be buying parts that will be downgraded... I've always wanted to see what the Vostro 1000 can be pushed to...

About the 894MB RAM, you probably have 1GB, but the integrated graphics don't have memory themselves, so they use a part of the 1GB ram in the laptop.

Be aware that, even if a laptop has a dedicated graphics card, the chances that you'll be able to put in a better one are remote.

Agreed. Go to http://support.euro.dell.com, choose "product support", and enter your service tag. From there you can find the shipping specification, which will tell you what the computer shipped with.

And ditto for the CPU. They are soldered to the motherboard in almost all newer laptops.

Might as well post my related RAM query in here (sorry to hi-jack your thread!)

I'm currently on 2x1GB RAM DDR2 (I believe!) with a ~2.2Ghz processor.

For some games, namely Football Manager 2009, as that is all I really use the PC for, gaming wise, I want improved performance. I know the processor isn't that great, but that's not as easy to change as RAM.

So I ask, if I were to upgrade to 2GB RAM, would it be worth the £40 for the performance increase I'd get?

I'm going to assume you mean going from your (2) 1Gb sticks to (2) 2Gb sticks?

More memory is never a bad thing. The only catch is if your computer can handle it. I had (2) 512 sticks and my E1705 could only take (2) 1Gb sticks. I'd look into that first. You can use Crucial Memory Advisor to see what kind and how much your machine can take.

Ha, sorry getting ahead of myself a touch!

I have 2x512MB RAM, I can go up to 2X1GB on that mobo, according to the manual.
