Basically, I was having doubts about this game and to be honest, didnt really fancy getting it. I ended up talking myself into it, and to be honest, Im regretting it. I will explain a few of my main teething points when it comes to this game.
1. AI
Now in my mind, A racing game is made much more exciting with competition, Wheras GT6's AI opponents are the slowest and most boring AI that I care to remember. I can see the need for a rolling start because if it wasn't Id have the full field in less that half a lap. I saw I think the european festival, with a 550PP limit IIRC, I was in a RUF BTR, And I was going up against VW Golfs? and a renault hatchback? its not just the AI are the slowest things on earth, The car selection for some events is just a joke.
Back to my point about the AI being slow, It ruins the fun in a game. I done the Lamborghini mission at brands hatch recently, and in the first lap after 2 corners I was 4 seconds ahead, The AI was in a much faster car, and had started earlier, yet I caught up in 2 corners and that was it. My point of the matter is, This game and its events just feel like a time trial with obstacles. If its a 4 lap race I will be passed them all by the first or second lap, and thats just boring..
2. Sounds
I am following a youtube channel named MotoGamesTV, which among other things does comparisons from game to game. Such as FM4 v GT6 or Project CARS v Asseto corsa or any of these inter-mixed. Its actually embarassing how far behind GT6 is in terms of sound quality, Not simply sound relevance, But other things that effect the sound that are hard for me to explain. Forza on its own is much better quality in terms of sound than GT6, And almost all of the new cars implemented in the game used recycled sounds that can be applied to at least 5% of other cars in the game, Such as the SRT Viper '13, the Pagani Huraya, the Audi Quattro S1, These are the ones I have personally used and noticed this, The SRT when I have used it only sounded like a viper under certain circumstances uses a recycled sound file, the Pagani only vaguely sounds similar and uses a recycled (albeit quite masked with the turbo) sound file again and the Audi.. Sounds nothing like I hoped it would, and again used a recycled sound file found in at least a few other cars.
3. What we ACTUALLY GOT
A question I have found myself asking when playing this game, Is there anything I should really have bought this for that I wouldnt have seen in GT5? Sure I got a few more tracks, A few more cars and a handling model thats only really noticable under certain conditions, They didnt fix many, or even any of the problems that the community brought to them, they say the graphics got updated, but to be honest I still hardly rate them. I think personally the tried to fix what wasnt broken, and then put in a little bit of stuff to make people say "oh this is new and so much better im going to buy this"
4. Standard cars
One of GT5's problems wasnt having standard cars, It was labelling the lower quality cars as standard cars, there are still standard cars in GT6 and a few of them have had a bit of an upgrade but most are still pretty poor. People seem to be a bit more satisfied now simply because they are not called standards any more and seemingly this makes them more pleased even though the cars are still just as bad. I think practically any other racing game's roster of cars is better than GT6's, I would rather have 200 Well detailed (sound handling and models) and individual cars (not duplicates) than have 1200, mostly poorly detailed and a sickening number of duplicates.
Some other minor points I would like to raise in my little rant
5. The possibility of just going online and joining a game and expecting to have a nice race or a good time is ruined by the fact there is a complete lack of structure in GT's online modes, bar racing and not racing, a lobby (and its participents) are defined simply by the host which in most cases, Is a bad thing. I used to play forza, and they had alot more fun playlists and alot more structured gameplay, which made things alot more organised and fun.
If I can make an example of another game that made good use of its online functionality, Was PGR4, (Project Gotham Racing). There was structure to its online features and it had fun game modes such as Bulldog or Cat and Mouse. But the main thing I liked about that game was daily official tournaments. It got people together alot better by introducing direct competition for people your level in equal grounds, And offered an option for those who wanted competition, instead of only time trials or externally organised events. I thought it was a great idea, I learned alot more competing against better people directly and I also met alot of better people who helped me which you wont find from trying to add someone on a time trial leaderboard. In saying that, It would be nice to have more ways of competing on GT6, Such as time trial leaderboards for certain cars and tracks or something along these lines.
Il add more as I find them through playing this game if I even choose to keep it.
