A Whinge and Whine

Hello folks , well I know many of you will think I'm being a whinger but I wanted to say something about GT4.
I find that I'm totally useless at tuning most cars , especially the high powered done up cars.

Even after using the car setup guides I can't seem to keep cars like the Chaparral 2d and J on the track and winning on tracks like Seattle Circuit/All American Championship.

I find that GT4 is way too technical , there are too many variables when trying to sort out car handling problems , the presets are useless so you have no real guide to work from when you want to tweak the settings.

Am I wrong ?

Thanks for reading my whinging and whining....

just takes practise using different setups :)
ofcourse it would help if pd gave us useful info on tuning, not just a couple of crappy sentences. a tutorial maybe? even info in the booklet

I imagine you're having trouble with the jumps? I'm prett sure the Chaparrals usually have problems when getting airborne. If that is your problem, just slow down a bit.

I used to suck at setting up too, I'm still no expert, but I found that reading the scrolling text in the setup menu really helped me, lets hope the same for you. :)

Well, IMHO, yes, you're wrong, but that's what makes horseraces. No one game is going to satisfy everybody who comes to it.

Be thankful that the suspension tuning is simplified from real life - variables they haven't even touched include corner weights (set by adjusting ride height individually at each wheel), caster, triple-adjustable struts (with hi- and low-speed bump settings), tire stagger (different size tires front to back, or even side-to-side for oval track racing), progressive-rate springs (which get stiffer the more they are compressed), and others...

Some more information would be helpful. In particular I would like to see a tire pyrometer chart which tells you the differential temperature across the contact patch of the tire. This helps you dial in camber appropriately to make sure the entire contact patch is working to its fullest in a corner.

Spend some time reading the excellent posts on the Settings and Tunings board; particularly the stickies. There is quite a lot to be learned from the careful work that others have done, and some of the explanations are very clear and understandable.

That being said, suspension settings can only do so much. There are times when you just have to take it slow, particularly on a tight course with some big elevation changes and bumps like Seattle. Some curbs at Seattle are poison; some can help you. Setting the suspension soft enough to deal with the railroad tracks may be costing you more time elsewhere on the course. All suspension tuning is a compromise, but there is advice available on the Tuning board to help.

Duke is right, besides, if you read the "//M-spec pocket guide to tuning", it states that some cars have a natural way of handling and even if you change the settings on the car it will not handle as you may want it to do, thus you'd have to change your driving style a little bit, and understand that PD was more focused on the handling difference between cars when they created this game; they did a good job in my opinion.
I thought of the same thing too when I tried to tune-up my Cizeta, and I know that there are many set-ups out there for the car, but it was pointless, I had to get used to the car and little by little I started handling it better.

Ciao....

PD may not give you tuning and set-up guides, but being a very generous person, I do.

Simply click on teh link below and in the first post you will find links to two very detailed tuning and set-up guides, simply right click and save as, then print them out.

Scaff's GT4 Tuning Guides

Each one contains lots of detail on the various settings, how they work, what they do and how to set them. With lots of pictures and diagrams to help and an example of tuning a car, I'm also more than happy to help with any tuning questions you may have.

I hope that the above helps you out, and for the record I actualy think that GT4 is not technical enough, personally I want far more range and scope to the tuning and set-up (particularly for dampers - far too limited).

I just bought the GT4 Official guide for $20AUD it explains everything from Controls to Photomode. I was gonna post the tuning pages but ill ask an admin first.

No, that would violate the publisher's copyright, and it will not be allowed. Sorry.

I manage to set cars up to behave the way I like them to, but things would be much easier if PD was using meaningful units (springs = N/cm, shocks = N/cm/s, etc....). I would also need the front/rear weights, this would make me happy, I could fiddle with the settings knowing what to expect instead of guessing.

Like everyone says, GT4 is a game of trial and error. If something doesn't work for you, tweak it a tiny bit and see if that makes a difference. And, IMO, the Chapparal 2j isn't a very good race car, i think others are better for the buck (Amuse S2000 GT1, Amuse CarbonR, and high-tuned Skyline R33-34's.)

I just wish the tuning system went into more depth. I want as close to real life as possible...Without getting your hands dirty:)

SOmeone might also want to point out, you tune fro the parts of the track where you run the best, in other words, pick your point to pass.

Yeah well said , I agree we need a proper booklet included with the game !
