Why?! Whenever I try to direct connect with someone on AIM, it gives me this message:

(Screen name) has not responded; no connection was made. (If you and your buddy are each behind a different firewall, then the connection will not work; check with your network administrator if you are not sure about your firewall status.).

For a start, do you use a firewall? If so, check what firewall is installed.

If your buddy is also using a firewall thats is different to yours (eg: Your firewall = McAfee - Your buddy's = Norton) than by what that message reads, it won't work. Close your firewall and try again.
 
To say that two people using different firewalls won't be able to connect is a bit weak to be honest. All firewalls do is close the TCP Ports on your machine, so you simply need to find out which ports AIM is trying to use, then you and your buddy need to open those ports on your firewalls to enable communication.

It's that simple.

Also, as Eddy says, if you and your buddy drop your firewalls for a couple of minutes, you'll be able to test whether it's a firewall issue.

If you're using Norton, to find out what porsts AIM wants to use, simply configure a monitor rule that monitors the actions of the AIM application. It will then write a log entry every time AIM tries to use the internet, and you'll be able to see what ports it's using.
