How does the Sharkport work? What hardware / software does it provide?

Heres the thing ...

I have Playstation 2 Linux and with it I can access my memory cards. I can grab the files (save games) from them and send them to my Windows computer across the network. Does the Sharkport do anything different? Does it edit the files or something? If it's just reading the raw files and saving them to the hard drive how would what I can do be any different?

Before I go to the trouble of messing with my PS2 Linux install it would be nice to know how Sharkport works. Any input would be fantabulous.

Sharkport basically does the same thing that U can do with the linux kit. It uses software, and a usb cable. What is the file extension of the saves U transfer with the linux?

Actually, I was unable to see the game files. I need to see if there is a plug in for Linux so I can read the Memory Card file system.
