About to buy a computer monitor -- any recommendations?

My monitor is taking it's last few breaths, so I'm need to buy a new one before I grab a hammer and put this one out of misery. Before I started researching/shopping on my own, I thought I'd see if you guys know of any gems that are exceptional monitors for the $$.

I don't really have a preference for LCD or CRT, as I have equal likes and dislikes about both. So I'll just be looking for the best bang for the buck.

Thanks!

if you want a cheap CRT, try and get a Packard bell. we had one, and it was such a brilliant monitor. warmed up in much less time than most monitors (close to LCD warmup times) and immense refresh rates.

IMO, Viewsonic makes some awesome CRT monitors. I bought an A90f+ almost a year and a half ago and couldn't be happier with it. It's awefully heavy though because it's a CRT.

I have no idea how their LCDs perform.

If you want a CRT, go for Samsung. Probably the best and cheapest CRTs on the market.

^^ agreed on samsung. Best CRT monitors I've used to date. Their colour replication is damn awesome for graphics stuff. Most of their LCD's are also damn good, though they don't do nearly as well for gaming as the competition.

The Hyundai LCD monitors are the best bang for your buck LCD's out there. They're touted as one of the best panels for gaming and for their good colour reproduction. The prices are also damn nice.

Yeah, if you're in the market for LCD monitors that is definately the crown jewel of the bunch. Its got the performance of a $500 LCD for about $340. Not to mention its the monitor I will be buying for my newly built system as soon as I save up the money. PM Event about it for more information, as he recently purchased one.

Bought one of these new last year and have loved every second of it. (of course I was coming off a rather poor crt). So far I haven't personally seen a monitor that delivers a better picture. Mine wasn't refurbished as the newegg ones are.

Aren't most of the internals in any given monitor made in korea in the same factories as many of their competitors? Maybe I'm thinking of flat panel tv's.

I whole-heartedly endorse this product. I love it. I'm coming from a Samsung CRT, which I liked, but this is freaking amazing. Gaming is awsome, no ghosting at all. The only ghosting I get is when I drag windows around or scroll slowly, but it is minimal. Great price. 👍 Great performance. 👍

Or you could get the 19" Samsung SM-913N which is pretty much exactly the same as the L90D+ except quite a bit cheaper. Going for approx. £210 if you look around atm.

I'm getting two of them, can't wait :)

I'd definately go for an LCD. Much less strain on your eyes. I switched from a pretty decent Samsung CRT (957mb) to a 17" Syncmaster LCD and haven't regreted it once.

I'd skip the 19" LCD:s though with their resolution, the pixels are too big for my taste. Instead go for a 17" with the same res (1280*1024) or if you got loads of cash, a bigger one with 1600*1200.

Go for a LCD because they're better than CRT's. If your on a tight budget, get a CRT.

This is the monitor that I'm thinking about getting now after reading about it on Tom's Hardware, it performs somewhat better than the L90D+ but it does cost an extra $100 .. so we'll see ..

4/5 ms is nuts. If you have the money to throw around then buy all means go for it. Not that i've tested either of them but imo you'd similar performance with the L90D+, i don't think it'd effect your experience too much. But like i said, if you've got the money, it's up to you :P

Its probably gonna be my dad's money, because he needs a monitor for the crappy system he just bought and is taking mine when I go back to college in August.

Here's THG's reviews of both:

ViewSonic
Hyundai

Sounds like the ViewSonic is a good bit better. Although the response time isn't that great from their chart. I like the styling of the VS more too. But it all comes down to how much the father is willing to pay.
