There are several elements to the game play in GT3.

I would like to ask the question...

What are the "absolute must" elements of this game?

Endurance racing?
Simulation Tires?
Super Soft Tires?
Drifting?
Free Run Hotlaps?
Certain Cars From All Drivetrains?
Road Cars?
Race Cars?
Wet Races?
Rally Races?
Drag Strip?
F1?
JGTC, DTM, LM?
*Tuning? :D

Basically I would like to hear opinions from as many of you as possible regarding what you all consider to be the absolute must have elements of this game.

How do you spend your time playing this game?

Anything I didn't mention is more than welcome and anything that fits into what I have mentioned is still good for conversation.

Hope to hear from you all soon and really hope to hear from as many of you as possible.

Remember, gt3 is going to be eclipsed by gt4 pretty soon and if you want to leave a mark on what you think the best part of this game is, then please, post in here.

Oh, and please remember to put some thought and effort into your post. :D
Well formed thoughts and well written post are good. 👍

Tuning of cars, not just purchasing parts but changing gear ratios, suspension setting, downforce. That sought of thing.

The selection of cars, combined with the tuning. I hate playing games like PGR now cause I can't tune the cars to work with me as much, and it drives me nuts... call me a GT3 brat... :D

most definately the hot laps. free run, the cars, and tuning are the three must haves. now that I have 100%, it's the only thing that keeps me buisy while I wait for the next GT.

Knowing that the game that I am playing has the best graphics, car selection, and physics of any game I have ever played, and to be able to live any sort of dream of mine in any car that I have ever dreamt of driving in real life at any time. I also like the thrill that I get from driving some of the fastest and most famous cars in the world on some of the most famous tracks in the world. I, and everyone else, I'm sure, can only hope that GT4 will take this all to a new and improved level.

For me, I have dabbled in drifting quite a bit, and although I spent a lot of time around it, I've probably had the most satisfying time just running stock road cars in Arcade. It was really exciting running an underpowered, stock RX-7 Infiniti III, or just running any car on any race.

It's definitely an experience I'm looking forward to in GT4, with the expanded car selection. Gonna have a lot of fun playing with the vintage Japanese cars like the 240Z, as well as a lot of the new European cars like the SL55. I only wish I had people around me that played competitvely, I've only had one really exciting vs. race... came down to the last turn and it was an exciting finish. Unfortunately, his MR2 Spyder had more pull than my S13 and I lost by the slimmest of margins, all because I took a really ugly line around the last turn. Aaaaaaaarg.

Head-to-head competition is what I believe makes people better, I'm pretty sure I'd be more inclined to learn how to tune if I had that.

But now I'm getting off track...

I pick up gt3 for the free run hotlaps!

Chasing your own ghost, shaving off tenths of seconds is fun! (and it is nice to watch your car on a lap, watching the suspension and bodyroll)! Better than a replay IMO

and this with any car, not just s class

Edit, the choice is confirmed by the fact that Prologue does not have this option and this game is on the shelf instead of in the PS2

Mainly I want as many circuits as they can jam on the disc. I'm not talking cookie cutter fantasy ones that they run in both directions to increase the circuit number. I want REAL circuits. Monaco, Nurburgring, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta, SPA, Suzuka, Fuji...etc etc. I want car choices, but don't need that many. Sure the game may have 700+ cars, but maybe 100 or them are worth anything. I want RUF, Porsche, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lotus, Fiat, Alfa, Pagani...etc. I want both current road cars, "classic" race and road cars and current race cars. I want more race cars, ones that don't suck, P1 and P2 open wheel, GT Porsche RSRs, maybe even more F1 cars (current ones, and ones from the 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s and earlier). Japanese cars, well they will also be a huge part of the game and I think the way they are represented now is fine. I would like to see the NSXs updated though.

I would also like to see more realistic tuning limits on some cars. I mean tuning a RUF or Zonda to 1000hp+ may be possible in real life, but how realistic is it? For Porsches and RUFs I'd like to see the drivetrain options that they actually have (same for all cars I suppose). I want a 911 turbo to be available to me in 4wd or RR.

I want tougher racing, a smarter AI (don't we all), or some kind of performance limits so you can't just go in and blast the field. Gt2s HP limits didn't really work.

I want more cars on the grid, as many as 20 (or more). Though I understand why it is limited to 6 cars right now.

I want tor acing to be racing. I want to worry about tires, gas, mechanical breakdowns. This for 2-30 laps and enduros.

I want weather changes (the ability to dive intot he pits for wet tires if it rains). I want day to night racing.

I want a "circuit" config. I'd like to be able to open up Grand Valley East or turn on a chicane at Tsukuba.

I want Rally to be more realistic. I want to run some classic rally stages, along with fantasy stages (like the new grand canyon).

---

Now for GT3 specifically. The game design is very nice, IMO. GT2 was clunky and poorly organized. GT3 is simple and to the point, which is good. I honestly can't think of anything I'd subtract from it, other than the "test courses" races in the series, "like the wind" is ok.

I've done OLR in GT3, the arcade mode/free run works well for hot lapping. The races series vs. the AI are fine too, even the arcade mode is ok.

In general GT3 is just fine the way it is and anything I want (see above) has been addressed in Gt4, well the things within reason that is.

---

So must have elements in the GT series?

- different level AI race series (beg, int, pro) getting more difficult and or longer as your progress
- Enduro racing (though this isn't true endoru racing, it is more like actual GP races...around 2 hours)
- Time Trials (I'd like to see more of them actually)
- free run of courses (like in arcade mode) for OLR
- rally or rally-cross
- road cars and race cars through the years (F1, DTM, JGTC, sportscars, etc)
- advanced tuning, even tuning within the races themselves

Things like drag racing don't appeal to me, but just because I am not into doesn't me it shouldn't be there.

Drifting is another one. I do enjoy it time to time and at best maybe there should be a "drift" series in GT...but then again drift events are "judged" not run on best time. So how do you let an AI judge? As far as just taking a car out and "drifitng" it that can be done in the free run mode. You don't need a specific mode for it. i never did understand GT3's arcade drift option.

.....actually, the only answer should be: All of the above!! If you want to finish the game!! hehehe :sly:

Well, I would have to say physics above all else. Not so much realistic physics, but predictable physics. No game will ever have perfect physics. But if they're predictible, the game will be pretty playable.

Now as far as being fun. A game needs two basic things. Cars and tracks. The main thing that hurts GT3 is the limited number of tracks. This will be eleveated with GT4's 50 tracks.

There are about a thousand little things that go into a great racing sim. Tunability, feeling of speed, control, sound just to name a few. But to be honest. all that won't matter that much if the physics, cars and tracks are there. IMHO :)

Ok, well let me ask you guys something that another member brought up with me once before...

If you had to vote on "best" anything in the game for each of these categories, what would you vote...

Best:
Road Cars: FF, FR, MR, 4wd, RR?
Race Cars: FF, FR, MR, 4wd
F1?
Best Tracks? (top 5)

Also, any special category awards...
Best Highly modified Road and Race Cars
Best low mod road and race
Best stock road and race
Best "cult" car (trueno ss, mini?)

Anything else you can think of is welcome as well. :D

Thanks for the replies so far, keep 'em coming. ;)

We need some competition in the RR category.

As well as the RGT, we need the 911, Renault Alpine, Fiat 126 & original Beetle (and anything else I've forgotten). Even the Skoda Rapide would be good :D

Road cars for FR would be the C5 Z06 Corvette, just because I love it and it would be my favorite car in real life. As far as MR and 4WD race cars go, I would have to say the GT-one and Tommy ZZ2, because it was my first "race" car that I won and also because it reminds me of the McLaren F1 more than any other car in the game and thats always good. My favorite 4WR road car is hard to pick because I don't really have a favroite, the 22b, R34, and most of the evos are nice though. For my FR race car I will have to go with the C5-R Vette, just because, yet again, there's nothing like a 427 small block rumbling right in front of you. I like all of the F1 cars not only for their near perfect handling but also for the legacy that they carry, knowing that each car is modelled after an actual F1 car raced by a famous driver is very exciting. My top five tracks are as follows:
1. Monaco
2. Laguna Seca
3. Tokyo R 246
4. Midfield 2
5. Trial Mountain

The reason behind my rankings, is because I always prefer the actual tracks, because I like to watch a televised race and be able to know where all the good lines are on that particular track.
