I had a vacation in Washington DC last week... here are some of the pictures:

This one is the greenway in Williamsburg, Virginia, looking north toward the governor's palace. It's a really beautiful place, Williamsburg.

Congress! Or, the capitol, as it's more commonly known.

Fairly ominous, no? This is the Lincoln Memorial, from the outside.

The Vietnam Veterans' Memorial is a really surreal experience -- everyone is quiet, there's flowers around. If you haven't been, it's wise to go.

President Lincoln, in limestone. He's not as big as you'd think in his monument.

The White House. The president left on December 20, the day before I got there, for a vacation to his ranch near Crawford, Texas.

The Library of Congress was housed in a fairly ugly building, so I just took a picture of the sign. :)

For those of you who haven't been to Williamsburg, I must explain: The people there pride themselves on maintaining the image of the town as it was 50 years after it was colonised (in 1699). Employees dress in period costumes and have period occupations like blacksmith and silversmith.

The highlight of the entire trip was seeing this. Those of you that frequent the Auto Forum will know why.

Did you happen to go to where the Declaration of Independance is housed? If you did, did you happen to see or hear a man yelling "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY!!!" If you did, he took away my friends camera:p Foolish man. But he was only doing his job:p

I assume that's in the Smithsonian... and I didn't have enough time to visit it, unfortunately.

I suppose that's because flash photography could damage the Declaration?

Yes, that's it! It really is a nice place to go. Too bad you couldn't go:(

Well, the Declaration is encased in this special green glass "thingy." It is supposed to protect the document from harmful rays. But i don't see why the flash would harm it since it is in thsi special encasement:confused:

Yeah -- I only had about nine or ten hours in total (not counting when I slept) in Washington. I knew if I went, I would've probably gotten wrapped up in it and missed my flight or something.

When I went to France three and a half years ago, they were letting us take flash pictures of the Mona Lisa (and people were, in droves). Wonder why they protect the Declaration like that.

W8, man! I wanted to get closer but there was someone sitting in it who was suckered into paying way too much for a family sedan with more power than he'll ever need. :D

Its in the National Archives if I remember correctly.

Did you manage to go to the new Spy Museum? There's some really neat stuff there, but the line is about two blocks long. You should have gone to the Auto Show too.

Nah, that was the problem -- we saw ads for it everywhere, but of course the Smithsonian would've been number one on our 'visit' list for museums, and the Spy Museum a distant second. And we didn't go to the Smithsonian. We were busy! :D

You should have gone to the auto show, too.

We couldn't stay that long because of a business trip I had coming up soon after, which ended up not happening for various reasons anyway.

I went to DC a few years ago... saw the FDR memorial, White House, Congress, Washington Monument, etc. We saw the Declaration of Independence also, and there was a guy there just like Jubula stated. The whole reason flashes were not allowed to be used was because it could make the Declaration fade (the witing on it to be more specific).

i went to D.C. and Williamsba few years ago with my school and we saw almost evrything there was to see. Colonial Williamsburg truly is a beutiful place.

by the way did you get a cahnce to eat at "A Good Place to Eat" while you were in Williamsburg.
