Well, I don't think too many have it or know it, but I think we should add WinAce Archiver file extensions to the upload list: .ace

Listen to this. I was bored one night so I decided to put all my car pictures in a WinAce Archive. The total size of all my car pictures was 4,293,631 bytes. When I had finished add them to the archive, the file size of the archive was a mear 48 bytes

So, if we added .ace extensions to the upload list, people with WinAce could distribute things larger than the file size limit without having to worry about it. :)

Eh, I think you goofed something up. It's not possible to compress something that much. Check for a .001, or a .a01, or something like that. It may have created a series of files and spanned the archive through them.

RAR has the best compression, but is slow and I've found it to be less reliable. ZIP is the universal standard, and there's a reason we use standards.

You might have been able to get that much compression (48 kilobytes) out of a raw text file, but I don't believe it could do nearly that much damage to image's file size.

Well...I just did a little experiment on my Automotive folder (all JPEG's) in "My Pictures" with ZIP, RAR, and ACE compressions. Here's the results...

Original size of "Automotive Folder": 40.4 MB
ZIP Compression: 38.2 MB
RAR Compression: 17.6 MB
ACE Compression: 16.7 MB

Wow! Now that's what I call compression! I'll add it to the list of files, although it's still got a long ways to go before it becomes popular enough to consider it a standard. :(

ace.....hmmm....
Is that like a zip thing where u must open it with another program or is it an actual picture file you can veiw by itself.

It's another compression format. There is another one called Stuff It which does a pretty good job, and another that uses the ARJ extention but I don't know what it's called.

Something else that might need to be checked on ... are ACE and RAR "lossy" or "lossless" compression? Meaning, is all the data intact when the files are extracted, or does it strip some of the information in-order to gain compression ratios. If it knows that the file is a jpeg, it might lower the quality of the image before it puts it in the compacted file.

ZIP is lossless. You get back everything that you put into it.

Mpeg3 is lossy. You lose sound quality by encoding CD Audio into an Mp3.

That's what I suspected at first, too, but I checked the decompressed files and they all seem to be the exact same size as the originals.

Alexy, I linked to Winace.com along with all the other software in my expiremental results posted above.

Would it be possible to add rar to the valid file extensions for File Attachments too, please, Jordan. Not a very pressing matter, I know

No, but it is a good file type. It's now included.
