With the GT racing landscape already seeing significant manufacturer involvement, another top automaker is about to throw its hat in.

SPEED.com has learned that Honda, through its American subsidy Honda Performance Development, plans to enter the GT ranks with its new Acura NSX, potentially by as early as 2014.

Thought we knew this already? Announced by Honda when they unveiled the concept car...

Don't think so. I believe they were considering it at the time. Now they are just confirming its a go, only now they are waiting on what will happen with GT in 2014.

Well actually they have not said they are racing anywhere officially yet. They said a GT platform will be made. No mention of GTE(although stated that would be a good avenue).

The real focus of the NSX GT platform is the 2014 Super GT season. GTE, GRand-AM, GT3 are all series that Honda will watch for regulations developments. Right now Hybrids are forbidden in GTE, Grand-Am, GT3..

Hopefully Honda will grow back the attachments it lost 10 years ago and will go back to what made them great so long ago!

Damn, took me 20 minutes to find it but I knew I posted it somewhere! :p

Quite optimistic as there's quite abit of difference between this from the Autoweek Article:

Honda Performance Development president Erik Berkman revealed that plans to race the mid-engined car are already under discussion. He said that Honda will most likely develop the NSX to take on Ferrari, Porsche and Chevrolet in accordance with the Le Mans GTE rule book.

And the Speed article:

Steve Eriksen, Vice President of Honda Performance Development, has confirmed the NSX will race once the production car hits the showroom floor. He said they are currently exploring all potential avenues, including both domestically and abroad

Like I said, they were considering it in March, they've confirmed now in September. Now discuss, foo :p

What exactly got confirmed RaceCar? What is the "it" you say" We still don't know if its GTE, DTM, GT500, GT3 etc. A racecar will be built is very generic. A GT car will be built is very non-specific

GT racing is a broad category.

By it, I mean racing the car itself. It was under discussions back in March but now is confirmed. Hasn't been said in what GT class it'll be in so like I said, they are waiting on 2014 regs.

Probably they're waiting on new regs to use some sort of hybrid/kers system...

Last time I recalled an NSX in any kind of GT racing, it was back in 2001 or so with Peter Cunningham in the GT division of (then) Speedvision World Challenge. I even have some faint memories of the Acura NSX GTP race car of the early 1990s. I'd be very interested seeing what results from this news.

Yes sir! Those Real Time Racing NSXs where pretty fasy! But as the class evolved and the BMW M3 GT-R came in they just couldn't keep up. Those where the golden years of WC! Unfourtunately it suffered the same faith all series do when the manufacturers get too involved and are allowed to run the show...
Back to the NSX! The most recent ones I guess are the Super GT cars! Really looking forward to this car, hoping Honda will go back to making exiting and interesting cars!

I'm not too sure that the NSX will rejoin the Super GT ranks anytime soon, or at least in the GT500 that is. Didn't Honda just spend quite a few pennies just on the HSV? I'm sure they'll want to maximize this car to its furthest point before it's dated, just like the SC.

Pretty sure this is not headed to Super GT. Last I checked, the regulations change basically forced Honda to retire the NSX because it meant they could no longer run a Rear Engined car. They did build a front-engine version, but ultimately that got canned.

SuperGT is merging with DTM in 2014. Look for official announcements and details later this month. NSX is still on the table, but will have BOP because it's MR layout. There is no other car they could use, unless they come up with another coupe before then or keep with the HSV.

Last I heard of that merger was that it fell trough because of the DTM people not wanting the SuperGT teams getting their chasis built by Dome. They basically wanted them to buy the Dallara cars to bring costs down...

That's what I heard as well. The deal fell though ages ago for that very reason.

Where are you getting this information?
