I know you need to make money, and banner ads the most popular method to do so. Today was the first day that I noticed the ads seem to be expanding outside the borders it originally placed and covering the content of the site. They require me to click a close and then explode up again when the mouse flys over. It quiet irritating.

I am all about supporting the site by supporting the sponsors but can the ads be contained to their allotted space so I can actually view the site?

Sorry, I hate negative feedback.

See, that isn't really very helpful advice for most people, who tend to be less frequent users of the site. His point is valid; "expanding" ads seem to have proliferated lately, and they definitely are quite irritating, particularly (as I see before I log in) for those who aren't members, because they see a whole sidebar of advertisements on the right. Considering that the interstitial (full-page) ads also seem to have increased in frequency lately, I suspect that the costs of maintaining the site have, for whatever reason, sharply increased in the past couple of weeks.

He said he's all about supporting the site, so how is what I said not really helpful?

I never have seen these ad's to begin with, so I have no idea how bad it is. IF you are coming here frequently, and I'm sure a lot of people do, even if just to get things like tune's, advice or news, going premium is really not that much. They have to pay the bills one way or another.

Here is what I am talking about.

That all does look like a pain.

Now I can't even remember where the buy premium section is...

In the top right corner, click "My GTPlanet"

Scroll down to near the bottom, and on the left should be "Paid Subscriptions"

Click it and the next page will have where you pay for Premium.

I have google chrome, and no ads have ever popped up. But that's maybe 'Cuz i'm in New Zealand, and gtPlanet has national ads.

Yikes, those expanding ads are getting out of hand, sorry about that. Ad revenue dropped 87% last month, so I had to scramble and enable more intrusive banners in hopes they could get things back to normal. If they are going to be that aggressive, though, it looks like they will have to be disabled.

I can understand 1 instrusive banner, Jordan, but I was just trying to log in from the front page of the forums and could not because there were 2 banners blocking the log-in box. Please limit it to 1.

How can GTP control the EXTREME advertising banners that block the login screen? The ones that have options to close, DON'T close. And the ones that have no option to close don't go away.
I purchased the premium membership so I don't have to deal with ads, and to support the 'planet. But it gets annoying to have to surf around the site to find a screen with a clear login area, and then have to type superfast before another ad pops up and covers it.

You guys are still seeing them? I disabled them three days ago and I didn't see any more so I assumed the changes had been applied. I'll get in touch with the ad network to figure out what's going on, but they are definitely getting out of hand.

I don't know if its gone yet but theres a ad called "halo legends" or something like that, its one of those full page ones, but if you skip it or watch it for 15secs it goes away for a second and pops up again, its getting annoying.

I think this might be taken care of. I seem to have gotten the non-expanding version of an ad that did expand a few days ago. It's the "hotspot to go" ad from Sprint.

Yeah, I just saw that, too - I'll see about disabling that until they get it fixed.

They should be gone now. After talking things over with the ad network, apparently the configuration changes I made were not applied retroactively to campaigns that were already in the system. They've refreshed everything for me so the new rules should now block out all the auto-expanding banners.

Can I just say one thing - If I ever move to the States, I'll be running my own "Jordan for President" campaign..

👍

With auto-expanding banners as the main campaign advertisement strategy, no less! :sly: :p

Glad to see this is fixed, Jordan. 👍

OK, nearest one I could find. Jordan, one of the ads that popped up this morning, was for "eCig" the new electronic advertisement. Wasn't sure if this ad fit within the parameters of GTPlanet's scope.

Just a heads up, no response necessary.

I never seemed to get any of these. :odd: But LSX, if i understand correctly, he wasn't logged in this appears on the main page, so Premium won't remove them on the main page because it's not part of the forums so your not logged in anyway.

*bump*

I have had several instances today of ads with sound popping up at the bottom of the thread page, it is not always possible to disable the sound and they are fairly loud. Not sure if this has been a normal thing since I use ABP on firefox but I am trying out Chrome today.

I just saw it too - working to get it removed now.

Here is a new ad showing up every time underneath the last post of the page as I know of.

And?... That's quite common ad placement to be honest, is it popping out of that banner and blocking posts?

Edit: T'reed xD

From,
Chris.

It tends to sometimes. And this is the first GT5 pre-ordering ad I have seen on the site.

I'm just testing a new ad server. Nothing should "extend" beyond the dimensions of the banners there.

Why?

The economy, I suppose. Companies generally spend most on advertising during the last quarter of the calendar year, so it's always cyclical. Last year, though, I think it sort of masked how bad things really are.
