PD announced today on their japanese website that it is initiating a test period for the advanced download option (april 2nd - april 9th 2009). If I understand it correctly, the option (although available) has not been in use. Apparently PD have reason enough to start using it anyway. Maybe just for GT TV, but who knows....

I think this regards to the download option in the options menu.

We can set it to a value which downloads some new opening movies and showroom scenes if I remember right.

So they might give us some new content of scenes and backgrounds or something like that. Useless..

You may be right, but saying that they now have content that relates to us all (see highlighted text above) goes beyond some opening movies and showroom scenes. Those are optional things, and the way I understand that phrase, is that they have something coming that is not optional. The way I see it is that we're getting a game update. Wishfull thinking? probably. :dopey:

The advanced download option works as a p2p service, instead of hosting content on 1 server all the ps3 that are downloading the content also act as servers thus reducing internet traffic costs for PD and reducing the server load. Hopefully this won't only be used for GT-TV programs but also for game updates so that we don't have the problems anymore of the previous updates.

Its good to see that they are testing this, maybe they are preparing for something, maybe an update, maybe gt5:dopey:.
Also "Sony Computer Entertainment is set to make a global announcement this week regarding the PS3"
 
i think GT5 will be a massive download, thus this is getting ready for that day. they will get it all setup, then charge you some how.
 
Most likely GT5 is only going to be available on Blu-ray; I very much doubt we'll be able to purchase it through PSN.
 
I wouldn't like to attempt to drag lord-knows how many gigabytes of data down my 1500kpbs connection. Blu-ray GT5 for me, I'd want the hard copy anyway.

Last year Gran Turismo 5 Prologue was released in the USA (well April 15th 2008 to be exact) the Spec 3 update came 6 months later on October 3rd 2008, in the in game news section the date format is day/month/year, So we are within a month from the year anniversary from the US release, hopefully their will be some news or a spec update but im not holding my breath

So much for translation tools. I ran that japanese news text through another online translator (Babylon) and it comes out a bit differently (and more accurate I think): From this translation it turns-out they are talking about the FAQ content, not game content. :ouch:

Changes to a portion of the update

This is to notify that there has been a change to the contents of the "Gran Turismo 5 Prologue" update planned for Friday, August 1st.

The "Advanced Download Option" service added to [Network] under the Option menu will become available in line with a future "Playstation 3" System Software update.

Until the relevant update comes into effect, the setting is disabled, and will be OFF even if it is set to ON or OFF in this menu. Because of this, please note that there will be a discrepancy with the related entry in the Manual.

We will make another announcement once the service start date has been determined. Thank you for your understanding.

Now in the March 30, 2009 news update they have stated that they will begin testing. This means that the required PS3 firmware update is in place or will become available before the testing begins (speculation: firmware 2.70?) In the news update they also included a little FAQ list about the Advanced Download Option.

Hope this clarifies some things, looks like they are only taking about the downloading of GTTV episodes. For more information about the advanced download option you can read up on it in the in-game manual unde GT-TV. And since they haven't translated the news item in english and the other languages so they can be viewed in the in-game news section I assume the testing of the feature will only be carried out by users who have the Japanese version.

Well, a PS3 update is now available, coinciding with the ADO test start date. :)

So its like 3 new videos are up for grabs and speed testing. I think not only do you need the Japanese copy of the game, but maybe only viewable if you sign in to your Japanese PSN account. I could be wrong here though.
