why? that car is so ugly, like I know drifting isn't about style, but what the.. the car isn't like even cool, a 240sx or 180sx looks like about 100% cooler in a drift they appear to be longer an lower... the Ae86 just looks like the worst car ever. I read that it is a great drift car but in all honesty tell me what appeals to you all about this car, cause i am lost?

I never plan to become a 'drifter'. I play GT3 and drive a boat, I could really careless about drifting althougt it is extremely badass, I like fast 1/4 mile times I love v8s.

In other words, you're into cars, not driving? Anyone with even a tiny bit of skill can launch a car at full use of traction and at that eliminates skill from the equation. 1/4 mile is a competition between cars, not drivers.

Heheh... got a little carried away, sorry about that, but I had just read his 240 post which seems to be completely off-topic, and then this one which seems to have no purpose except to start a flame war. Seems that this guy really has something to prove, and it kinda pinched me the wrong way.

its tougher then you think I guess, drifting is far harder then a drag race, but you think its all gas 100% down the track well it is but it is also about building an engine, beable to find traction from 500-6000 horses... a top fuel drag car does 0-100 in 1.0 or less 0-300 in 3
thats not a car that is a ****en machine.

My point exactly, it's about the car, not the driver =)
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, after all the 1/4's are where I first got into cars. I'm just saying that eventually you will get bored of 1/4 like I did, and then you'll be back here learning how to drift again.

If any of youhave ever watched any videos from Option or other such companies in Japan where they advertise drifting, you will realize why the 240sx/Silvias and the AE86 are used.
Both cars are very well equipped, with rear wheel drive and manual transmissions with decent stock hp. Plus, when drifting there is always the chance of you drifting too far, so therefore these two cars in particular are cheaper to replace parts on because they were bulk made and many companies make parts for em. Thats all I have to say.

the AE86 is sorta like an old school thing....remember that it is released in the early/mid eighties....this was before japanese manufacturers became efficient at making turbo vehicles on a large scale. And S13 Silvias and 180SX didn't come till 1988/9.

there's alot of other reasons why the AE86s are popular as a cult car, helped alittle bit by Keichii Tsuchiya too....as one of the first few to popularise this sport of drifting.....formerly just touge.

and don't forget these little buggers are extremly lightweight=power to weight ratio....

like toyomatt84 said, these days it's more popular to drift 180s and S13s cos it's just simply cheaper to buy and modify....as some don't even bother about panel repair....it'll get bent again anyway:lol: it's one of the reasons Sileightys came about....cos S13 panels were somehow cheaper to repair:confused:

yea like doGmAI said...the drift king himself helped popularize it...especially when he went up against a GT-R in a downhill and won..(grip vs. drift)...and ..like he said..they're affordable...and if you can get your hands on a GT-S (85-87.....84 they only made AE86 SR5's) its even better cuz most of them came equipped with a LSD..and rear brake rotors...weight to power is great...even to this day..the 4AG-E can put up a fight

Didn't they have a bunch of threads like this? I think if you get into drifting just because you've seen Initial D or like the Hachi Roku then please don't trash it... Learn about how it helps to control your car or help you improve your knowledge of your car. It's not just to show off and say hey look at me. Don't get me wrong I like the car and the show but, sheesh it's kinda like when kids watch wrestling and then try to go do the same thing at home.
