Alright, I'm really pissed off right now, so please don't take offense at anything I say or do in the next coupld of days that May offend. "Why?" might be your obvious reaction, and my answer is in this little story that follows (for all those who don't know, I am the Section Leader of the Alto Saxes at my school, and they all know and supposedly recognise my authority...):
Today, on my way to lunch from the gym after 5th period, I happened to walk past the band room and got stopped in the hall by the band instructor, who striked up a conversation with:

B.I.: "Hey Josh, You know, someone in 5th period band left their instrument out yesterday."
Me: "And...?"
B.I.: "Well, Period 2 found it lying there on the floor this morning-"
Me: "Whose instrument was it?"
B.I.: "It was a saxophone..."
Me thinking (can't be mine; I put mine away...): "Which one?"
B.I.: -silence; smirk beginning to form on face-
Me: "Me? -smirk increases- That's impossible, I put mine away-"
B.I.: -smiling now- "Nope."
Me: "Yes, I remember specifically taking my instrument, putting it in its case, and putting the case into the closet."
B.I.: "Well, you did put it into the case, but not the closet..."
At this time I got really mad in an instant (kind of thing that doesn't happen to often). I almost blew up at him, but decided to say:
Me: "What do they want for it?"
B.I.: "Cookies..."
Thus ended our conversation after a brief arguement. Through the day I have been contemplating this action that supposedly took place, and I have reached a set of conclusions.

One: I'm their superior, they have no right to play tricks on me or
to get anything out of me.
Two: That is my personal saxophone. Overall, it put me down
$3,000; which is not something to mess around with.
Granted, the band does do things of this sort, but usually the
item being ransomed is no more than $30 in value.
Three: They know me, they know my schedule, they know I can't
make them cookies. If they want cookies so badly, they can drive
to the store and pick them up themselves.
Four: Giving them cookies would be like rewarding them for
committing an illegal act, which I refuse to do.
Five: The Band Instructor knew that it was my personal
saxophone, that it was expensive, and that I can't meet their
ransom. Not to mention the fact that, oh yeah, he sanctioned it.
He let them go on with what they were doing.
Six: I specifically remember putting my saxophone in the closet. If
they found it anywhere it was put away and in the closet.

As you can probably guess, I'm really pissed and feel like making their heads role across the bandroom-floor. I just needed a place to vent...

Give the trombonists the cookies to empty their spit valves down the back of the Alto Sax sections' shirts.

I have to ask; did you even read it? because that is a relatively stupid comment (coming from "GTP's Most Knowledgable...")

Fair enough. I agree with you on the fatc that you shouldn't give in adn they should learn to respect you. Although unless you've had a hard day (which from the sounds of things, like you have) it does sound maybe you got a little too wound up. Like you in your position would be angry at the fact that they are playing around with an expensive instrument, I know what it's like, albeit they probably would look after yuor instrumetn as they have ones of their own and just go with the joke, but not give in. Or that's what I would do. Best remedy IMO as childish as it is, gte your own back somehow. Something embarrising.

Now my turn to rant :D .
A couple of days ago my band put it's name down fro an upcomming gig at my colledge. Called bandnight, loads of rockbands play from the school. Anywayz the majority of the memebrs in my band - the basist, the singer, and the rythm guitarist are already in bands, which have played in band night before.
Anywayz so I put our band name down first and so did tones of other bands. In fact 24 and they can only allow 10 bands in. A good chunk of the 20 odd bands, are bands made up of members from fellow other bands (if that makes sense). I don't mind that, but when there's a guitarist (just fro example, who I know and are freinds with) who decides to be in three of the bands going for band night along with many other muscians who are playing in lots of cobo bands, they've now said that they're not taking bands which have members which are in other groups. So just because of the selfish few that seem to want to be in every band there it's prevented the lot of us who really want to do it and are say just in 2 or less bands. This has REALLY fumed me as I really wanted to play and means I have to wait to next year now! And still I may not get in for some gay reason!!!:irked:

Edit: spelling is appaling and I can't be arsed to edit it and I'm in a rush!:p

Do what the professionals do when they get something held against them for ransom; Walk up in there when they're all there one day, and start beating the everloving piss out of anyone who you think is even remotely involved with the ransom-ing act.

Granted, you'll get in trouble, but do you think they'll be taking stuff from you again?

Obviously you're not doing your job correctly if they don't respect you. Stop whining about it, nobody cares.

How is it stupid? It makes perfect sense. Give the trombonists the cookies to mess with the people holding your instrument ransom or whatever. Duh.

Hey, I'm not respected, I do my job the right way, but they still don't respect me. Don't you EVER blame me for their acts of organized stupidity, because I can't control what they do when I'm not there... (and obviously, if no-one cared, there would be no posts...)

Also, wee_man, it's a $3,000.00 instrument, I'm not just going to let it fly (the fact that I had to save up for a year to buy it is what has me mad). I'm not going to go along with it, and I am going to yell at the band director tomorrow for allowing this stuff to go on...

Umm, the Alto saxes wouldn't steal my instrument because A. they're not in the class that stole it, and B. I could force them to do 500 pushups a piece for taking it and make them continue until they tell me where it is...

Why not make a real joke out of it, and go to a laywer.. Now wouldn't you love to see the faces on the guys when they get a court appearance letter... That would be wonderful...
Lost property should be returned to the nearest police station, and if not collected within a set amount of time may be returned to the findee.. You may offer a reward for said lost property, but they are using 'extortion' to get stuff from you, so why not have fun... Hang on... Just realised that maybe these sort of laws don't apply to you... Better shut my mouth before I get in trouble...

I hate people that complain.

I agree with SublimeDood, but if I were to expand on that, you'd whinge ***** and moan to the mods now wouldn't you?

I'd just beat the hell out of them if they didn't give me my 3 thousand dollar instrument. It's a simple solution, I think. If you let people walk all over you like a little girl, they'll just continue to do it. And I'll laugh.

I must say that you really are either retarded, blind, or are illiterate because if you see the word "rant" in the topic of a thread, it generally means someone's complaining about something. So, if you can't stand my "constant whining" (which I don't know how you'd get because whining implies a tone of voice; which is something unobtainable over the net), then either A. Ignore me, B. get a real life and leave us alone.

(BTW, you're just as guilty as complaining as I am; so I wouldn't be talking).

Oh yeah, and for the rest of the people here I thought I'd give you an update (would have given it earlier but I was busy). My dad called up the band instructor and started a nice little chat with him. It turns out that the band instructor had my instrument in his office the whole entire time; he just told me the litle story to "teach me a lesson". For a first-time offense, I would have much rather been scolded. Thanks God he's retiring in a couple years...

You're such a crackup, so I'm not even going to explain what I meant.

Care to show me where I'm guilty of complaining? I can think of one thread, one thread alone.

But I will say that I know that you are American, so I'll give you that, but you must realise that there are other countries in the world, and they each have their own sayings.

Look you've been done, good and proper. Ok you can say it's a bit over the top because of the cost of your sax but this is a standard prank and you've been done. It doesn't matter if you've been "set up" or not in your position its the public perception that matters right now.

Take it on the chin, walk in head high with a bunch of cookies (and you can get a everything included, just add milk, stick in oven, pack in every local supermarket) either that or go buy the damn things ready made stick em in a bag and shake 'em a bit so they look home made.

If you start throwing your weight around all the guys in the band are going to think you're a bit of a prat to be honest. On the grander scale this doesn't even rate a blip.

Once it's all calmed down in a week or two request a meeting of your peers and request that this type of thing be ended.

(oh and make sure you steralise the mouthpiece when you get it back..... "this one time at band camp"......"i just stuck a trumpet up your ass" !!!!!)

Jpec, I'm wondering why you didn't take advantage of this opportunity.

Show up tomorrow with an excellent batch of Ex-lax laced brownies. They pulled a prank on you, why not return in kind. It won't cause them ever lasting harm, but it's the right amount of payback. You get to accept defeat graciously, and parlay it into a stunning victory.

The key to pulling it all off, is let them think that they did indeed put one over on you. Suck up the humility and bake them the brownies. They'll be excited about knocking you down, and it'll be too late for them to realize they've walked right into your prank.

Good luck,

Till later,

AO

 Haha...so I guess he got you.

Funny stuff.

Just shatter their back windows. (if they have cars)

Don't mess.

I find it just sligthtly amusing that the moderators didn't even read all the posts. I mean, it was just something the Band Instructor did to try and teach me a lesson, he's got it in his office. BTW, the Ex-Lax idea had come to mind, but i didn't have the ingredients for cookies/brownies, and I think my mom would get kinda suspicious if I went to GNC and got a bottle of laxtives...

So what you're saying is that you left it out, and the band instructor picked it up and put it in his office? and the Period 2 players had nothing to do with it? SO the Band instructor was misleading you all the time? I'd bake the brownies for him instead. And you can pick up laxatives at the grocery store, just a few isles up from the Brownie mix. ;)

I did read the post, but mis-interpreted it. I simply took it as "The period 2 class found it, and handed it over to the teacher. They then wanted him to hold while they waited for the ransom"

IMO, the band instructor was irresponsible and took the unnecessary risk of driving you to retaliation(against innocent bystanders at that).
What if you had gone "Columbine" on them?
Potentially tragic.
Even a lesser form of retaliation could have escalated.
You "frag" the 2nd period, the 2nd period doesn't know why, they retaliate and so on.
He should've been honest with you.
Needless manipulation and a poor example of teaching.

I hope that you have your sax and no one died.
