I have read all the threads about the lacking AI that is in the GT series. And I agree with all of the deficiencies.

That being said I wanted to comment on the progress of the GT series. Last night my wife was using the PS2 to for a video she wanted to watch so I drug out the PS1 and stuck GT2 in.

I started a fresh game and within a couple hours I had all the licenses. Then I sought after my first car - Toyota Supra Turbo - $4,000 approx and turbo 1 and weight reduction - total spent $9,940.

Now to the story. I enter the sunday cup and win the first 2 races fairly easily but the AI was always on my tail. It was the Midfield track that got my attention.

I was doing everything I could to build a nice gap - lawn mowing, cutting the ai off, spinning them out and all to no avail. They would immediately zoom right up to me after they recovered from whatever dirty deed I did. I wiped out in the final corner and was able to lose by 1.5 seconds.

This prompted another race - but this time I intentionally stayed in last place just behind the 5th car. Raced again and one by 0.332 seconds. The interesting part was that total time in race where I let the AI win and the race where I pushed to win were over 30 seconds different!

At least the AI in GT4 does not use a magical trick to make the race competitive. We can count on the cars to produce consistent lap times for the most part. GT4 has advanced the AI, sometimes we just need to see where we were before to see that we are better off now.

It happened in GT3 too - and this was exploited in my "Worst Car Wins" series.

Ah, I don´t know. At least rubber band AI provides some fun while racing. I´m not saying they should use it on GT4, but sometimes it really sucks to play it.

Like yesterday, I was doing some Rally races. On the Capri reverse track I colided with the AI car on that first turn. But while I moved on, the AI stood on that turn, hitting the wall back and forward for the rest of the race. :indiff:

You've brought back memories of the short time I spent playing my brother's GT2. I found it cool having all these road cars to race but found the catchup function on the AI irritating, as was the fact that the AI always had a car that could match the pace of whatever I was driving, more or less, so there seemed little point in making a car faster. At that time I did not see what all the fuss was about with the series, though GT3 changed that for me :) :) :)

One thing I remember in GT3 was entering one of the beginner races which was 2 laps of midfield, in the F1 car. I wanted to lap all the competitors in my two laps, in other wordsdo 2 laps in the time it took for them to do 1. I did not quite manage it, but the elapsed race time made me suspicious. So I tried again, but this time I sat on the grid while the rest ofthe field completed a lap. I let them all pass me, starting their second lap, and then I pulled away. This time I did finish my two laps before they managed 1, and won the race. My lap time showed that it was not me being faster, it was them going slower.

So I agree. It's better than it was.

But it's still rubbish :D

I used to hate the Amateur series in GT3. You would be up by 2 seconds and the AI would pit and you would be up 22 seconds or so. Then you could watch the AI catch up the 20 seconds in half a lap, only to slow down and stay 2 seconds behind again. At least GT4 doesn't do that! For all its failings I like GT4's AI much better. I just wish they put more randomizing in. They are too predictable.

I hate rubberbanding. I enjoy fine-tuning my car's build to carefully match the AI, so i can decide how much of a margin and how hard I want to fight for it. But trying to hit a target that moves with you makes it very difficult to get nice, tight, exciting margins.

my main gripe with b-spec is that it seems it doesn't get on the gas when it's behind another car or attempt to pass when it can, like it's timid or something even tho you have it on push/overtake. only other gripe is that if it happens to run off the track it does it in the same spot every time. but oh well, it saves me a lot of time n effort in winning the easier races for me.
