Just so you all know, the message going around that reads something like this:
Because of our overloading of our servers, we are being forced to extract our non-active AIM users. Because this is a free service, AOL has exceeded the budget for the AIM service. We are asking that you send this exact message to 20 other AIM users to ensure us that you're an active AIM user. Our system tracking devise will pick up this message to keep you on our active list. You have 72 hours to complete this task or your service will be cancelled immediately. Starting January 1, 2005, we will be charging a small fee for registering of a screen name for AIM. Thank you for your time and for using AOL or AIM.
IS A HOAX.

Just from a quick read you can tell this.
1) "Because of our overloading of our servers..." Any memo from any corporation would be grammatically correct. This memo already starts bad. It should be "Because of (or Due to) the overload on our servers..."
2) If their servers were overloaded, why would they be asking you to spam people incessantly?
3) Why would they even require you to send an IM when they can tell how many active users are online at any given moment?

This goes around just about every year and every year I get it from more and more people, who are scared to death about their aim service being retracted. Just in the past ten minutes, five people have sent me either that exact message or a variant of it and I decided to inform all of the users of this site that this is a hoax and should be treated as such.

If you already knew this was a hoax, good. Thank you for not spamming everyone you know with this, as it will surely save some headaches somewhere.

If not, stop spamming your friends! :dunce:

I posted this in the off topic forum instead of the computer forum because I figured more people read this forum than the former.

Anything that says "Send this to X amount of people" is fake.

I usually block anyone that IMs me with stupid crap like that.

I'll never fall for anything so lame, not in a million years.

What's this? "Free premium membership to GTP forums if you register today"

demon of speed
