So, I've been doing a lot of custom races dues to the change in weekly racing. The major drawback of this is of course the horrible AI driving. I tried an endurance race at Bathurst (Mount Panorama) and they are just awful. The random brake slamming and horrifically slow speeds at the top of the hill is enough to drive you crazy.

This brings me on to my question. Has anyone found a track where the AI are not just absolute garbage and can actually pose a threat?

Now I'm not looking for ovals because I'm not replacing my daily races with an egg, that's just a big no no.

I've mainly done Custom Races since buying the game in June. I think they are universally bad on all the tracks I've raced tried to avoid them at, but they only seem faster on certain tracks if the tracks themselves are faster i.ie having more straights (like Big Willow for example).

Best way in Custom mode is to nerf your car in a One Make Race. Never tune it! The AI is very slow around corners, so go down one tyre compound & add maximum weight too. This will slow you down around corners to help minimise the problem, although it won't anywhere near get rid of it. Then use a power nerf to balance it out further; on faster tracks use less nerfing, & on slower tracks use more. I've had a little bit of fun doing this these past few weeks.

Interesting question, because I do recall that they behave inconsistently from track to track...not much personal experience here, so I'm also curious.

However, I have noticed the AI's braking and exits do smooth out (not completely) when you raise the difficulty to professional. I normally use a GR4 car vs GR3 for AI.

I'm always going to use Professional as I don't see any threat in the AI at any level so setting it higher would make sense!

I agree. This is an absolute must in a Custom Race, as is turning off Slow Car Boost, setting Grip & Slipstream to Real. It helps to turn all penalties off too, because they'll only end up giving you one because of their poor programming. Try ABS on Weak or Off for an added challenge (as well as no other driver aids at all), TC off can make grid starts more interesting

Interlagos quick race is the only time I have to work to win against the AI. But that's mostly down to the fact it's a short lap with very few overtaking places.

Although it gives you a payout pre race, if you nerf your car, do you get a bigger payout? (excluding clean race bonus)

I don't think so, I just do it to try & even out some of the problems with the AI. However, if you take a car into a race above it's class it does give a higher payout. You can also turn the power up & weight down if the car is too slow, which is another way to balance out the player vs AI problem.

They are pretty crap everywhere, but maybe the tri-oval track since there's always that one car that suddenly gains 100hp towards the end of the race.

I've just start a Nordschleife 1 lap race and they seem better so far! whether or not that keeps up through the rest of the lap is yet to be seen but I'm at the Karussel and they are holding it down!.

They are weird at the Nord. Sometimes they will indicate, pull over, & let you pass as if it's a track day. They can't seem to make their mind up if they want to race or not!

I was literally about to post a vid to my youtube through share factory!!! Why on earth are they indicating out my way

The least slow CORNERS, the better the "AI".

St. CROIX any variation.
- Even with those right anglev corners, the AI are fast enough. If advise slowing to use the recommended gear at those corners. It keeps you from being too fast and llows the AI to keep pace on exit.
Pick the racing line where it does less to slow the AI, they'll adjust to carry speed to overtake you.

Le Mans.
- They'll be fast in Gr. 4. Only thing is, the French cars are always up front.
- the real bad is, in Gr. 3. If the BMW's are out front, one will spin out after Indianapolis. All the time.

Nurb 24.
-they signal for you to pass.

Brands Hatch
- I've found AI are decent

DTG
- competent AI, UNTIL the middle esses and the Four brothers right handers

Monza
- easy for the AI to do what they do, moving slalom

I had an idea, some day I should go to every track in the game on Gr.3 and see how long it takes me to overtake the AI by number of laps. I typically do 3 lap Gr.3 races for Custom Race with full car counts and AI on professional.

I’m by no means an alien but it would be interesting if the number of laps it takes to overtake the leading M6 correlates to AI competitiveness on that specific track?

The way I see it is that if you're in a half way competitive car and you drive well and dont make mistakes, you'll rock it in.

I've driven say the Group C cars in obviously the Group 1 races and you'll win if you're consistently above average.

If you're like me and you drive and daydream and chuck burnouts and drift then you need a current age LMP1 car just to make up for your bad driving.

Yeah, AI is on the easy side. It's a shame.

One "hack" is to lower HP and gain weight. Adjust it so you are slightly slower on the straights. That way you're forced to follow. Wait for cars in front to mess up. Just like Sports Mode. :D

The most annoying thing for me regarding AI is how they are haphazardly mixed in road class races, including custom races. It looks really out of place to have eg. detuned N600 AI cars in an N400 race (the opposite would be a bit more tolerable but still unnecessary). If the number of cars in a class can't fill out a full grid I'd rather have repeats.
Well, this and how there's very little variation in finishing positions between races.

Been driving the 96 Evo tonight, & had an absolute blast! Custom Race, one make, no tuning, fully nerfed (power/weight/tyres), cockpit view, no HUD, damage heavy, no fantasy penalties, & starting from P last. I managed to get to P1 after a 10 minute race on Brands Hatch, & also on the Nord after several tries. I actually got some competition out of the AI for once this evening!

:)

PD are scared that, if the AI weren't terrible, come the new game, many wouldn't automatically buy it when the servers shut down. 💡

I took a long vacation from GTS lately. Just played PC2 and a bit of AC. Came back to GTS a few days ago. First time with the new tire model. Drove the new track in Arcade before I had done the track experience. Spotted the AI (on Professional) two tire grades. No tuning, no TCS, no ABS. Easily beat them not even knowing the track.

Yes, they are that bad... (I'm not that good!)

The new tire model (comforts and sports, at least) seems quite an improvement. But still nowhere near as real as PC2 and AC, IMO. And without a decent AI, this game kind of bores me. I'll be back for the next big physics/tire update, or if a few more real tracks appear, but so far, the eye candy just doesn't make for a good race. But when PC3 comes out, I won't be forced into buying it, because the PC2 AI can be turned up enough. I will be able to wait and see if the buglist is any smaller, LOL

That's part of the problem right there, Arcade mode, Slow Car Boost is on (as is rubber banding I think). Try this; Custom Race, turn Slow Car Boost Off, AI on Pro, all settings as realistic as possible (no fantasy penalties & damage on heavy etc). Use the Evo 96 stock in a One Make Race on The Nord (1 lap at Twilight). Drop 1 tyre compound, add maximum weight, & nerf the BHP all the way down. Start from 20th, & see if you can get P1 by the end of the lap. It actually took me several goes to do it. I remember you being a similar speed to me in the GT5 Shuffle & Spec scene, maybe slightly faster, so this might give you a similar challenge.

I ran several custom races early in the life of GTS, and I am considering returning soon. The AI are always bad, but interesting races can be found in running N cars against Gr4, Gr3. Start in the back with no boost or other incentives. Short races can even make you perfect you braking and power out of turns to make up the time quickly enough to catch the dullards before the end. If you are still winning to easily -- detune your N car and have a go.

Well, I just finished 2nd, twice, at St. Croix-C II. Arcade race, Gr. 4, using the Atenza. I did take it easy in the sharper turns and shifted at redline(not over revving), but the AI were quick.

Yes in the tightly controlled classes like GT4/GT3 then the AI does have a fighting chance.

i've used the Mazda 6 GT3 and its tough going in its class just because its a 2.5 turbo four in a class where its supercars and whatnot.

However if you know the track and dont make mistakes you can win but you're on your toes.

Something like St. Croix is harder because the long straights and fairly highly speed coners favours high power cars.

If I take my Level 3 power/weight reduction Ferrari 458 GT3 then its curtains for the AI but that's an unfair advantage.

The JGTC class Group 2 is the same way.... had some big time nail biting battles here.
