World came crashing down around me.:ouch:

Thanks mate....:)

Sure mate ....I hope you don't have to do the same for me in the near future.

My PS3 is playing up also and its a launch date 60gb version, my issue is it only reads my game discs like GT5P and CODwaw every so often! about 3 in 10 attempts will read  I have run a laser cleaner discs ( the ones with the small brushes on it ) through it many times over the last few days and still it only reads the game disc when it feels like it and sometimes doesn't even notice the cleaning disc :(

I used to maintain the slimline and chunky PS2's in my house by opening them up and manually cleaning the laser and reflective lens below it with cotton buds etc .. but I'm not sure I want to take a PS3 apart incase there's a small chance I will mess up any chance of a replacement if a manual clean doesn't work and the seal being broken is an issue for Sony?

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated as I can see this problem get worse as the days go by :ouch:

I don't think it's the laser, sometimes small handprints on the disc causes the problem, I've had your problem before, just clean the disc and get rid of any prints and hopefully it should work.

Good on ya Stavingo for your advice to another GTPlanet member in grief over the loss or potential loss of our beloved PS3's :). Once again the Support that is given by other members is fantastic and should be applauded.

Thanks to all that have posted here with suggestions and moral support....Cheers guyz...👍

Hang on !! this is not my 'Thread'....hahaha

Personally I would never recommend the use of cleaning discs, many do nothing and a few are more than capable of causing damage.

The lens and carrier on a CD/DVD/BR drive is not designed to have brushes slap against it at high speed, so you run the risk of possible alignment issues as well as the danger of any crap on the brushes transferring to the lens its meant to be cleaning.

A far better practice is to ensure that every disc you put into a player is spotless and that the player is operating in a dust and smoke free environment as much as you can (i.e. make sure you dust it regularly).

In regard to your PS3 it may well be worth looking at the Continuous Play scheme that Sony run in the UK, I have it for mine and it covers you against all breakdowns and accidental damage for £5 a month. Two day doorstep turn-around as well, give it a google.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions guys 👍 tonight after it would not read any disc whatsoever through a good 30 minutes of trying I decided to jump in at the deep end and took the PS3 apart :p .. there was so much dust and dirt inside this thing it was crazy  anyway cleaned it all out thoroughly and then dismantled the blue ray tray and carefully cleaned the lens and voila I have a PS3 loading discs in an instant every time :) I was defo hesitant to open it at first but now I have popped my cherry on PS3 cleaning I feel more relaxed and confident and wont hesitate to do it again if the missus or a family members console starts acting up in the future :)

Thanks again guys

So 3 weeks ago my PS3 went YLOD, I have Gamecare so I phoned them up and it was sent off and repaired.

Lo and behold today it is dead once more, I think they may have botched the repair. Anyway same story its being sent off. Am a bit pissed off though as I was really looking forward to battlefield 1943!

Hmmm I did Zone Zeus on Wipeout HD maybe that killed it!
