Alfa 169 renderings... DO WANT

Alfa is back to what it does best! These are the most accurate renderings yet of Alfa's all-new flagship saloon, the 169. And the long-awaited replacement for the unsuccessful 166 is taking on the Germans the the only way Alfa knows how, with stunning design.

The 169 heralds a new styling direction for the firm. While the grill is still very much part of the Alfa family, the rear end is all-new while the overall exterior will take inspiration from the new crop of four-door coupes such as the Mercedes CLS and Audi A5 Sportback. There's even a hint of the elegant Maserati Quattroporte in its flowing profile.

Pitched as a direct 5-series rival, top-end models could even take on the likes of the larger Jaguar XJ. But in order to compete with the established players, Alfa has taken the decision to make the 169 rear wheel drive - ensuring a more dynamic driving expereince. To achieve this Alfa could borrow the next Chrysler 300C platform - which in itself is a slightly shortened version of the Quattroporte's underpinnings - a perfect example of how the Chrysler-Fiat tie-up will save both companies piles of cash, by stretching their resources across a number of brands.

Engine choices are still unconfirmed, but likely to include all-new petrol and diesel V6's. There are even rumours that the 450bhp 4.7-litre V8 from the 8C Competizione supercar could find its way into a range-topping GTA variant, designed to give the BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 AMG something to think about.

Originally previewed by the Visconti concept at the Geneva motor show way back in 2004, the 169 was earmarked for a 2009 debut. But due to the economic crisis it's been repeatedly delayed, and now an on-sale date sometime in late 2011 seems feasible - although we can look forward to another gorgeous concept previeweing the 169 breaking cover at a major motor show next year.

Interesting bits highlighted in bold... Alfa making a big, RWD, possibly V8 and absolutely beautiful saloon? Yes please.

The styling? IMO, there are hints of Jag XF, Maserati Quattroporte and Tesla Model S in there. Works brilliantly with the traditional Alfa front end. I know it's only a render, but if it ends up like that I'll be very happy indeed.

Looks nice, but it seems the illustrators have just put an Alfa grill on to an XF...

Loving the new designs coming out of the Alfa and Jaguar design departments. Regardless of their similarity, they are producing some of the most beautiful cars ever at present. Anyone want to 'chop a nice red GTA version with this rendering? :D

I was just about to ask, is that a Jaguar with Alfa badges and grille pasted on? But I was tree'd as it were.:sly:

I'm all for V8 sports sedans, and an Alfa Romeo one would be sweet.:D This'd also underpin the next 300C right?

I see more design heritage from the 150's and 160 than I do anything else...except a little Bangle-ing. and Ida said it's an Aston with an alpha nose pasted on it :P

Hmmm.... look s nice, but there are a few bits that make this look like the usual Auto Express rubbish to me.

Looking at the length of the front overhang this would have to be RWD, and where are Alfa going to get a RWD platform from to build it on?

The rear is way to short... looks nice, but not practical enough to make production as it would result in a tiny luggage capacity and a letterbox opening as access.

Some lovey styling bits on it though... particularly the lines around the wing/wheel arch from the front 3/4is view.

It's coming from Chrysler, the 300C is rear drive.

I like it but it's still just a rendering. I'll reserve judgment until the thing is actually unveiled.

D'oh, just saw the highlighted section in HFS's original post.. RWD it is then :D

Which will, as the article points out, be based on the Quattroporte platform ;)

So really, if it does at some point get the V8 Maserati/Ferrari engine, it will be like a SWB Quattroporte 👍

DO WANT!! Now that is a beautiful car, and it makes everything else its competing with look like junk.

I did get that impression (especially with the colour being so similar to the Jaguar) but if you compare the render with the Jag there are quite a few differences, even if the proportions are similar.

Basically, I'm under no illusion that it's what the finished car will actually look like, but we can hope...

Thanks for separating the threads 👍 I wasn't sure whether it was worth it's own thread.

needs less ugly and more Alfa Romeo. that car has as much passion in it as a trout. Look at 159, Brera.. those are Alfa Romeos. this 169 render is more generic than latest maxima/camry etc.. also, why do the center caps of the wheels still have Jaguar emblem ( kittycats head ) on them? faaaaiiiillll...

I think its a pretty gorgeous design. The 4.7 from the Competizione would go hand in hand with its exotic looks. Nice presentation hfs, "do want".

I am so glad that its rear wheel drive. I had never been interested in the newer alfas but the older ones were very nice, guila sprint speciale anyone? (may of spelt guila wrong). I just don't think you can put passion and front wheel drive in the same sentence.
