Alfa Romeo has been around for over a century, and in that time, it's produced some of the greatest race cars the world has ever seen. Many will point to Alfa's pre-war era as a high watermark, but even into the 1980s, it built some incredible machines. Take, for example, this 75 Turbo Evoluzione IMSA, which will cross the auction block Friday at RM Sotheby's Duemila Ruote Auction.

This is a factory-built racer based on the rear-wheel-drive 75 sedan, which came to the U.S. as the Milano. Essentially, the 75 Turbo Evoluzione the Italian equivalent to an E30 M3, and while this Alfa never enjoyed the success of its BMW counterpart, it's still a cool piece of touring car history.

Instead of using the 75's V6, Alfa decided to turbocharge its venerable twin-cam inline-four to produce around 400HP in Evoluzione form. Alfa made 500 road-going examples of the 75 Evoluzione for homologation which have since become collector's items.

Unfortunately, a competition history for this particular car hasn't been provided, but a badge bolted to the chassis proves this car was prepared by Alfa's in-house race team, Alfa Corse. RM Sotheby's estimates the 75 Turbo Evo will sell for around $120,000 which is a steal compared to a BMW M3 E30 Sport Evolution Group A.
