I believe music to be a universal language so that if we could listen to music from alien civilizations we would still recognize it as music. There would be a regular rhythm and harmony like power and major chords must have been discovered and adopted time and time again from such civilizations. This leads us to melodies which would as well be close to ours since melodies arise from harmony after all. Even if their brains would be very fast processors, unlike ours that are slow to a few dozen cycles per second (the power of our brains comes from being massively parallel), there would probably still be appreciation for slow music. If not, we could always slow down their drone-like music to our level of understanding.
There is a close relationship between the psychology of music and the science behind it. Cultural conditioning plays a smaller part than acoustical (vibrational) laws, discovered empirically throughout ages and territories. These laws seem to be, without a reasonable doubt, universal so that we may expect a civilization orbiting Alpha Centauri to have music eerily close to ours.
So, do you think alien doorbells and public buzzers sing Mi-Do?
