Everything's broked... :(

A while ago I got a new motherboard - an Asus A7V8X-X. When I'd finished screwing it in place and nailing everything to it, I turned it on and... the fans flitted back and forth, the power light flickered, the case lights flickered... So, I figured that my old 300W power supply wasn't up to the task (something confirmed by the IT bod at work). I put the old board (a "We have no name" A6DP) back in place and carried on as normal.

I got the new 550W power supply, fitted it and forgot about it.

Then this weekend arrived. "Right" (I thought). So I screwed the bugger in, flicked the switch and the power-on light came on.... Progress! Pushed the big button and... case lights came on, fans came on, things started working... Then I started getting a permanent loop of half-second beeps, punctuated by half second pauses. Bollocks. Nothing I did made any difference at all.

So I pulled it out - with the intent of asking the bods here - and put the old one back in. And... oh crap. Lights on, IDE drives flickering then as soon as the HD span up the lights went off, the fans went off and the machine emitted a two tone - looped - bleep. Crappity crap.

I unplugged everything and made sure I plugged it back in the order I'd noted when I first took it all apart. And it sort of worked. Now it's getting as far as the point I'd usually expect to see a Windows XP loading icon, but nothing appears on screen...

So:
Any suggestions for how to fix the machine as it stands now?
Any ideas for how to fix the problem with the new board?

Everything is compatible with everything else. It just don't work (and the troubleshooting guide makes no mention of beeping noises and likely faults).

Suckage. I'm dealing with two busted computers currently as well. Oh, they're personal computers - the computers at work are always busted (:

Oh I just had a fun thought, Famine. For your avatar you could put some text in there with an arrow pointing to the start/finish that says "I am here. In 6.5 minutes I will be here again." or however long it takes you to lap the the course.

I'm using the work laptop wired into my router right now. Les suckages massifs.

Hmm .. I would think this is something wrong with the boot sector of windows, but I'm not sure.

Are you able to get into the BIOS? If so try booting from the CD-ROM with an XP disc in and see if you can save/reformat or something. I'm not sure what else to say.

I can get into the BIOS (although I have NO clue what I'm looking at). Given that my house is in a state of "everything in one place" due to "decorating", finding my XP disc is a non-starter.

Know anyone else that has XP? If so, after you've talked them into letting you borrow their disc, go into the BIOS and just fumble around until you see something talking about the boot order and move the "CD-ROM" or "Removable Devices" option up to the top of the list, then save and exit with the disc in the drive. BIOSes are motherboard specific so I can't really give you much more help than that.

Fiddle around with the FSB and Multiplier settings. Set them to whatever is the reccomended amount for your processor. If that doesn't work, try setting them a bit lower. It may be something borked on the mobo or it's bios

Dude, your avatar is freaking me out, emad.

You should be happy you weren't around me for the past week and a half then. My right eye has been almost every shade of red under the sun (including a strange pinkish-purple shade) and Visine feels like sandpaper after a few minutes. It's damn scary. I'll be seeing the doc monday morning. :P

XP wont work with different motherboards IIRC. ive tried it on 3, and ive had to reinstall each time for it to work. as for the beeps, he got it^

Second !...

Weee.. Back from soccer I guess...

XP not working on different MoBos isn't an issue - I'm using my original MoBo...

Well, according to the link provided by Shannon, that beep code with the old mobo means that something isn't right with your CPU, it might be damaged, or it just isn't in there properly. Overheating CPU might be an issue, too.

Thats the LAST thing you do - right on the BIOS menu is should give you the option to LOAD DEFAULT SETTINGS ( or OPTIMISED ) and they are the base settings you use because they are safe. If you dont know about the FSB speeds you can easily kill the new mobo when its unnessisary

Back to the problem, heres a tip, try and put a delay on your hard drive for spin up, it might be that your PSU has one big hit of power when you 1st boot up that a delay on your hard drive will make it easyer on your PSU. Also, make sure that your mobo is compatable with all your other hardware on the mobo makers site, it could be something like that.

It passes its status check just fine... The computer just hangs when it reaches the point you'd expect to see the Windows XP loading screen and you see naught but blankness. Teh suck.

It's all working now.

I lost my temper and removed everything. I then put it together and threatened it with a biro, a spoon and a length of flex I had to hand and, hey presto, it magically magicked itself together.

Hooray for me!

threatening computers is fun kids :dunce:

Indeed. The best two tools for fixing computers are:
1. Being able to shout "Work, you ****er"
2. Being able to threaten it with non-use. Computers only break when you need them, so you have to play the reverse psychologist with them.

Is that everything with all the new gizmos etc. working? If so that was lucky.

Yes. All new. All sparkly.

Don't know if it's psychosomatic, but there's definitely an improvement in performance just from the MoBo. Of course the video performance has shot up, thanks to the new board actually supporting the AGP8x that my card is...

this is actually a regular occurence for me. taking things apart and putting them back together seems to make them better, who knows how. maybe its the whole put together by hand thing, rather than a machine (altho PC's are put together by hand anyway:dunce: ) maybe you fixed a dodgy connection 💡

I think it was a glitch in the Matrix, personally.

I mean, I threatened it with a biro, a spoon and a length of electrical flex. However, the thought occurred that I shouldn't have a spoon in the computer room at all. Then, when I was tidying up, I couldn't find it any more. So where did it come from and where did it go? Perhaps...

There WAS no spoon...

you fixed the computer with your mind. you are the chosen one.

hahaha. that, or maybe your frustration created a disturbance in the force which then checked your computer right into working order.

for future reference, robotussin cures everything.

 I love that Fax machine scene in Office Space! :grumpy: anyone got a sledge hammer? :irked:
