All energy the same?

I was just thinking, is all energy basicly the same?

Electricity: Electrons moving from place to place.

Heat: Atoms moving back and forth(vibrating).

Light: Photons moving from place to place.

Movement: stuff moving:dunce:

Is all energy basically stuff moving? It is an interesting thought, but it popped into my head, so I wanted to post it. What do you guys think?

Hmmm ... good question that. I just asked myself: can there be energy without movement? Then, it popped into my head - yes, there can be: potential energy. Like when you put a ball on top of a hill. The energy that makes it want to roll down when you let it go is there as long as you hold it, so there can be energy without movement. Well, it's still there when you let it go, but then, it is transformed into kinetic energy: movement.

There's no such thing as potential energy without the kinetic energy to justify it.

Energy is mass moving at the speed of light squared. Word to your mother.
 
Okay, considering Einstein, if there is no movement, there's no energy. But what exactly does your first sentence mean? :dunce:
 
If the universe was devoid of all energy, then saying that there is still potential energy in the universe would be wrong. Potential Energy is only justified through kinetic energy.
 
Well, potential energy is energy waiting to be transformed to kinetic energy if you will. But it's still a form of energy. If kinetic energy wouldn't exist, neither would potential energy, but that doesn't mean that potential energy is not an energy, does it?

And how about voltage, as in electrons wanting to move from one place to another? No energy?

Right, that's what I was saying about potential and kinetic.

All potentials for anything are the same way. Potentiality is strictly conditional. There's no such thing as potential when what defines it has never existed or is not defined itself. But, that occurance would be impossible, because everything we recognize is given a definition.

...that being said, let's wait till Famine arrives. :lol:
 
Energy is the amount of work needed to bring a system from one state to another. The very definition of work is force applied over a distance – that implies movement of some sort.

Energy can be the amount of work needed to bring a system from one state to another, but it also can be the force trying to move a mass of some sort to another place. There's no movement in that mass, but still, it contains energy.

Gravity is a good example by the way. In which way is gravity related to movement?

Gravity exhibits potential energy, which is the work done against something. For example, for a ball to be on top of a hill, you had to do work to get it to the top of the hill in the first place – that work (the work of moving it up) is then stored as potential energy, which is the energy required to counteract the force of gravity. Potential energy can only exist if you move from one area to another within a reference frame.

Just look at the formula for gravitational potential energy: U = mgh, where h is the height from a reference point, implying that the object had to be moved up to said height.
 
Sounds to me like the whole potential => kinetic thing is a cycle that has no end. In order to have potential energy you must have had kinetic energy working at some point in order to create a situation where energy could be stored for later use, whcih is potential energy. In order to have the kinetic energy that later creates potential energy, that potential energy must be utilized, or else there would be no energy.

You can't have one without the other. You can't define potential energy unless you can show that there really is energy there by turning that potential into kinetic. Likewise, kinetic energy doens't make sense unless you can prove a source--it had to come from somewhere, right? It came from potential energy, which came from kinetic energy...
 
Yes, you can't abolish energy. It can only be transformed into another kind of energy.

However, I totally agree that we need to have some kinetic energy first to get some potential energy. As the question was: "is all energy basically stuff moving?", we have to say 'no' in my eyes, cause a mass containing potential energy does not need to move to have it. Yes, it must have been moved where it is to gain the potential energy in the first place, but there is a moment when it doesn't move anymore, and it still contains energy.

So, how exactly do proton torpedoes work? I mean, if they're just made of protons, then all they should do is crash into something all neutral-like without an explosion and crap. Especially if they're supposed to work in space. What's up with that, man? I mean, I think at least it would've traveled down the exhaust port only to dink into the death star's core and come floating back in the other direction with a giant dent on the nosecone.
 
Potential Energy is a misnomer... it's not energy per se... but potential, period. Like Omnis was trying to explain, it's impossible to talk about Potential Energy without the Kinetic portion. It's merely a matter of semantics. We label this Potential as Energy, but it's merely the potential for energy to be released, not energy itself.

As to the original question, yes, all kinds of energy involve the movement of a carrier particle for that kind of energy.

Actually, everything is a form of energy...
