I Renown I
So, I haven't been to the dentist since I was say.... 7 or 8 because of a bad experience that I can't even remember anymore, anyway, my left gum (where my wisdom tooth would be) has been aching for two days now and is the result of me trying to get some leftover meat from out of said gum. Now it's a bit swollen but the pain subsides and then comes right back again. It was annoying some fifteen minutes and now, even though it's still aching, isn't anywhere near what it was not too long ago. I'm going to set up an appointment tomorrow, er, later on today to see if the problem is something more than just to be on the safe side.

In any case, any temporary remedies you folks can suggest to get me through the rest of the day? I can eat, I can talk, drink, etc, etc....nothing is really bordering on extremely uncomfortable but I'd like to alleviate the problem before it (possibly) worsens. It could even be my inner cheek as every time I pull it outward the aching minimizes substantially.
I'm mostly trying to keep a clear head and not jump to the absolute worse-case scenario like my dumb ass folks seem to be doing; I get it's (possibly) serious....but I doubt I'm going to die from this. :grumpy:

Discuss.

Stop touching it! Not even with your tounge. I haven't been to a dentist in 28 years. Just leave it alone and you'll be fine tomorrow or the next day.

Suck on an ice cube to numb the pain? Dunno, I actually go to the dentist so na-na!

I just diagnosed myself some Anbesol. :p

So, like me, you don't think it's anything serious at all?

No ice. Anbesol!

And what painting? What are you talking about?
Your thread topic "allow me to paint a picture" so yeah where is the picture?

Anyway rinse your mouth out with salty water making sure you really swish it round where it hurts the most. Do this every couple of hours.

Clove oil on the area that's hurting you. Thank me later.

Did your wisdom teeth already come through and get removed? Or they've yet to show?

Stem, bud, or leaf?

Just look for clove oil at the pharmacy, or Eugenol USP. Go easy with the stuff because too much'll kill your liver. Just dab a little on your gum and it'll numb it. Relief until you get to the dentist.

Famine's patented solution for wisdom tooth (and area) pain:

* Take your maximum daily allowed dose of paracetamol (acetaminophen, for Colonials).
* Take your maximum daily allowed dose of ibuprofen.
* Yes, you can take both at once safely.
* Do this for three days minimum
* After this point, wean yourself off both - take them half an hour before you think the pain will become irritating and no more frequently than this.
* If it's a week and you're still taking them, you have failed. Go to dentist.

Paracetamol is an analgesic with mild anti-inflammatory properties. This will reduce inflammation slightly and kill the pain. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory with mild analgesic properties. This will reduce the inflammation and slightly kill the pain. Taking both at once reduces both the cause of the pain - inflammation - and the actual pain. Win.

They've shown, but haven't grown in all the way (that sounds worse that it really is) but the bit that has, how should I say, 'sprouted' hasn't caused this problem before.

How would this react to the meds I'm taking to keep myself from having seizures?

Well since I have just had my 4 wisdom teeth removed today I should be the foremost expert here.:sly: My wisdom teeth, which were impacted, would cause pain on and off all of the time. Suffice to say that accidentally poking it in the wrong way would cause it to inflame and become sore for a while as well. Chances are you'll need to get your wisdom teeth x-rayed and checked, they may need to be removed as this could start becoming a regular problem like it did for me.

This, and to prove (via Hollywood) how effective it is skip to 3:30

Co-codamol (codine and paracetamol) is awesome but not sure if you can take ibuprofen with it too, also not sure if it's ok with other meds.

You can still type Paulie so I'd say you're doing pretty well after having all four out :ouch:

Probably won't - though on the upside, if you have a seizure, no more face pain.

Read the instructions for your other drugs first. This will tell you whether you're allowed to take paracetamol or ibuprofen in conjunction with them.

Put a piece of garlic on the "infected" area. Tasted like *beurk* but garlic is an antisepticum.

Also clay (is that right or is it argile) is helping. mix it with water and drink and rince

And honestly go to the dentist.
My brother has also dentistphobia due to bad experience. I had also bad experience with dentists, but check out a couple.
If you don't like the dentist or don't feel confortable at a said dentist, try an other one.
It is important for "newcomers" to feel confortable, otherwise you stress and will feel more pain.

Let me paint the picture ;)
I was at a dentist for years, he was a oldschool guy, already had is pension and did some dentist jobs for friends,... I was there during 5 - 8 years. He was good at his job and fast ( 1 tooth in 15 min without a seringe). But as he didn't reinvested in his equipement i started to go to other dentists.
I came onto a dentist, german, high quality equipement , and i was : that looks good.
Took the nerve out of a tooth and but a fake tooth on an other.
First i was happy, but eventually, i started to have pain on the tooth with the removed nerve. So i returned... xray ...
"oh sir, beneath your tooth is an infectetion,..." (was the last tooth before the wisedom tooth)
I was pissed to say at least. they messed up, and as always with doctors, it's your fault.
So to get rid of the infection, the guy wanted to remove the wisedom tooth to get under the infected tooth.
That he gone on, ... on the other side is also a pocket under a tooth, that need to be removed too.
You will get implents (not breast!!), and we remove all wisedom teeth because if we remove one, let's remove all...

To say at least, i was stunned.
I looked at him, said no way you moneysucker, **** off.
Took me coat and left.

Then i didn't go to a dentist for a year, until my mam said she had a friend who is dentist, so i got there. She only works halftime, very little office, small equipement.
But the teeth she repaired are good and she reconfirmed me that the other dentist wouldn't have to remove 6 teeth. (my wisedom teeth are still good and the infection is no problem as long as the pocket doesn't open)

Conclusion, the less flashy a dentist is the better :D (needs to be clean though :))
And don't believe them everything. They want you money, if you're suspicious, go take a second opinion.

Well, I avoided the dentist after a root canal. then about 5 years later, the tooth kicks back with a huge infection, swelling my jaw so much I looked like David Coulthard.

My advice is to see a GOOD dentist, before you end up having the toothe pulled, and nearly dying from the infection seeping into the bloodstream, forcing you to spend three days in hospital on antibiotics

I wouldnt avoid the dentist, but to keep the area disinfected, a saltwater mouthwash does the trick.

Just dont overdo the salt. I did once. Its a mistake you only make once.

I'm now having a major ulcer in my mouth. I can't eat, drink, talk properly and even wash my face! Last Friday, I couldn't even sleep for the rest of the night and my parent recommend me to rinse my mouth with a glass of salt water and it worked for at least throughout my sleeping time. With the pain, I didn't realise I put in what, 3 teaspoon of salt into the water and my God, I collapse in front of the sink with me throwing out almost the rest of my tongue :ouch:

3tsp. made you puke your brains out? really? goddamn, that has to suck!

Having seen the dentist earlier this afternoon, it turns out that because of my top wisdom tooth growing in, well, weirdly...I was biting down on my cheek. He took a look in my mouth and diagnosed it within seconds. Literally.

So, both the top and bottom tooferz were filed down but it's still swollen (the gum). Should I go back tomorrow and re-emphasize that or just wait to see if it goes down?

And my cheek is somewhat puffed out. :odd:

Did they reccommend removing your wisdom teeth? It's not a very bad procedure at all, I was out of commission for just a day.

Just wondering since most people get them removed around age 18.

Either way, if you've gotten over your fear of the dentist enough to see him once, keep going, at least until the pain subsides. Dental problems can be made much worse by ignoring them sometimes...

yeah. Good you been to the doc.
If you need to get them removed ( they hurt if they grow not parallel to the others or not enough place), do it.
But if they grow normaly and you are a "big mouth" like me, you have a chance that they don't need to be removed. I still got mine and I am 27. Had a hole in was, filled up and no problem at all.

And if you are now going to see a dentist do it regulary (once, twice a year) it will save you a lot of troubles.

A good thumb rule is, keep your real teeth as long as you can and they are not infected

Actually, he told me that it would probably have to be removed at some point, but because they were filed down and I won't be inadvertently gnawing on my cheek anymore, I could go about that at my own leisure. I'm due for another check-up to see what else might be going on...so I'll know what's up from that point onward.

Either way, I'm glad a great deal (practically all) of the pain is gone. :D

Having an excuse to eat ice cream is great. Unless that's not the wisest of ideas and then I'll just stop.

Do keep eating ice cream.

How do they file teeth? Does it hurt or anything? I keep hurting my tongue with one of my teeth, it just feels really sharp, so I was wondering about that as well. I too have not seen the Dentist since I was young, also because of bad memories. But I'm going to need to sooner or later, I just imagine them going crazy with needles, knives and roto-saws, or something crazy like that. Who knows, we'll see. Not that I think I need saws and needles and knives. But maybe they will think they do.

Pardon my ignorance beforehand as I'm unsure what the tools are called.

Ah, okay. It's actually pretty damn quick...it was for me anyway. In any case, the dentist gets the mouth mirror and pokes around to see what the problem(s) could be and goes for the dental drill (if necessary) and starts filing down the tooth to keep it from pricking your tongue any further. It's all very quick and quite painless. In fact, the only possible pain (and it's hardly bothersome) would come from the dentist stretching your mouth in all kinds of directions. There's also this blower that's put into your mouth that either numbs your mouth or dries out excess saliva - I'm unsure of which.

I was expecting needles and all of that as well, but I believe those are only reserved for severe cases where dental surgery is more likely to be the end result.

I see, yeah, I guess you wouldn't just walk in and then they decide you need an emergency dental surgery, when everything was pretty much just fine when you left your house. "Sir, if we don't tear out all your teeth right now, you may never walk again."

I'm sure I'll find out all about it sooner or later.
