Late one night last week, I couldn't sleep, so I turned on the PS2 and decided to race at Le Mans.
I went into the Arcade mode, with the options on a 50 lap race, with a time penalty for contact and mild tire wear (the tire wear in GT4 has to be the most unrealistic aspect). I then went to Le Sarthe I, chose my BMW V12 LMR and set the competition to RSH/RSH and the AI competitiveness at level 6. This gave me a field of two Pescarolos, one Audi, one Bentley and (unfortunately) the Nissan R89C. Almost perfect, except for that one Group C car.
Under the quick tune-up part, I turned the car's HP all the way down to -20% or 623 HP and the weight at 900 kg. This is approximately what the cars have in real life.
Once the race started, I couldn't believe how close to real it was. Since the opposition had 250-300 more horses than I did, passing was very difficult and it was a chore just to stay in their draft on the Mulsanne straight. Lap times were in the 3:30 to 3:31 range, very close to what they turn in real life. Pit stops took place every 10 laps, almost as many laps as the real cars do between stops. I ended up having to pit for fuel before the tires wore out (thanks to the mild tire wear setting).
The 50 laps went by in just under three hours. The racing was entertaining as I had to come from behind several times after screwing up. I had to drive at about 9.5/10 the entire race just to stay with the Nissan. In the end, I was set to pass him after he made his final stop, but on the lap he pitted, I put a wheel off at the Porsche Curves and clouted the wall, so I ended up 2nd, approximately 19 seconds back.
So if any Le Mans freaks like me want a more realistic LM experience, I suggest you give this a try.
Thanks for your time.
