StarLight presents a very rare classic car, the legendary Alpina B6 3.5S from 1988.
Many consider the first-generation BMW M3 to be the best drivers car ever built by BMW. But the M3 was built far more for competition and serious road use than for everyday transportation with it´s raw four-cylinder engine which is not nearly as smooth as a straight-six.

The M3-based Alpina B6 3.5S, which is considered to be one of Alpina´s finest efforts ever, had the best of both worlds with the performance of the powerful and smooth 3.5 liter six-cylinder engine mixed with the handling capabilities of the M3.

That is what I call “the ultimate driving machine”.
Unfortunately only 62 cars were produced between November 1987 and December 1990.

Engine/Gearbox
The engine is exactly the same unit as in the “ordinary” B6 3.5. It is based on BMW´s 3.5 liter six, which produces 218 bhp. Alpina´s version produces 254 bhp. But the two cars don't share the gearbox. Both cars have Getrag 5-speed units but the B6S has a “sport transmission” with the first gear down to the left. Also called a dogleg gearbox.

Suspension/Brakes/Wheels
The B6S shared the chassis with the standard M3 which is considered to have probably the best chassis ever built by BMW. The only difference is that the B6S was equipped with the springs, at the front, from the A/C-equipped M3s. Those are a little bit stiffer to handle the extra-weight. The brakes are the same as in the B6 3.5 but the wheels are 8in wide both at front and rear with 225/45 tires.

Interior/Exterior
In the interior, Alpina made the same changes as in the B6 3.5. They included new seats with blue and green stripes. A new leather-covered steering wheel, gear-knob, new digital instruments and some other minor changes. The only exterior changes were the stripes, optional in gold or silver, and the wheels.

Performance
Alpina claimed a 0-100 km/h time of 6.6 seconds, the same time as the B6 3.5. But in higher speeds the B6S was a little faster thanks to better aerodynamics. It also had a higher top-speed of 251 km/h. That is 3 km/h faster than BMW´s ultimate M3, the M3 Sport Evolution.

B6 3.5S number #021 should go in the questionable modifications thread. Alpina's version of the M3 is almost mythical, and any owner that does that to one oughta have his ass removed.

#028 or #037 seem to be somewhat more original http://www.alpina-archive.com/?p=90&nmt=B6-3.5S-028 and http://www.alpina-archive.com/?p=99&nmt=B6-3.5S-037

Seriously I love Alpina Automobiles, I'd love to click 'Like', but I'm almost too incensed by that ghastly modified white one, to be able to do it!

This, the E24 B7 Turbo and E28 B7 Turbo, E34 B10 Bi-Turbo, E31 B12 5.7, E36 B8 4.6 and E38 B12 6.0, are some of my favourite all time cars.

edit: Also, I don't think it's fair to Alpina to refer to the Engine as a BMW M30B34... The engines were hand built by Alpina using uprated/better components, and given their own designation - which according to Alpina's website was B10/5, it wasn't like they just lifted the engine out of a 635CSi and dropped it in an M3.

Sorry to ask but when you say that the #21 is modified you mean more power or something or because of the color...?

Not the color, the original was white. The car was registered in Germany in 05-10-1988, then it was imported from Germany to the Netherlands in 30-06-2004. The car has since 2004 until today the same owner.
This car has a curb weight of 1368 kg, that is 48 kg more than the Alpina specifications, that could have many reasons. The displacement is the same as the original.

But the suggestion is about the Alpina B6 3.5S and not specific the #21, so it's irrelevant if the car is or not tuned or whatever.

Here is the cars registration information.

Seems to have had a suspension drop, but yes, mostly painting the BMW M tricolor on an Alpina, de-chroming the trademark BMW kidney grille, and the smoked rear lenses, all of which I find pretty objectionable to be honest.

I'm inclined to agree with MatskiMonk, can we have an original spec Alpina B6 3.5S in the OP? That white one's been mulllered with generic mods.

Okay, I got your point and since the thread is not about the #21, I took others photos, hope this one will satisfy your needs?

Anyway thanks for the heads up, very appreciated.

I suppose this Thread is about the Alpina B6 3.5S 1988. Is that car in OP an Alpina B6 3.5S 1988 or not?
Sorry but I see a useless talking here...I can post many suggestions who have 2-3 colors of same car. Who knows if these 2-3 cars are not tuned or something from their owner?
If Starlight post another one photo from a #xx Alpina is here anybody who knows if the owner has installed something extra or not?

I hope you understand my meaning...Not so good in English language.

Oops...Sir StarLight you got me!

EDIT...Here we have a gorgeous Alpina and that's the point!

Thanks, I got your point ... and I agree with you.
I understand also MatskiMonk and so I place a picture of a more original one.
I just picked up #21, because I live in Holland and the car is in Holland too, nothing more nothing less.
