Apr.11 (GMM) A controversy in Germany is brewing over the anthem played on the podium following Fernando Alonso's victory for McLaren-Mercedes in Malaysia.

After German commentators hailed the win as a triumph for the three-pointed star, some viewers were surprised to hear Britain's 'God Save The Queen' mark the occasion for the winning constructor.

McLaren is based in England, but Mercedes-Benz - with a 40 per cent stake in the silver-clad team - is the largest shareholder.

The major German newspaper Bild-Zeitung argues that the national anthem 'Das Lied der Deutschen' - made so famous on the F1 podium by the 91 victories of Michael Schumacher - should be played whenever a McLaren greets the chequered flag first.

On behalf of Germany, Bild said the McLaren MP4-22 is "OUR car!"

"It is difficult to understand," said former German formula one driver Hans-Joachim Stuck.

"The heart of the silver arrows is in Germany," he added, referring to Mercedes motor sport's Stuttgart HQ.

Mercedes' Norbert Haug reacted: "I can understand the feeling of the German fans. But we are an international team and the really important thing is that we win, not what is heard on the podium."

Hmmm. Why not have half of each?

Or a mashup!

McLaren have always played the english anthem. Now that Schumacher is gone, they're pissed? Please...

Sad ba*****s, as MustangSVT said, MS goes and they are pissed at McMerc for doing what they have always done.

So Mercedes has a 40% stake so suddenly they are the company?

Quite frankly most the F1 teams should be playing the British anthem as most are based in the UK anyway.

The constructor of the car is British, therefore the British national anthem gets played. If Mercedes want the German anthem played, then they'll have to buy out McLaren, or hope BMW wins...

Isn't Renault's F1 team based in Britain?

And for that matter, isn't Toyota's F1 team based in Germany?

Yes, but Renault are French, and they are the chassis constructor.

And for that matter, isn't Toyota's F1 team based in Germany?
Yes, but Toyota are Japanese, and they are unlikely to win a Grand Prix.

McLaren is British, also the majority of the car is built here (Woking iirc).

Also is "God save the Queen" British? Because anyone bar the English (In the UK) hate it.

...I hate it lol. I'm still all for Land of Hope and Glory to be our national anthem, screw the queen she's saved enough as it is and no one reallllly cares that much about her.

Anyway, onto the topic, doesn't surprise me really...I guess the Germans were always going to complain as soon as they lost their main source of the German Anthem in the sport. Oh well, they'll get over it...

Mercedes own 40% of McLaren, which (the last time I checked) was less than half. If "other" chooses the British national anthem, then that's just fine.

And you can bet that Bild was calling it a "British heap of junk" last year...

It's a fair point.

"God Save The Queen" is the BRITISH national anthem. It quite annoys me when it's played for ENGLISH teams, when Wales get Land of My Fathers and Scotland gets Flower of Scotland. We need something different (and much less dull). I vote for "Jerusalem".

Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, puh-lease.

I think he's using a Samoan keyboard map.

I'd prefer the Coronation Street theme but, like The Archers, it's tough to sing along to...

They will start to raise questions as to why/if/how Hamilton is british when he wins a race.

I think your keyboard is broken.

You guys used to be cool.

Not as far as I'm aware. In fact, I believe the word is "plague".

So if God Save The Queen is the national anthem of the UK, I personally think the English anthem should be the arrival of the queen of sheba. :)

The theme tune from "The Archers" would be much better.

hahahahaha ... brilliant!

As far as im conserned the name of the team is Mclaren Mercedes... the first name in the whole team name is the one they should play the athem of where they are based and in this case thats the UK.. I think the German fans are just getting upset that they dont here their anthem anymore now that Shumacher is gone!

Besides... who on earth really cares what song is played for manufacturer... its more about the anthem of the driver... am I right in thinking that if Lewis wins they will have to play God Save The Queen Twice??... gosh for some reason I dont think that will go down well!

I also think Jerusalem is better.... one thats less about the queen and more about the people!
