Alternative non-wheel controllers?

Hi Guys,

With the PS1 I used to have a NegCon controller that twisted in the middle for steering and had long throw X/Square buttons that didn't "pop" for smoother steering and better analog gas/brake.

I have an old DFP but I don't get the nice long uninterrupted stretches to play anymore so it and the cockpit stay in the closet most of the time.

I want to know if there's a new DS3 type controller that has a more linear X/Square system? On the standard SONY it'd damn hard to modulate throttle/brake when the button oilcans. Maybe I could modify the buttons' springs so they're less like toggles?

Thanks!

Not sure how good this is but have heard that it works really well...

(on my iPhone so cant post link)

Go to google and search for HKS PS3 Controller.

you have the HKS controller, and you can buy the FPS freeks from KontrolFreek. They have a mod thats names speedfreek also, both work. But imo the FPS freeks give you better control in cargames(only on slower cars tho)

im pretty sure normal people use l2/r2 for brake/throttle and x for handbrake, square for shift down and circle for shift up instead of buying some random ****** ass aftermarket controller.

Left stick for steering, right stick for accel/brake, L2 for down shift, R2 for up, R1 for handbrake, L1 for tune controls.

I play using original gt controls and do with most racing games. ,

X accelerate
[_] brake
L2 + r2 gears up + down
Directional buttons for steering

Hmm... The HKS one looks interesting, but the reason why I don't use the right analog is that I prefer to brake while on the gas sometimes. I don't know if I can do that with the HKS but maybe? I also don't think I can remap my old brain to use the L/R buttons to gas/brake but I used to when I was an autotranny guy.

Thanks for the ideas - keep 'em coming.

BTW, I looked again at the HKS and it looks like the brake/gas controls are actually pivoted push in buttons like real floor hinge pedals? This may work to push gas and roll the thumb over to brake.

I'd LOVE to give one a test drive or find a good review.

Here's some hands on reviews.... everything from "great" to "rubbish" as usual:

XBox pads are quite good as they have more trigger-travel and many users find the pad more ergonomic for long playing periods.

You need a decent converter though because some give you too much deadzone on the sticks.

If you can get used to the triggers for gas and brake, the "kicker" addons for the triggers make a HUGE improvement.

when i was using the DS3 on GT, i used R2 for accel and L2 for brake. then i configured the right joystick to shift up when i pulled back on it and shift down when i pushed up on it (just like my real Mazda 6 autostick).

i know that's not what you were asking, but that was just me giving a suggestion for using the triggers and sticks for driving/shifting.

The HKS is GREAT for the price. Definitely a step up from the DS3. I've been using mine since December and there is absolutely no question that I am faster with it than with my DS3......not WAY faster, but faster none the less.

Map the L2 and R2 to brake an throttle and then switch the controller into NFS mode (switch on the back). This turns the digital gas and brake levers on the right into ANALOG gas and brake......a HUGE improvement.

This also makes it much easier to apply the brakes (actually using the L2) while keeping the gas on.

Fanatec makes an "alternative" controller. I've never used it or even seen it in person. Check out their website though, it looks like a three piece ds3 controller that hinges in the middle.
