Hey guys,

As much as I love my GamePOD, im looking at a custom aluminium profile build.

Using a G27 and my main question is what size profile to use as the price starts going up alot depending on size. I want the frame to be solid.

Initially I was going to use 40x40 but I have seen a wheel stand using 10x10. Could I use 20x20 and have a sturdy rig? By using 20 rather than 40 saves alot of cash than can be put towards a new seat.

Looking at inverted pedals, shelf for surround sound and incorporating a mount at the front for a 32 inch flat tv. I have a design in progress in sketchup but wanted some more info on profile before I get any further.

I have read the thread a little further down about a new profile rig and Il be keeping a close eye on it.

Will use this site for purchase unless anyone else has a reccomended supplier:

Hey mate. I think you will get a much stiffer build with 40 series profiles to be honest. Have a look at Motedis.co.uk Their prices are excellent and they supply 40x40 and 45x45 at the same price. Good luck with your build.

Most of the cost with using aluminum profile for a rig is the fasteners and/or machining.
The tubing itself is relatively cheap.

I agree that you are much better off with at least 40x40, if not 45x45.
I used varying sizes on my rig, but I went even larger than 45x45 on a few sections.

I've used 20mm profile (Flexlink XBDM or XDBM, I can never remember which) for mine and it's not all that sturdy to be honest. It's not flimsy either, though, and I think once I have it on a base it'll improve a great deal, but I think I could have simplified the frame a lot had I gone for 40x20 or something similar.

But yeah, as Jogo says, the extrusion itself is the cheap bit. 1 metre of Flexlink XDBM is £6.20, one bag of 10 slot nuts is £11 and one 90 degree angle bracket is £3.60! Fortunately it was relatively easy to drill holes in the profile for M5 bolts to join it all together, but I still had to use a lot of brackets and nuts anyway.

Thanks for the replies again guys.

Ive done a sketch up of the basic frame and compared costs of just the profile;
Motedis Prices:
40x40 £120
30x30 £78

Thanks for the link to motedis, its a hell of a lot cheaper than the site I was going to use.

Id like the 40x40 but cant ignore the price difference as what id save would buy alot of fasteners/brackets etc.

Here is a basic sketch of the main frame, yet to add monitor bracket/seat bracket and a few other bits:

Left hand side is the rear and vertical posts in corners will be to mount rear surround speakers. Need to add 2 vertical lengths of profile at the front to mount monitor. Size wise, the frame is 1500 x 800mm

Now you can see the basic design, does it affect opinion on what size profile I use due to how it is constructed?

Any input from people about modifications or from experience would be appreciated. I will fill the sections with black plastic panels, similar to what this guy did with his evo cockpit;
