Am I drifting yet?

So lately, I've been toying around a bit with drifting again, and decided to try my hand at FF drifting, since I've always felt that FF cars are so much more stable and easier to control.

After a few practice laps on Trial Mountain, I managed to create this video . EDIT: A cockpit view with the gauges can be downloaded fromhttp://www.sohcahtoa.net/videos/IntegraDrifting-Cockpit.avi

My biggest problem is if I hold the handbrake too long, my drifting angle takes a sudden spin to nearly 90 degrees and a near spin out. If I don't hold it long enough, then the car straightens out suddenly and I find myself understeering directly into the outside wall.

However, I did manage to pull off a couple drifts that just look BEAUTIFUL, IMO. :sly:

Tell me what you think.

Hey good job. On most turns the car did straighten out faster then what I was expecting. I didn't see as much e-break usage as I thought there would be. next time when you make a clip/video of your drifting can you leave the gauges on so I/we can see how much e-break is being used, and stuff like that

Other then that nice drifting with the FF. Personally I don't know how you can drift with a FF, well just not me. I don't like to drag the car.

Well keep up the good work. 👍

hm.. nice work over there! personally i'm not a big fan of FF drifting niether..

otherwise.. you need to work on countersteering....

How do I get the guage showing e-brake usage while still getting an outside view? The only guage I get is a spedometer, current gear, the over-rev light, and the display showing the recommended gear for the next turn. The only way I know to get the E-Brake light is to go first person.

I started messing around with FF drifting by simply figuring out how it would work. I noticed that if you hold just the e-brake and kept the wheel centered and you don't hit either the gas or brake, eventually the car will start travelling in a straight line backwards. So I figured that if you lock a tire, that tire will want to lead the way.

So then you take your car and turn it sideways as you enter the turn. While holding the e-brake, your back end will want to go ahead of the front. By countersteering and applying throttle, the front end will try to stay ahead of the back. By giving the right amount of throttle, the front will try to stay ahead, but not as much as the rear, causing the car to turn while staying sideways.

However, for this to work, it is very important that the front wheels DO NOT SPIN. If they do, then they won't be pulling the front end hard enough and you'll spin out. For this reason, I was using a TCS setting of 10 for that video.

It also helps if you use Super-Soft T8 tires in the front for extra control, but use Sims or Normals in the back to make it easier to get the back end out. It also makes the car less likely to jerk and understeer if you release the e-brake too soon.

ASM doesn't seem to affect FF drifting, since the ASM system shuts off when you pull the e-brake.

Remember that "drifting"/"sliding" a FF car is alot different from a FR car. What I tend to do is feint a little, then when the weight is shifted, pull the e-brake and get a HUGE angle so that if the car pulls itself out, the road will have straightened out already. Don't use the TCS, it might not feel comfortable, but you have to learn how to control the car. "Don't mix tyres/tires.... Not under ANY circumstances..." And finally, You can only get those types of tachos in first person. The devs thought that if the first person tachos were in the third person, they'd be too intruding.

I don't see why I shouldn't use TCS...I mean, I need to make sure that the driving wheels don't spin while applying as much power as possible, and that's what TCS is for, right? I can see the purpose in learning proper throttle control, but for now I'll work on proper countersteering and allowing the game to deal with throttle.

And what's wrong with mixing tires? I need the back wheels to have as little grip as possible, but the fronts need to have as little slip as possible. Only way to achieve that is with mixed tires.

BTW, I've uploaded a video of a cockpit view of my drifting so you can see the e-brake usage. It can be seen at http://www.sohcahtoa.net/videos/IntegraDrifting-Cockpit.avi .
