Analog stick vs. control pad

I'm a complete newbie to GT3 and want to start picking it up. I'm trying to decide between using the control pad vs. analog stick. What are the pros and cons of each, and which do most people prefer? Also, I'm specifically playing GT3 to learn how to drift, since I'm not a fan of grip racing. Would that change my preference of analog vs. pad? Oh, steering wheels are out of the question. Thanks ahead of time for any replies.

Analog all the way man, it's just so much more precise than the pad. It's a lot easier to ease into turns and give the wheel a little bit of a turn to the left or right. If you're trying to drift then precise control is really important. Analog is the next best thing to the wheel I think.

I'll heartily second Cvcpower's comment. It seems the only people who prefer the D-pad are those that started with GT1 or GT2, and have years of habit with it.

I originally started with analog steering and buttons for throttle/brake, but after a couple sessions I switched to both analog sticks, and never looked back. The control is much finer.

Good luck and welcome to GTP!

Yes, definitely use the Analog stick. I'm saying this even though I use the pad, which I regret... It's too late for me to change it now though, since I'm close to 100% completion. *sniff*

You gotta go analog. I use the buttons for throttle and brake, though, I tried dual sticks, but i'm too used to the buttons.

I play w/the D-pad. It just seems to have more effect for me and I can't reach the Analog stick to steer and have a comfortable grip on the controller.

I actually use the Logitech wheel, but I remember seeing an interview with the creator of GT3, where he recommended people use the D-Pad rather than the analogue sticks, because of the 'imprecision' of the sticks.

Im an analog stick man and use the buttons for gas and brake.
The feel of the steering is better with the analog.

Welcome to GT Planet Snow Storm :snowflake

Anologue here, but D Pad for Rally and Test Course/Super Speedway :gcar:

Anyone else find Rally better with D-Pad? :D

I am a D-pad all the way. I don't use the analog sticks unless I really have to in other games. I think this comes from the fact that I always played with the D-pad and never tried the analog sticks.

And maybe it's beacuse I spent all my really good gaming days(except now with GT3) playing NES and SNES...so it's a kind of sentimental relationship between me and the D-pads...

I think there is a slight... misunderstanding here. Snowstorm27, did you mean using one analog stick for steering and the buttons for gas and brake vs. using the D-pad to steer and the buttons for gas and brake? Or did you mean using the left analog stick for steering and the right one for gas and brake vs. one of the above methods?

analog all the way man...works so much better for entering and leaving turns :) better response times with them as well!

i like the d-pad, but then i've always used it ever since the days of the original nes, i can't use the analog it just doesn't feel right

Analog all the way, and bythe way learn with the manual, I did not nd it was a pain to learn to switch. again you get more control with manual.

Analog is definetely better for racing games like GT. I got my first Dual Shock pad the same time I bought GT1 in '98, and I've never gone back to the digital pad.

I used to use the D-pad when i started out, but now I use the analog stick. I tjust seems better now that I am into the game more.
