Got tired of driving hunched over the coffee table so picked up a G27 and a racing bucket from Kijiji and some cardboard boxes from the grocery store:

Okay, maybe need something a little more solid.

Pedals reversed (got that here, worked out really well, thanks!).
Pedal assembly has about 12" slide range with locking screw knobs underneath; pedal assembly can fold up vertical for storage.
Steering wheel slider and pivot mount also visible here:

Shifter mount, also has slider with locking screw.

Driver view looking down (normally I look ahead at GT5 on the 52" LCD)

And the whole thing. Not visible but there are a pair of Aura bass shakers under the seat.

Very nice mate, if i may ask, did you weld or the bracket comes like that, what tubing did you use. Which size?

Very awesome and solid rig, almost nixim looking.

Agreed! The red finish and square tubing had me thinking the same there for a sec.

Really like the way you did the pedal inversion too!

Very nice execution, and very clean!

👍 👍

Thanks, appreciate the compliments.

Much of it started life as a stair stepper that someone had kindly left by the side of the road. The rectangle tubing is roughly 1.5"x3.5" fairly thin wall, maybe 0.095" or slightly less - I did measure when I was setting up for the welds but I don't remember exactly. The rest (like the pedal frame) was 1" and 1-1/8" square tubing I stole from another project I have on the go, I think 1/8" wall - way overkill for this job and heavy but it was handy and various bits of angle, round tubing and flat that I had lying around.

I did all the fabrication and welding (MIG) except for a couple of chance bits from the exercise machine that happened to fit - the main "I" shaped base was the original base from the exercise machine.

I was quite pleased with how it turned out, there's only a couple of minor changes I would make if I did it over:
-lighter weight tubing in pedal assembly
-slight reduction in pedal mount angle
-shorter slider for the steering wheel mount
-lower cross member for the steering wheel about 1", I was originally going to make it adjustable height too but wasn't sure it would be solid enough
- and in hindsight I should have put the tilt for the steering wheel right on the cross member instead of at the end of the slider to better fold up for storage but it works okay

I went with red and black partly to match the seat and partly because it was what I had on hand (I also had some white but the original frame from the stepper was white and it just didn't look right.)

Contrary to my normal highly thought out design process the only real planning I did was the photo with the cardboard boxes to get the basic locations. Everything else I pretty much figured out on the fly.

I am going add a proper handbrake at some point - got to see what I can find at the wreckers when spring comes. And I do like the idea of a load cell brake mod - I've been going through some of the license levels in GT5 and I find braking well is the hardest part.

Very nice rig. Looks to be very solid and stable which I consider to be the most important features of a good racing cockpit. And it looks good too which is a real nice bonus. I think it is awesome that you were able to salvage and recycle the metal instead of buying all new material. Do you know what the total cost was? I'm sure you had to supply some of the hardware or did you find that laying around also?

Thanks Troysloth, it is rock solid. I have a mechanical engineer friend 6'7" and about 270lbs who does real auto-cross and track for a hobby and even he is impressed with the experience.

At a guess if I had to buy all the bits:
seat $100 (only thing I bought specifically for this project)
steel $100 (mostly salvaged, maybe $30 in new steel from my other project)
hardware $30 (mix of salvage and things I had so maybe $10 bought for this)
casters $50, surplus store, on sale (yes, I'm a packrat)
bass shakers $40 (maybe, I got them years ago at a surplus store)
amp $30 (old car amplifier and PC power supply from my junk bin)
wire and connector to extend the pedal harness $10 (from my junk bin)
paint $15 (I had it but did replace what I used)
gas and wire for welder $10 (mostly the shielding gas)

driving Nurnberg... Priceless
